Three area athletes earn top seeds in WPIAL Track & Field Championships

California’s Lee Qualk will be looking for back-to-back WPIAL championships, while Beth-Center’s Deakyn DeHoet and Southmoreland’s Megan Mehall are seeking their first when they compete in the WPIAL Individual Track & Field Championships on Wednesday at Slippery Rock University’s William C. Lennox Track.

Qualk, a senior, won the boys long jump in Class 2A last year. He enters this year as the No. 1 seed after jumping 23-5.50 to win the Baldwin Invitational on May 2.

Qualk has also qualified for the district meet in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.23, which puts him as the 13th seed. Qualk qualified for the state championships last year after meeting the state-qualifying-standard in the 100.

DeHoet, a junior who attends Jefferson-Morgan High School where he plays baseball, competed for the Bulldogs this year because the Rockets don’t have a track & field program.

DeHoet has made the most of his first season in track & field, as he qualified as the top seed in the boys 200-meter dash in Class 2A with a time of 22.28. DeHoet is the second seed in the 100 at 10.95.

Beth-Center qualified for the 1,600-meter relay, which is an event DeHoet has run this season.

Mehall ran a season-best time of 2:15.60 to earn the top seed in the girls 800-meter run in Class 2A. The junior was second in the WPIAL and sixth in the state last year.

The top 24 performances in each event in Class 3A (boys and girls) this season earned a spot in the WPIAL championships. In Class 2A, the top 16 were awarded a berth in the District 7 meet.

The top five finishers in each event in Class 2A (boys and girls) and the top four in Class 3A (boys and girls) will qualify for the state meet on May 23 and 24 at Seth Grove Stadium on the campus of Shippensburg University.

The fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth finishers in Class 3A can qualify for states if they meet the state-qualifying-standard in their respective events. The sixth, seventh and eighth place winners in Class 2A will also advance to the state meet if they hit the state-qualifying standard.

The standards differ across all four divisions, with Class 3A usually demanding higher standards in boys or girls.

Laurel Highlands will be well represented in Class 3A on the girls side with four individual qualifiers and one relay team in seven events.

Diondra Brown will compete in the 400-meter dash and long jump at Slippery Rock. Brown qualified for the state meet in the 400 last season. She is the 10th seed in the 400 after posting a season-best time of 58.98. She is the No. 5 seed in the long jump at 17-11.5.

Neela Hill earned the ninth seed in the high jump at 5-3.

Isabella Baker is seeded 13th in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:22.62 and 22nd in the 800 at 2:24.89.

The Fillies’ Shayla Dues is the 14th seed in the 100 hurdles (15.68).

Laurel Highlands’ 3,200 relay team grabbed the last spot in Class 3A after running a season-best 10:22.61.

The Mustangs have two boys competing in four events in Class 3A, as Matt Schwertfeger earned a spot in the 1,600 and 3,200. The senior’s time of 4:18.16 in the 1,600 puts him as the No. 5 seed. He ran a 9:50.06 in the 3,200, and will be the 19th seed.

Teammate Grant Brambley is seeded 11th in the javelin (163-2) and pole vault (13-10).

Uniontown’s Grace Trimmer earned the fifth seed in the girls 3,200 in Class 3A with a time of 11:02.66.

The Red Raiders’ Cooper Gilleland earned a berth in the district meet with a season-best time of 4:34.45 in the boys 1,600. He will be the 24th seed.

Albert Gallatin’s Mia Medved is the 22nd seed in the girls 1,600 in Class 3A with a time of 5:32.59.

Geibel Catholic’s Emma Larkin is the third seed in two events in Class 2A, as she ran season-bests of 46.75 in the 300 hurdles and 58.67 in the 400-meter dash.

Brownsville freshman Aijanae Foster is the second seed in the girls high jump in Class 2A at 5-6.5. Foster is a member of the Lady Falcons’ 400-meter relay team that earned the eighth seed in 44.47. Jersey Feick-White, Ta’Veonna Harris and Amya Wilson have been the normal quartet in the event.

Brownsville’s Alexa Lewandowsky qualified as the ninth seed in the discus at 106-10. Teammate Caitlin Miske is 12th in the triple jump (34-1).

Levi Grogan will represent the Falcons after qualifying as the 10th seed in the long jump (21-3) in Class 2A.

Frazier’s Elisabeth Keaton is the 14th seed in the triple jump (33-9) in Class 2A.

Connellsville’s Glen Strickler is the eighth seed in the shot put at 47-9. Teammate Zachary Franks has qualified for the pole vault as the 12th seed. He has a season-best of 13-10. The Falcons compete in Class 3A.

Madelynn Johnson will represent the Lady Falcons in Class 3A as the 11th seed in the discus (113-5). Teammate Sophia Morrison is the 19th seed in the 100 hurdles at 16.23.

Belle Vernon’s Ryan Kent qualified in all three throwing events in Class 3A. The junior is the fifth seed in the discus (155-3), seventh in the shot put (47-10) and ninth in the javelin (165-3). Kent qualified for states last year in the discus.

The Lady Leopards’ Brooklyn Steeber qualified in the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200 in Class 3A. Teammates Courtney Martin (100 hurdles) and Skylar Salay (javelin) also earned a spot in the district meet.

California’s Carter Kent (800, 1,600), Christian Ross (javelin/triple jump), Andrew Typovsky (javelin), Landon Abercrombie (javelin), Niamh McClaffin (1,600), Alan Dennis (200) and its 400 relay team have qualified for the WPIAL meet.

The Lady Trojans’ Ella Neil (high jump), Hayley Gibson (shot put) and Ella Fike (100 hurdles) earned berths in Wednesday’s competition.

Waynesburg Central’s Zack Andrews (110/300 hurdles), Landon Darr (300 hurdles), Caden Fowler (discus), Mason Schroyer (pole vault), Jackson Brunell (pole vault) and Duncan Barto (shot put) qualified in Class 2A.

The Lady Raiders’ Emily Bochna (high jump), Jaden Tretinik (javelin) and Madison Blair (pole vault) had a season-best distance in the top 16 in Class 2A.

Mount Pleasant’s Jarett Garn (100/200), Damien Ohler (800), Bryson Bankosh (high/long jump), Aiden Johnson (long/triple jump), Gage Sowers (pole vault) and its 1,600 relay team will compete at Slippery Rock University.

The Lady Vikings’ Rylin Buhosh is the 11th seed in the 400-meter dash in girls Class 2A in 1:00.89. Mount Pleasant’s 3,200 relay team is the ninth seed with a time of 10:53.16.

Southmoreland’s Addie Billheimer (shot put), Kate Campbell (800), Morgan Riddle (triple jump) and Olivia Aumer (discus) have qualified for the district meet.

Montana Pro Rodeo Hall and Wall of Fame unveils 2025 inductees

This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is Jonnie Jonckowski from Billings, who has made significant contributions to the rodeo community throughout her life.

Billie Harms of Miles City has been recognized as the “Lady of the West,” an honor celebrating her influential role in promoting and preserving the rodeo tradition.

This year, the Hall welcomes several Legends: Randy Corely from North Platte, Neb., along with Montana’s own Jack Nystrom (Box Elder), Kevin Nordahl (Helena), Cliff Glade (Reed Point), Mike Lenning (Joliet), Wally Badgett (Miles City) and Bill Dygert (Red Lodge). These individuals have left an indelible mark on the fabric of Montana rodeo.

Additionally, Ty Thompson of Billings will receive the Great Montana Auctioneer title, while Jerry Billquist, now residing in Boerne, Texas, is honored as the Great Montana Veterinarian. The Great Montana Western Magazine award goes to Raised in the West Magazine, also based in Billings.

Aaron Flint, another Billings local, will receive the MPRHWF Western Media Award for contributions to the promotion of Montana rodeo. The Montana Cattle Women of Townsend will be acknowledged with the Great Montana Western Organization award. Charles Peabody from Joliet is recognized as the Great Montana Brand Inspector.

One of the highlights of the evening will be the recognition of the Chase Hawks Memorial Rough Stock Rodeo in Billings as the Great Montana Pro Rodeo, alongside the Western Heritage Award recipients Mike Gurnett of Helena, and Jim and Anne Overstreet, and the Lyle, Johnny and Anna Mae Jordan family from Belgrade.

The Hall of Fame will also celebrate three exceptional Montana rodeo families: the Tyler Holzum family, the Fred and Dixie Berzel family and the Rusty Stuart family.

In terms of ranching, June and David Volseth (Martinsdale), Lee Ranch (Forsyth), Sitz Angus Ranch (Harrison), Steinbeisser Ranch (Sidney) and Tooke Ranch (Ekalaka) are recognized as Great Montana Ranches.

Moreover, the Hall will honor past champions in the “Recognition of Rodeo Achievement Award” category, including Wally Badgett and Butch Bratsky for their outstanding collegiate careers in rodeo.

The Montana Pro Rodeo Hall and Wall of Fame, entirely composed of volunteers, is dedicated to honoring rodeo athletes while also funding a scholarship program for Montana high school rodeo athletes, the largest of its kind in the nation. Since its inception, the Hall has awarded $712,000 in scholarships to 256 students. The program awards $3,000 scholarships for the first two years of college education.

The primary fundraising event is the Hall’s Awards Banquet, with additional funds raised through the sale of Brand Blocks, which commemorate participants in the rodeo community.

This year’s ceremony promises to be a gathering of rodeo legends, families and supporters showcasing the spirit of Montana rodeo culture.

The pitcher recorded a perfect game with 10 strikeouts for Trinity Christian baseball to overcome Bozeman in Game 1 of the Region 1-2A championship series, on the road to the final four.

He placed first in a vote of top Northeast Florida performers that included Cloey Ballinger (Middleburg softball), Payten Cree (Episcopal girls lacrosse), Mason Hauseman (Ponte Vedra boys lacrosse), Jaylen Lewis (Mandarin boys track) and Mikayla Shavers (Fleming Island girls track).

The junior pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings in the Class 1A state semifinal against Brito Miami Private and also reached base four times in the final four.

Mila Lackowski, University Christian softball

The seventh-grade outfielder batted .625 in the week’s Region 1-1A playoffs, including three doubles, two RBI and four runs scored.

Sheridan/Buffalo HS Soccer: Both the Sheridan boys and girls soccer teams won the 4A East Regional Tournament played at Gillette.

The Broncs defeated the host team Thunder Basin on Friday in the semi-finals 2-1 and then toppled top seed Cheyenne Central on Saturday 3-1, to claim the #1 seed out of the East.

The Lady Broncs had to survive a shootout vs. Campbell County in Friday’s semi-finals, and then endured a 4-3 slugfest vs. Laramie in the regional championship game to maintain their undefeated record.

The State Tournament starts this coming Thursday at Gillette.

The Sheridan girls will start things off at 9am vs. Kelly Walsh at Thunder Basin High School.

The Lady Broncs have only won the state championship once, and that was back in 1993.

The Sheridan boys will play Rock Springs in the first round at 11am at Campbell County High School.

The Broncs only state championship win was in 2011.

Meanwhile, 3A does not play a regional tournament.

Teams are seeded based on where they finish at the end of the regular season.

The Buffalo boys through tie-breakers have the #1 seed out of the East and will play at 11am Thursday vs. Powell.

The Buffalo girls have the East #4 seed and will also play Powell on Thursday at 2pm.

Sheridan/Johnson County HS Track and Field: The Sheridan and Buffalo boys and girls teams, as well as the Big Horn boys, all brought home the team trophies at their respective regional meets.

The Tongue River girls were 2nd, the TR boys were 3rd and the BH girls were 4th.

The state meet starts on Thursday in Casper.

The Sheridan boys are aiming for a repeat and will try to win their 4th state championship in 5 years.

The Sheridan girls are also trying to repeat as champs and the Rams will try to make it 3 in a row.

Both Buffalo teams haven’t won since back in the 1980s.

Sheridan HS Softball: In their first year of existence, the Sheridan Lady Broncs have qualified for the state tournament.

On Friday the team defeated Natrona County 14-4, and then beat Kelly Walsh in the semi-finals 28-13, but fell in the regional championship game on Saturday vs. Campbell County 16-4.

Sheridan will play Cheyenne Central on Thursday at 2pm in the first round of the state tournament in Cheyenne.

Unlike other Wyoming High School Sports, the state softball tournament is a true double-elimination tournament, meaning you can lose once, and still play your way back to the championship game, which will be played on Saturday.

Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball: The Sheridan Troopers went 3-0 in games played this weekend in Park County.

On Saturday, the team swept a double-header at Powell, and then won the first game of a scheduled double-header at Cody.

Game 2 was rained out.

The Troopers will next play Friday, Saturday and next week Monday at a round robin tournament at Gillette.

Colorado Rockies Baseball: The Colorado Rockies lost 2 out of 3 games at Arizona this past weekend.

The team lost on Friday 8-zip.

On Saturday, the Rocks won a slugfest 14-12.

Jordan Beck hit both a solo and a 2-run home run in that game.

Ezequiel Tovar had a solo shot, and Kyle Farmer hit a 2-run bomb for the cause.

Arizona won yesterday 1-nothing.

Colorado returns home today to start a 7-game homestand with 4 games vs. Philadelphia, followed by 4 games against the New York Yankees.

First pitch today is scheduled for 6:40pm.

Denver Nuggets Basketball/NBA Playoffs: The Denver Nuggets got ran over and saw their season end yesterday at Oklahoma City 125-93, in Game 7 of their best of 7 western conference semi-final series.

The Thunder will host Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals tomorrow vs. Minnesota.

The Eastern Conference Finals will start on Wednesday between Indiana and New York.

NHL Playoffs: The defending Stanley Cup champ Florida Panthers went into Toronto yesterday and beat the Maple Leafs 6-1 in the Game 7, of their Eastern Conference Semi-Final series, and would win the series 4-games-to-3.

The Eastern Conference Finals start tomorrow between Florida and Carolina, while the Western Conference Finals start on Wednesday, between Edmonton and Dallas.

Nouvel Catholic sophomore Claire Long claimed three titles in the Division 4 regional track meet Saturday at Fowler.

Nouvel finished seventh in the girls standings, but Long won the 100-meter dash in 12.97 seconds, the 200 in 27.24 seconds and the 400 in 59.58 seconds.

Fowler won the girls team title with193.33 points, followed by Breckenridge in second (94.5), Michigan Lutheran Seminary in sixth (45.33), Nouvel in seventh (30), Saginaw Arts & Sciences 10th (20), St. Charles 11th (19), Merrill 13th (11) and Coleman 14th (10.5)

Fowler also won the boys event with 179.5 points, beating out second-place Michigan Lutheran Seminary (131.5) and Breckenridge (59). Coleman was seventh (37), Nouvel 10th (19), St. Charles 11th (17), Merrill 12th (4) and SASA 12th (4).

Breckenridge’s Zander Mapes claimed a pair of championships, winning the discus in 157 feet, 10 inches and the shot put in 48-6 ¾. Breckenridge added another first by Anthony Rowe in the 1,600 in 4:49.53.

Baseball

Alpena Tournament: Freeland went 3-0 and claimed the Alpena Friends Together benefit tournament title Saturday, beating Sault Ste. Marie, 13-3. The 19-7 Falcons scored seven runs in the first inning to put the game away. Connor Lasceski, who earned the win, had three hits, while Jake Metiva also had three hits with two RBIs. Liam Rump and Kaden Gerzseny added two hits each. Freeland opened the tourney with a 9-1 win over Alpena, with Carter McLaren earning the win with a five-inning three-hitter. Jake Clawson had two hits with three RBIs, while Tucker Hileman, Gerzseny, Rump, Lasceski and Metiva added two hits each. In an 11-4 win over Cheboygan, Karson Worth did not allow an earned run in three innings of relief. Worth and Gerzseny had two hits each, with Worth driving in three runs. Gerzseny and Lasceski were named to the all-tournament team.

Shark Invitational: Michigan Lutheran Seminary beat Houghton Lake, 13-2, and St. Louis, 3-0, to claim the St. Louis Shark Invite championship. Owen Mason earned the win over Houghton Lake, striking out two in three innings. Noah Reif, Will Salgat and Eli Lewis had two hits each for the Cardinals, with Lewis driving in three runs. Reif threw a shutout in the second game, striking out eight and allowing four hits. Zachary Scharrer led the MLS offense with a triple, run, walk and stolen base. Easton Seleski had two hits for St. Louis.

Frankenmuth Invite: Frankenmuth opened with an 8-2 win over Standish-Sterling, scoring six runs in the third inning. Brady Mort had two hits, two RBIs and a stolen base to lead the Eagles, with Luke Purves walking and scoring twice. Caden Sommerfield earned the win with two shutout innings. Frankenmuth dropped a 4-0 decision to Midland Dow in Game 2. Harper O’Keefe earned the win with a four-hitter, striking out eight for Dow. Carter Harcek knocked in two runs for the Chargers. Purves reached base twice on a hit and hit by pitch.

Softball

Frankenmuth Invitational: Frankenmuth went 3-0 in its invitational, starting with a 6-0 win over Bay City Central. Chloe Compau threw a no-hitter with no hits and no walks in seven innings, striking out 13. Miranda Polly led the offense with four hits, including her sixth homer of the season, with Izzy Bernthal walking twice. The Eagles scored three runs in the sixth to beat Yale, 8-7, in the second game, with Mady Goodwin earning the win and getting two hits on offense. Polly led the offense with three hits, with Compau adding two hits. Compau threw a two-hit shutout in a 5-0 win over Shepherd, giving her a 15-0 record with 200 strikeouts in 92 innings. Claire Edwards had two hits, with Bernthal getting a hit, walk and run.

Swan Valley Invitational: Swan Valley went 3-0 in its own invite, with Violet Boehler finishing the invite with six hits, including two homers. Mia Robinson struck out nine to earn an 8-4 win over Unionville-Sebewaing in Game 1, with Hailey Koch leading the offense with three hits, including a homer, and five RBIs. Izzy Coffel, Boehler and Robinson had two hits each. In a 13-0 win over Petoskey, Robinson struck out six in three innings for the win. Alivia Guilbeaux had three hits for the Vikings, with Shiloh Charboneux and Boehler adding two hits each. Boehler hit a homer and drove in three runs. Swan Valley finished with a 12-4 win over Bay City Western, with Layla Shanks earning the win with four strikeouts in three innings. Chloe Bryce and Guilbeaux had three hits each, with Coffel, Koch and Boehler adding two hits each, including Boehler’s homer.

St. Louis Grand Slam Tourney: St. Louis reached the championship game at the fourth annual Coach Hanline Grand Slam tourney. St. Louis opened with a 4-2 win over Dansville, with Paige Luneack striking out eight. Takoha Henry and Morgan Leonard led the Sharks with two hits each. St. Louis followed with a 15-0, three-inning win over Beaverton, with Luneack earning another win. Ellie Katt led the Sharks with three hits, with Brynn Saxton adding two hits. Henry hit her first homer of the season. St. Louis (17-8) lost an 8-0 decision to Lake Fenton in the championship game.

Girls Soccer

Midland High 8, Traverse City St. Francis 0: Midland High finished the regular season with an 18-0 record after blowing past a Traverse City St. Francis team that was ranked eighth in the state in Division 3. Elliott Hays earned a hat trick to lead the Chemics, with Alahna Becket adding two goals. Sydney Fulcher, Theresa Wilk and Lizzy Striebel adding single goals. Beckett and Morgan Ludwig had two assists each, with Reagan Vokal, Striebel and Moriah Fulcher adding one assist teach. Niobe Marchalant and Cady McPeak shared time in goal for the shutout.
