Welcome to my Sunday, SkiSoutheast, FirsTrax Ramble. I’m not sure why I dedicated Sundays to rambling in the last season or so, because in truth, I’ve always sat down at my keyboard with the intent to simply have a casual ‘conversation’ with you, our readers…in a way that hopefully satisfies your appetite for all things winter. So really this is more likely my SkiSoutheast Ramble Version CDLXIV. (I will save you the time from having to Google that – but it would be version 464th or so…since we’ve been at this SkiNC / SkiSoutheast thing for 464 weeks now plus or minus some preseason and post season posts.

Regardless, welcome.

Thanks for Your Support…

I’ve been noticing a steady trickle of purchases on our SkiSoutheast Online Store. Thanks for that. We keep the prices down on our stuff, because we love seeing you guys out on the slopes representin’

The beanies are always popular as I wore one to the Christmas Parade last night and had a couple of people come up to me asking where I got it and “wanting one”. We usually give away tons at Summits, etc…but they are always available online and not too expensive (I hope 😉

I recently mislocated by favorite blue golf hat from Sea Trails, so yesterday it hit me that I should queue up a blue SkiSoutheast.com ball cap and as you can see to the right – those are NOW available. I ordered a few different styles to test before we do the SkiSoutheast / Snowshoe Summit February 28-March 1st and I should be getting those this week.

Festive Saturday Evening

The Town of Boone held its Christmas Parade on a cold, 35° Saturday evening – last evening.

SkiSoutheast.com brings you the entire 2024 Boone NC Christmas parade that took about an hour to see, and we cut out all of the long breaks between floats – AND we cut out tons of firetrucks, septic tank trucks (you read that correctly) and we have it down to 9 minutes! Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

I really don’t think I have ever been at a Christmas Parade with so many trucks and trailers promoting advertising for builders, attorneys, and businesses like I saw last night. Then again, like I just shared, I cut those out of the video and got it down to NINE MINUTES, so I am not sure anyone would be interested in a nine-minute-parade. So there you go.

Canaan Valley Resort Does it Right!

I know some would love it if Canaan Valley Resort opened a week or so earlier every winter, but take it from me, these guys make EVERY DAY, even days off of the slopes, wonderful. You’ll find Santa and even the Grinch roaming around the Hickory Dining Room this time of year. Ice skating is open and skiing & snowboarding opens Saturday! Man that plate of eggs, pancakes and sausage is calling my name!

Davis, WV is such a wonderful place, with its own slower pace and vibe. If you haven’t been, you have to check it out.

Silver Creek at Snowshoe Opens Thursday, December 19th!

Silver Creek returns for the season this coming Thursday, December 19th. From wide-open midday cruisers to chasing turns under the lights, it’s no surprise that “The Creek” is a local favorite! Who’s counting down the days?

On Saturday, I posted a Video Tour of the ski mountains and I mentioned that I MIGHT share the natural snowfall totals on this morning’s FirsTrax. I have to be more careful of what I say, because I received several emails asking for that. Bear in mind, guys and gals, that you can take one sneak peak at the Snow Reports page and see that information anytime you want it.

Since I am going through the trouble of compiling and reporting on natural snowfall to date, I DO want to brag and tell you guys that SkiSoutheast.com is THE ONLY place where you can get that accurate data anytime. No other reporting service and none of the individual ski resorts keep this data throughout the season and annually like we do.

So let’s get to it.

A couple of interesting observations:

As snowy as it has been in West Virginia, this year’s 45″ so far around Canaan & Timberline pretty much MATCHES last year’s November and December totals. SNOWSHOE, on the other hand is way ahead of last year’s snowfall. Bear in mind that JANUARY is typically the snowiest month as over 60″ of snow fell in WV last January. Snowfall totals for Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee are off a bit right now.

Meh Weather Today? This Week?

Check the SNOW REPORT for the details, because there are more slopes and trails open for your Sunday adventures. You MIGHT want to have a look at the SKI CAMS as well…as most look a bit wet, to socked in with heavy clouds/moisture and just down right “meh”…although there ARE also some reports of light snow flurries falling early as temperatures haven’t quite reached above 30° in some locations.

Check Out ALL of the Ski Cams –  Check ’em out and if you DO venture out, wear the proper gear.

I can start today’s weather share by stating that every mountain is under a:

*WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY*

We’ve got a mixed bag of precipitation in the forecast today. It might be a good day to try out your new waterproof layers.

If you don’t have any…hit up a ski shop…

The colder climbs of Snowshoe Mountain, Canaan Valley and Timberline Mountain COULD see some light flurries, light rain, to light freezing rain most of the day. As of 8am it was nearly all rain…slightly underdeveloped snow. The NWS IS forecasting 1-3″ of snow and sleet for the West Virginia resorts today. That would make for some sweet Sunday turns!

Monday through Wednesday is looking a bit milder and damp with showers, before (wait for it) changing back to snow with highs and lows in the 20s and teens.

So we’ve got THAT going for us…

Looking at the forecasts for all of our ski mountains for the few days ahead —

Things look very similar (in terms of the forecast) for Wisp Resort.

A Peak Into Virginia

As we travel down into the Virginia mountains, things look a tick milder and not much in the way of snowmaking temperatures until Thursday night. Lows of 22-23 degrees both Thursday and Fridsay next week should make NEXT weekend’s turns awesome as clear skies are in that forecast.

North Carolina and Tennessee Ski Mountain Forecasts Look a Lot Like Virginia….

We could see a decent Monday with Mostly Cloudy skies but showers are likely today and mid-week before turning cold enough to crank up the snow guns Wednesday night or sometime later on Thursday.

According to a couple of Weather Gurus we follow, the weather pattern seems to be setting up nicely for some potential snow storms as we get into NEXT Friday. A few are reporting that areas along the coast, like Myrtle Beach might see some snow!

WHITE CHRISTMAS CHANCES???

So you’re saying there’s a chance? Nope, not really. While you can’t trust long range forecasts, weather models HAVE become more and more dependable. We will await Brad Panovich’s Skier’s Forecast for Christmas, but based on what we are seeing, it is looking GREAT for cold air to be in place as we look at the Christmas to New Year’s period, however, it is also looking drier during that period. There ARE some chances of snow around the 19th-22nd, but that looks like it will stay east and at least we will have cold, snow-making temperatures.

Our ski mountain ops crews at every ski area in the region are the best of the best at making snow and then pushing it around where needed to groom up some perfect corduroy for our skiing and snowboarding pleasure.
