In just a few days, Omaha will come together to celebrate Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford’s biggest win yet. Despite all of his success, he continues to give back to his city.Crawford co-founded B&B Sports Academy with the goal of giving kids a fighting chance. B&B Academy serves as a safe haven that teaches skills like discipline while being free for kids under 18.”It keeps you occupied so you don’t end up doing something you’re not supposed to,” says boxer Carlito Mejia.But before they wrap their hands up and step in the ring, Coach Hugh Reefe makes sure they’re getting their schoolwork done.”The tutoring program that we have is required. Nobody can get below a C,” says Director of Operations of B&B Sports Academy and coach Hugh Reefe.A program that’s enforced by Omaha Public School teacher Julie Pouncil.”I brought it on myself to make sure to go in and check and see. Are you missing any work? What’s that grade looking like?” says tutor Julie Pouncil.”They help them out with homework, and it keeps you out the streets. It keeps you motivated and disciplined also,” says boxer Alan Panduro.Setting the standard that work comes before play. Teaching kids about more than just throwing combinations inside the ropes.”Boxing isn’t just about boxing, but also goes into life—staying disciplined and knowing what you want in life,” says Panduro.Terence Crawford’s presence in the gym and community provides them inspiration.”That’s the world champ right in front of you. You know, you get motivated seeing that every day,” says Mejia.Motivating the youth to pay it forward to their hometown when they become successful.”That’s something I plan on doing in my future—giving back to the community once I turn pro and make it to that elite level,” says Mejia.Paving the way for future superstars coming out of Omaha.
