BRIGHTON — A long-established park situated behind the Brighton Meijer has received a makeover and is set to open for public use this summer.
The Meijer Skate Park located at 8650 W. Grand River Ave. used to be a favorite gathering place for skateboarders, but approximately 20-25 years ago it fell into neglect, as noted by Southeastern Livingston County Recreation Authority Director Jason Spiller.
SELCRA is supported by Brighton Township and Green Oak Township.
The park’s remnants persisted until both townships sanctioned funding to renovate 50%. They introduced a baseball field and a soccer field, but the old skate pad remained with damaged concrete, raising significant safety issues.
According to Spiller, last summer the authority obtained approval from both municipalities to eliminate the old skate pad and replace it with open green space.
The comprehensive renovations feature two basketball courts, pickleball courts, and a shaded structure. Both townships provided $65,000 towards the initiative.
The park is expected to open this summer, operating daily “from dawn to dusk” from June to September, as shared by Spiller.
“In the past, due to its dilapidated state… the park was never fully accessible to the public,” Spiller remarked. “Thus, this summer marks the first genuine opportunity for the city to offer a fully operational park. Natural green space has been something the city of Brighton has been missing for many years.”
SELCRA will organize activities at the park, including sports, archery, and yoga.
“I want the community to take advantage of it,” Spiller expressed. “I want them to enjoy the park as it was intended.”
