GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) — TCU’s Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno came from behind to win the final match on Sunday as the second-seeded Horned Frogs wrapped up their first NCAA women’s beach volleyball championship with a 3-2 victory over No. 4 seed Loyola Marymount.

TCU (32-5) is the first school other than USC and UCLA to win the title. The Trojans won the first two and the previous four, while the Bruins won two straight in 2018-19.

Alvarez and Moreno, who took a year off to play in the Olympics, returned to finish unbeaten in four years as a duo. Alvarez and Moreno dropped the first game 18-21 to LMU’s Michelle Shaffer and Anna Pelloia before rallying to win the final two 21-15 and 15-6.

The Lions (38-7) eliminated No. 5 seed USC in the quarterfinals and top-seed UCLA in the semifinals.

TCU threes pair Sofia Izuzquizal and Allanis Navas earned a point with a 21-16, 21-13 sweep.

Fours pair Anhelina Khmil and Ana Vergara also swept their way to a point with 21-14 and 21-19 wins. The duo finished 21-0 this season.

The Olympians finished off the championship as the Horned Frogs won 12 straight to end the season.

LMU twos pair Chloe Hooker and Vilhelmiina Prihti earned a point with a 21-16, 21-17 sweep. Fives pair Tanon Rosenthal and Giuliana Poletti Corrales had the other point with a pair of 21-16 wins.

TCU had no answer for USC as they lost their first game of the regional 13-1.

This is a start that Tommy LaPour wanted to forget. He went three innings while allowing three runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He also hit two batters.

USC got on the board first in the second inning with an RBI single from catcher Richard Tejeda, who brought second baseman Abbrie Covarrubias in. This made the score 1-0.

The Trojans would add on in the fourth inning, making the score 3-0. Right fielder Jack Basseer hit a RBI single, bringing Covarrubias home. Which was followed up by a fielder’s choice from third baseman Ethan Hedges.

TCU would finally get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run from designated hitter Sawyer Strosnider. He pulled the call and deposited it into right field. This made the TCU’s deficit 4-1, the closest TCU would get.

USC would pile on in the sixth inning. Shortstop Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek would single with the bases loaded and bring Tejeda in. First baseman Adrian Lopez would continue the scoring as he would single and bring center fielder Brayden Dowd in.

Covarrubias would cap off the inning with a sacrifice fly to bring in Hedges and give USC a 6-1 lead.

The game would not improve for TCU as USC tacked on a pair of three-run innings in the seventh and ninth innings. The Horned Frogs pitchers shot themselves in the foot in those innings as they walked five batters, hit two and had a throwing error.

The Frogs must improve to extend its run in the 2025 NCAA baseball tournament. TCU will be in the loser’s bracket of the regional, so TCU will have to win out to win the regional. TCU will play Oregon State Saturday at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  – La Salle University women’s track and field athlete Gwenno Goode advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday during the final day of the NCAA East Preliminaries at Hodges Stadium.

Goode becomes the first La Salle female to make it to Nationals since 2023 when El Mancini qualified in the 10,000-meter run. She is the second runner in program history to advance in the steeplechase, after Grace Mancini did it in 2021.

The Barry, Wales native placed fourth in her steeplechase heat and was 11th out of 48 overall with a time of 10:01.65, becoming one of the 12 individuals to qualify for Nationals. It was the second time she ran in the event at the NCAA East Preliminaries, finishing 28th last year with a time of 10:32.75.

Goode’s race marks another achievement for her collegiate racing career at La Salle. Last fall, Goode qualified for the NCAA Cross Country National Championships, after earning All-Region honors at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. She also won the individual title at the Atlantic 10 Cross Championships in the fall of 2024. In the indoor track & field season, she took gold medals at the conference championships in both the 3,000-meter run and the distance medley relay.

Now, the distance runner will turn her attention to the NCAA National Championships, which will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. from June 11-14.
