Sophomore Matt Hudson racked up five goals to lead the Colorado College men’s lacrosse team over Rhodes College 21-12 in the 2025 season opener. Hudson finished with seven points, two assists, eight shots, including six on target. 
 
Junior Braydon Ellis followed suit with four goals off five shots (four on goal). He also added a ground ball and caused two turnovers. Freshman Max Vota had quite the debut. The Folsom, Calif. native dished three goals and two assists. He also grabbed three ground balls and finished with 10 shots. 
 
“We’ve said since the fall that if you take care of the little things, the big things take care of themselves,” head coach Mike Horowitz said. “This is a great start to 2025, but our focus remains on the little things.”
 
Andrew Tan matched his career-high with two goals, and Nick Bell scored twice. Freshman Logan Chapman scored his first career goal. Other CC goals came from Aidan Niklaus, Karsten Nyarady, Trevor Mackels and Wyatt Furda
 
The Lynx struck first, going up 2-0 with back-to-back goals from Drew Downes, who led Rhodes with three goals. 
 
CC responded by scoring four straight goals, two from both Ellis and Hudson. Aidan Niklaus and Charlie Faldi each collected assists on the Hudson goals. 
 
Rhodes responded with 2:57 remaining to cut the lead down to 4-2, but the Tigers and Matt Hudson countered with back-to-back goals, including a man-up strike with 1:25 remaining. 
 
CC went into the second quarter, leading 6-3. In the second, Rhodes scored the first two goals of the quarter again, drawing back within one goal with 12:41 left in the half. 
 
Ellis scored his third of the game at 11:50, remaining unassisted, followed by Trevor Mackels taking the faceoff and scoring solo to go back up 8-5. 
 
Vota scored his first career goal with 9:39 remaining after an assist from Nyaraday. CC didn’t score again for three minutes, allowing Rhodes to score consecutive goals, which cut the lead down to 9-7. Tan responded for CC, scoring an unassisted goal with 6:57 left. 
 
Both teams traded goals to end the half as CC led 12-9 at the break. 
 
CC went on their second-best run of the day, scoring seven goals in the third quarter, which was highlighted by Vota getting his second and third. The Tigers held the Lynx to only eight shots in the quarter compared to their 16 shots. 
 
The Tigers held on in the fourth, scoring twice through Furda and Bell. They held Rhodes to only one goal off 10 shots, and CC rolled to a 21-12 victory. 
 
CC outshot Rhodes 54-51, including 36-25 on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Jackson Lesher started his first-ever career and collected his first win. The Mill Valley, Calif. native made 13 saves. 
 
The Tigers turn around to take on Hope College on Monday at 6 pm MT at Washburn Field. Hope lost to Rhodes on Saturday 15-7.
