FORT WORTH, Texas — Kyle Larson rode off with another victory Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway, leaving a handful of NASCAR Xfinity Series drivers lamenting what could have been.

Taylor Gray emerged from double overtime in the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 with a career-best second-place finish in the No. 54 Toyota.

“It shouldn’t be, right? It shouldn’t be a career best,” Gray said. “It’s nice to finish second; obviously I want to win. I’m more so happy that my team and I were able to recover from my mistakes earlier in the day and able to bring home a strong run and a strong finish for our two weeks off.”

Gray’s previous best was third place last year at Richmond while running a part-time schedule for Joe Gibbs Racing. Promoted to full time, Gray finished fifth this season at Daytona and Rockingham.

“I can’t thank all my Joe Gibbs Racing guys enough for bringing me a really fast Operation 300 GR Supra,” Gray said. “I tried to ruin our day a few times for us, just with dumb mistakes toward the beginning and middle of the race. But it just kind of shows how strong this 54 group is, being able to fight back and get a good finish.”

Sam Mayer, the 2024 winner in Fort Worth, lined up in front of Gray in the inside lane for the final restart. Mayer had taken the lead on the final restart in regulation with seven laps remaining and again during the first overtime attempt. He was unable to get the No. 41 Ford clear of the field one more time.

“I just had no help,” Mayer said. “[Larson] — I beat him. I straight up outclassed him right there, and he just had a push. … He got to my quarter, was able to side draft on [Turn 1] entry and it was over from there. I did everything right. I learned my lessons from Homestead — how to restart and do the job right. I did it better than anyone on the front row, but it just didn’t go my way and that’s just part of racing.

“I was able to gap [Gray], and on restarts you want them on your bumper. I’ll have to look at it. I probably need to be a little better on my timing to help the 54, but I did everything I could to beat [Larson]. I knew he was going to be able to roll the top.”

Larson, who will start fourth Sunday in the Cup Series race at TMS, picked up his 17th Xfinity win. He’s won twice this season in three starts and also won in Fort Worth in the fall of 2016.

Championship leader Justin Allgaier won the first stage Saturday and finished second in Stage 2. He was battling Larson for the lead in Stage 3 before crashing the No. 7 Chevrolet.

“It’s hard to be sitting here and not still out on the racetrack,” Allgaier said. “Kyle can go fast in anything he drives, and he’s done a great job.

“Probably the most disappointing part about the day is it’s my mom’s birthday. I would love to get a trophy and celebrate her birthday with that, and instead I’m standing here.”

SAN JOSE, Calif. & INDIANAPOLIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 23, 2025–

Lyten, the supermaterial applications company and innovator of 3D Graphene, today announced the launch of Lyten Motorsports, a new venture designed to bring Lyten’s material science innovations to motorsports parts. Lyten Motorsports is launching in partnership with INDYCAR Experience, bringing its 25-year experience as a supplier to motorsports circuits around the world.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250523498662/en/

IndyCar Experience car sponsored by Lyten

Lyten’s 3D Graphene is a foundational, carbon-based material that can be tuned to meet the specific needs of high-performance applications, impacting material properties like strength, weight, conductivity, and permeability. Lyten is already utilizing its 3D Graphene platform to build lithium-sulfur batteries approaching 2X the energy density of lithium-ion while eliminating 85% of the mined minerals, including elimination of nickel, cobalt, and graphite. Lyten is using the strength, weight, and conductivity of its materials to design and build parts that further push the limit of strength to weight ratio in motorsports.

“Material science is creating a future that is lighter, stronger and safer, while reducing our impact on the planet,” said Dan Cook, Lyten Co-Founder and CEO. “Motorsports sit at the apex of materials innovation, where small improvements make the difference in speed and safety. The introduction of carbon fiber revolutionized the sport, and we believe Lyten 3D Graphene can be the next materials revolution in motorsports.”

Lyten will continue to execute materials research and development at its Headquarters in Silicon Valley and has opened a design and manufacturing facility in Indianapolis, Indiana for motorsport parts, co-located with the INDYCAR Experience headquarters. Lyten Motorsports is currently manufacturing 3D printed parts utilizing Lyten’s proprietary filaments and adhesives and quickly expanding into autoclave manufacturing to meet market demands. Lyten will be further enhancing the performance of carbon fiber parts and identifying metal parts that can now be converted into lighter, lower cost composite parts. Lyten Motorsports plans to develop parts for a broad range of US and International racing series.

Lyten has been testing new material designs on the INDYCAR Experience 2-seat INDYCAR for more than 2 years and will continue to use the platform to accelerate part development. The Lyten sponsored INDYCAR Experience 2-seater will be active throughout this year’s racing season, including this year’s Indy 500.

“Motorsports is a high-growth, technology enabled industry and challenge #1 is pushing the bounds of known materials. There is tremendous demand for that next materials innovation and Lyten has it with its 3D Graphene platform,” said Scott Jasek, CEO of INDYCAR Experience. “I am excited to use our base in Indianapolis to scale up U.S. manufacturing of motorsport parts and bring with it technology focused jobs.”

Lyten is a privately held company with >$425M in equity investment, including investment from Stellantis, FedEx, Honeywell, Nokia, Prime Movers Lab, the European Investment Fund, and Luxembourg Future Fund. Its products include lithium-sulfur batteries, composites, concrete, and sensors, all built on Lyten’s 3D Graphene supermaterials platform.

The 66th running of the Coca-Cola 600 will feature 40 drivers, and four of them will be celebrating special milestones when they take the green flag on Sunday.

The biggest milestone belongs to seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson. After driving the IndyCar two-seater with NFL legend Tom Brady as part of the parade laps at the Indianapolis 500, he will then head to Charlotte to take part in the Coke 600.

And when Johnson climbs into the No. 84 Legacy Motor Club Toyota that he co-owns, it will be his 700th career NASCAR Cup Series start. Johnson made his Cup debut in 2001 and on Sunday, he will become just the 21st driver to ever reach 700 career starts. He is also a four-time winner of the Coca-Cola 600 (only Darrell Waltrip has more) and has been running a partial schedule this season. Looking at active drivers, the only Cup driver to also reach 700 starts is Kyle Busch, who currently sits at 726.

Next weekend, Denny Hamlin will be the 22nd driver to reach this milestone after Johnson, as Hamlin makes his 699th start in the Coke 600.

Johnson has also pushed back on rumors that claim this weekend will be his final start in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Daniel Suarez, who is the only foreign-born driver to win a NASCAR championship at the national level (Xfinity 2016), will be making his 300th career start on Sunday. The Trackhouse Racing Team driver has two Cup wins but none yet this year, having finished as high as second at Las Vegas.

Ryan Preece, who drives the No. 60 RFK Racing Ford, will be making his 200th career start on Sunday. Preece is having the strongest season of his career right now as he hunts his first career win. He finished second at Talladega in a photo finish, but was later disqualified when the car failed post-race inspection.

And then there’s Ty Gibbs, the grandson of Joe Gibbs. Driving the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, he will be competing in his 100th career Cup race. Like Preece, Gibbs has never won in the Cup Series, finishing as high as second at Darlington last year. He is also the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion, also winning at the Charlotte oval during that season.

On the Cusp … Jake Bollman is on the cusp of victory lane entering his first ARCA Menards Series West (AMSW) start at Colorado National Speedway (CNS) on Saturday night. The Californian came within two laps of notching his first-career victory last month at Tucson Speedway after he led 15 laps late in the event. Despite the close brush with victory, Bollman recorded a career-best third-place finish in his sixth career AMSW start. The 18-year-old will take the green flag for the first time in the AMSW at CNS on Saturday night but has previously competed at the 0.375-mile bullring in legends car competition.

Centennial Celebration … Bollman has an opportunity to capture a milestone achievement in the Centennial State on Saturday night. His No. 19 NAPA Auto Care Chevrolet SS is featuring the custom gold paint scheme, marking the 100th anniversary of the NAPA brand, similar to the paint scheme that fellow NAPA drivers Daniel Hemric, Chase Elliott, Brad Sweet, and Ron Capps have showcased this spring. Bollman has the chance to be the first to pull into victory lane with the gold 100th anniversary design and could also capture the 100th AMSW points-paying win for Bill McAnally Racing (BMR).

BMR in the Rockies …  CNS is hosting Bollman and the AMSW for the first time in four years as the teenager is seeking the ninth win for BMR in Colorado.  Jesse Love was the most recent BMR driver to take the checkered flag at CNS in 2020. Eric Holmes, Paulie Harraka, Chris Eggleston, and Hailee Deegan have also been victorious at CNS in BMR entries since 2008. Dating back to Eggleston’s first of three victories in 2014, BMR has won five of the last eight AMSW events at Colorado.

Tune In … Coverage of the tour’s first event at CNS since 2021 will be available on FloRacing at 10:00 p.m. ET (www.floracing.com). Stay connected with the No. 19 NAPA Auto Care team by following @BMR_NASCAR on Twitter, @bmrnascar on Instagram, and Bill McAnally Racing on Facebook.

Jake Bollman Quote:

On making his first start at CNS:

“I feel great about this weekend, especially after coming so close at Tucson a few weeks ago. That was only our second race together, and I think we’ve put together a great foundation for the rest of the season. (Crew chief) Cayden (Lapcevich) and I are enjoying working together and I think we should be one of the cars to beat on Saturday. I’ve only raced here in a legends car, so having a longer practice will be a big benefit to us to get our NAPA Chevrolet dialed in. It’s super cool to be able to drive this gold paint scheme. It’d be great if we could put it in victory lane and celebrate NAPA’s 100th anniversary in style this weekend.”

Two-time NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn’t pull any punches on the latest episode of his “Dale Jr. Download” podcast.

Earnhardt’s passion for the Xfinity Series isn’t just due to his past, he obviously has a clear rooting interest due to his work with JR Motorsports. That being said, he’s not afraid to be honest about NASCAR’s second-tier circuit.

Just a week ago, Earnhardt admit that he’s worried about Xfinity’s future due to NASCAR’s focus on the Cup Series Next Gen car.

“I believe that the parts and pieces that we’re all using to race Trucks or Xfinity are a bit obsolete and I wish they weren’t. I wish there were companies still out there making these parts,” Earnhardt said, via On3. “When the Cup car moved away from the rear-end housing and suspension — all these type things that we currently run — it’s put things in question in terms of physically, what’s the future of the Xfinity car.”

One potential way Xfinity can improve its product is by changing up its schedule. During this week’s “Dale Jr. Download” episode, he made it clear that he wants to see more races at North Wilkesboro Speedway.

“There’s been a lot of conversation about the Xfinity Series racing at North Wilkesboro. There’s not much to that,” Earnhardt said. “If they put a race there, I’ll run it. I said that years ago, I said that when Wilkesboro came back. I said it every year. That’s not a new bit of information.”

Earnhardt then made it clear that he’s fed up with Xfinity races at Martinsville Speedway.

“I’d rather have an Xfinity race there than Martinsville. That [expletive] we’re doing at Martinsville is for the birds. I don’t love taking my cars over there and watching them get destroyed and watching our drivers destroy each other. So I’d love them to not go to Martinsville and go to Wilkesboro. That’d be better.”

Ouch.

Martinsville Speedway has been around since 1947. There have been Xfinity races there for the past five years.

Do you agree with Dale Jr.’s stance on Martinsville?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — While NASCAR’s drivers will try and put on a show on Sunday night at the Coca-Cola 600, the pre-race show is always something to remember.

And it serves to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

A host of military appreciation activities and performances will precede the races, which as always takes place on Memorial Day Weekend.

A military appreciation spectacular.

That will include the appearance of hundreds of servicemembers, patriotic music, helicopters and a 105 mm howitzer demonstration.

George Lutz, who’s son George Anthony Lutz was killed in Iraq in 2005, it’s a place that he visits every year.

“We know that NASCAR has some of the greatest patriotic fans in America. They understand sacrifice, and understand patriotism.”

Following the loss of his son, Lutz founded national nonprofit “Honor and Remember,” which tries to recognize the sacrifice of America’s fallen service members and their families through support and unique experiences for Gold Star families.

“Charlotte Motor Speedway have realized that together we can send the same message of thanks,” Lutz said. “Not just in memory of those who gave their lives, but to their families and those that are still here with us grieving.”

Lutz recently wrote a book about his experience, titled “Tragedy to Tribute: One Father’s Grief Fuels a Passionate Journey to Change the Mindset of a Nation.

600 Miles of Remembrance

Like every year, each of the 40 cars in the field will display the name of a fallen servicemember on its windshield. And at the 200-mile mark, the race pauses for a moment of silence to honor the fallen and their families.

On Alex Bowman’s No. 48 car will be the name Mike Kempel.

Kempel was killed in action in Vietnam in 1970, while attempting to save the lives of his fellow Marines.

He was awarded a Silver Star.
