Texas volleyball cancels Orange-White scrimmage

Texas volleyball will not hold its annual preseason Orange-White intrasquad scrimmage Saturday, the team announced on its social media platforms Monday.

School officials did not give a reason for the cancellation. The scrimmage had originally been scheduled for 10 a.m. at Gregory Gymnasium.

The Longhorns impressed in this past weekend’s scrimmage against Utah, winning the first three sets before dropping the final two sets while experimenting with the rotation. The team did play the scrimmage without reserve setter Rella Binney, who watched from the bench with her left foot in a walking boot.

Binney’s absence meant that starting setter Ella Swindle played the entire scrimmage against Utah. Texas doesn’t have another setter on the roster although freshman defensive specialist Callie Krueger served as a full-time setter at Cedar Park High School before transferring to nearby Dripping Springs for her senior season in 2024.

Texas coach Jerritt Elliott said after the scrimmage that Binney’s injury wasn’t serious. She participated in several celebratory dances with her teammates against Utah while hopping around on one foot.

Texas, ranked No. 5 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll, opens the season against No. 12 Creighton Aug. 29 followed by a match against No. 8 Wisconsin. Both matches will take place in Milwaukee, Wisc.
