Here are the choices for the week, based on performances from Dec. 9 to 14.

  • Alexis Novoa, Apple Valley wrestling — Novoa captured third place in the 115-pound division at the Damien Wrestling Classic on Dec. 14. Novoa won the third-place match by no contest but picked up three pinfall victories along the way.
  • Bryan Castro, Victor Valley wrestling — Castro is one of four Victor Valley wrestlers to capture a title at the Bishop Amat Classic on Dec. 14. Castro picked up five victories in the 126-pound division. He picked up two pinfalls, two technical falls and scored a 3-0 decision over Banning’s Alejandro Orozco in the title match. 
  • Cesar Sandoval, Victor Valley wrestling — Sandoval won three of his four victories by pinfall at the Bishop Amat Classic on Dec. 14. Two of those pinfalls came in under a minute, including 22 seconds. Sandoval scored a 24-8 technical fall over teammate Max Ortega in the 120-pound title match. 
  • D’Angelo Martinez, Oak Hills boys soccer — Martinez scored four goals in three victories for the Bulldogs. Martinez scored a goal with an assist in a 3-0 victory over Carter on Dec. 10. In the Oak Hills Soccer Tournament on Dec. 14, Martinez scored a goal with an assist in the championship game, a 2-0 victory over San Gorgonio. Earlier in the day, he scored two goals and an assist in a 4-0 victory over Barstow.
  • Eric Castaneda, Adelanto wrestling — Castaneda went unbeaten in five matches at the High Desert Duals, hosted by Lancaster High School, on Dec. 14. Alvarez competed in the 215-pound division, helping Adelanto to a first-place finish in the Silver division.
  • Giselle Perez, Adelanto girls soccer — Perez continued her strong play in scoring four goals as the Saints picked up four victories, including one in penalty kicks over Barstow. 
  • Jadyn Bechtel, Apple Valley girls soccer — Bechtel scored six goals over three games, including a hat trick. In a 5-1 victory over Rancho Cucamonga on Dec. 12, Bechtel scored three goals and assisted in another. In tournament action on Dec. 14, Bechtel scored three goals in two games. She scored both goals in a 2-2 tie with Marina, and one in a 2-0 victory over Laguna Beach.

  • Jayden Childs, Barstow boys basketball — Childs helped lead the Aztecs to a pair of victories by recording double-doubles in each game. In an 84-23 victory over Lucerne Valley on Dec. 9, Childs scored 18 points with 18 rebounds, six assists and five steals. He followed that up with 17 points, 12 rebounds and a steal in a 60-59 victory over Serrano on Dec. 11.
  • Joseph Alvarez, Adelanto wrestling — Alvarez went unbeaten in five matches at the High Desert Duals, hosted by Lancaster High School, on Dec. 14. Alvarez competed in the 132-pound division, helping Adelanto to a first-place finish in the Silver division.
  • Liana Tsabur, Granite Hills girls soccer — Tsabur tallied a pair of hat tricks in leading the Cougars to two victories. On Dec. 10, Tsabur scored three goals in a 5-0 victory over Hesperia. She also scored three goals as Granite Hills beat Sultana 6-1 on Dec. 12. 
  • Mina Attalla, Barstow boys soccer — Attalla scored three goals in two games, leading the Aztecs to victory in both. In a 4-0 victory over Lucerne Valley on Dec. 9, Attalla had a hand in each goal. He scored two goals and assisted on the other two. Attalla also scored a goal in a 4-1 victory over Serrano on Dec. 11. 
  • Naomi Durrah, Silver Valley girls basketball — Durrah racked up 102 points, including two double-doubles, in three victories for the Silver Knights. She began the week with 36 points, 11 steals, five rebounds and four assists in a 62-24 victory over Big Bear on Dec. 10. The freshman dropped 42 points with 10 rebounds and five steals in a 52-33 victory over Desert on Dec. 12. The following night, Durrah scored 24 points with three rebounds, two assists and five steals in a 38-29 victory over University Prep on Dec. 13.  
  • Travis Butler, Riverside Prep boys basketball — Butler led the Silver Knights to victory in their lone game of the week. Butler scored 16 points with eight rebounds, an assist and two steals in a 70-43 victory over AAE on Dec. 10.

Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week’s games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
