Greenville deputies arrested a teen after he was found with a loaded firearm.

According to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office’s Deputy Jeremy Holt, the 15-year-old was arrested at a Carolina High School basketball game Thursday.

Holt said officers initially approached the student after they smelled marijuana coming from him. The teen told deputies while they searched him that he had a gun

The student was charged with possession of a firearm on school property and unlawful possession by someone under 18. He was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.  The student will also be recommended for expulsion.

The motive behind bringing the gun into the gym and where he got it was still being investigated, Holt said. The gun type was not clear.

Jeremy Carrick, principal of Carolina High School, sent a message to parents after the news of the arrest.

“As a result of an investigation being conducted by the school administration and law enforcement, deputies discovered a student in possession of a firearm at the basketball game tonight. At this point, there is no evidence that any threats were made toward the school or others,” Carrick said. “As a reassuring measure, the EVOLV weapons detection system and additional law enforcement will be on campus tomorrow. We are having school on the planned half-day schedule. Please remind your child the single most effective preventative tool regarding school safety is the “See Something, Say Something” protocol.”
