WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—Avery Thompson’s career-best round of 2-under 70 helped lead the William & Mary women’s golf team to its first top five finish of the season, coming in fifth at the Tribe’s Kingsmill Intercollegiate.
Radford won the team honors of the 54-hole event played at Kingsmill’s River Course on Monday and Tuesday at 5-over. The Highlanders’ Macy Johnson won individual honors at 6-under.
W&M posted a team score of 55-over thanks to scores of 305-303-311. The Tribe’s second round 303 was its lowest round to par of the season.
Thompson, who’s previous career-best was a 1-over 72 two seasons ago, made the turn in 1-under 35 during the opening round. The Texan added three birdies on the back-nine to post another 35. She went on to post scores of 79 and 76 over the final two rounds to finish T-11. The junior’s best round this season heading into the week was a 76.
Sophomore Samantha Skinner improved every round for the Tribe, totaling 12-over for the event to finish in a tie for 17th. Skinner opened with a 77 before shaving off a stroke in each of the subsequent rounds. She posted her best nine of the event in Tuesday’s final round, shooting 1-under 35 on the back.
Jennifer Osborne also finished in the top-20 thanks to a very steady second round on Monday. The freshman parred 15 of her first 16 holes before having a birdie and bogey cancel each other out on her way to post 1-over 73. Osborne shot 81 and 77 in the first and third rounds to finish T-20 for the event.
Faith Garcia (T-30, 79-75-83) and Katie Suk (T-37, 79-80-83) rounded out the Tribe’s lineup.
Simone Senk (T-28, 81-77-78), Felicity Chen (T-48, 84-79-85) and Olivia Minjack (63rd, 96-95-106) all played as individuals for W&M.
