The Lower Garden District spot by Tony Biancosino offers a small variety of pizzas by the slice or by the pie and was named one of the 22 best pizza shops in the world by The New York Times. You can also have dinner in their dark, moody tavern with a menu that includes the restaurant’s pizza pies, pasta, appetizers, salads and more. Dave Portnoy is regarded as an acquired taste. The media mogul is in town for Super Bowl LIX, along with Barstool influencers Brianna Chickenfry and Josh Richards. So Portnoy took the opportunity to try some pizza slices around town for his popular One Bite Pizza Reviews video series.
From the moment he walked in the door, Portnoy seemed to be impressed.
Portnoy ordered the upside-down margherita pizza, which features fresh mozzarella, pecorino-parm blend and a tomato sauce swirl on top. It’s finished with more pecorino-parm and basil.
Thursday’s episode was at St. Pizza, one of New Orleans’ newest pizza windows that celebrates its one-year anniversary this month.
New episodes of Portnoy’s pizza show are released each weekday at 5 p.m. Central.Breaking his one-bite pledge, Portnoy devoured most of a slice, also taking a big bite of the crust. Portnoy also tried That’s Amore in Metairie, a pizza place known for its Chicago-style deep dish pizza. He said the pie could stand up to Windy City pies and ranked it a 7.4 out of 10.
“This is really good, really fresh,” he said. “If you did a blindfold, you would never guess this is a New Orleans pizza, not in a million years.”The Barstool Sports owner and self-proclaimed foodie often divides the internet with his opinions on a variety of topics, from politics to sports to pop culture to food.
“Place looks awesome,” he said in the four-minute video. “High hopes here.”
He ranked the New Jersey-style slice a 7.8 out of 10, which he said is high for this type of pizza.
