Genoa, Nev. — Gates open for Mountain Madness 5:30 p.m. today at Douglas High School with the Powder Puff game at 6 p.m. A teacher leg race during half time and the tug of war and milk chug competitions immediately following the game. The lip sync battle is 8 p.m.
There are a ton of things going on this weekend, including the Kids and Cars Car Show 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Jacks Valley Elementary School, the Heritage Park Gardens open house and plant sale 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Art & Wine on the Green at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center.
The Markleeville Market will close Montgomery Street in the Alpine County seat 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The market is hosted by Genoa’s Sierra Chef.
The Minden Big Chicken is celebrating National Smile Day on Saturday by handing out free ice cream cones with every combo purchase.
If the forecast for Saturday holds, the winds won’t really pick up until 5-7 p.m. with around 15 mph surface winds and 25 mph gusts. The fire weather watch for the weekend hadn’t budged one way or the other as of 7 a.m. today.
Carson Valley had two locations recording a high temperatures in the 90s on Thursday, including 93 degrees in the southern Gardnerville Ranchos and 95 degrees near Sunridge. The rest of the Valley topped out in the mid- to upper-80s.
I think I’m pretty safe saying today will be Minden’s warmest of 2025, so far, with a forecast high of 94 degrees under sunny skies and the north wind around 5 mph this afternoon. The forecast high for Saturday is 95 degrees.
