OSHKOSH, Wis.
– When Carol Anhalt came to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1964, women’s intercollegiate athletic programs did not yet exist. By the time she retired in 1989 after serving as head women’s basketball coach for 19 seasons, UW-Oshkosh sponsored nine women’s sports and had won five women’s national championships. Anhalt passed away on Dec. 3 in Oshkosh at the age of 92.
Anhalt became an instructor in UW-Oshkosh’s Physical Education Department in 1964 and voluntarily coached basketball, tennis, track & field and volleyball in the women’s recreational leagues. While teaching and coaching, and amidst resistance from society and administration, Anhalt promoted statewide conversation to gather support for the passing of the Equal Rights Amendment and Title IX.
“Carol was an educator and progressive at her core. She was a role model, who was a leader in women’s athletics from the very beginning at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh”, Assistant Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator, Abby Gildernick expressed on Monday. “All of the UW-Oshkosh family mourns her loss, and our thoughts are with her entire family during this difficult time.”
Anhalt helped organize a women’s basketball league for other Wisconsin universities and colleges during the 1970-71 academic year. UW-Oshkosh was a member of that league and Anhalt coached the Titans to a 7-2 record in their inaugural season as an intercollegiate program.
In 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment and Title IX passed. UW-Oshkosh increased its sponsorship of women’s intercollegiate sports and became a member of what is now called the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Oshkosh’s first women’s basketball season as a member of the WIAC resulted in a 9-5 record, including a 40-32 victory over Wisconsin.
Anhalt coached women’s basketball at UW-Oshkosh on a voluntary basis until 1976 when it became a paid position. The St. Paul, Minn., native then coached the Titans through the 1989 season. Without the unpaid and selfless efforts of individuals like Anhalt, Helen Briwa, Janet Moldenhauer and Patricia O’Connor, women’s athletics at UW-Oshkosh may never have taken flight.
“Carol Anhalt was a true trailblazer here at UW-Oshkosh”, said current women’s basketball head coach Brad Fischer. “Not just for women’s basketball, but for women’s sports as a whole. We take for granted in the year 2024 what it took for people like Carol to help women’s sports become a normal part of the college experience. Her persistence, leadership, and influence helped establish our program and set the standard for all of us who have followed her lead.”
As the head women’s basketball coach at UW-Oshkosh, Anhalt showed just as much comfort on the court as she displayed in the classroom. Her teams compiled a 19-year record of 239-124, competed in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) postseason five times and captured the 1985 WIAC title. Anhalt currently ranks eighth in the WIAC with her 239 career coaching victories.
UW-Oshkosh registered a winning season under Anhalt every year from 1971-79. The Titans played in the AIAW postseason tournament from 1973-77 while placing third in the WIAC in 1978 and 1979. UW-Oshkosh won five AIAW postseason games, including two in 1974 when the Titans defeated Southern Illinois University, 39-35, and Marshall University (W. Va.), 40-39.
In the 1980s, UW-Oshkosh continued to enjoy success with Anhalt patrolling the sidelines. The Titans tallied seven winning seasons, including records of 17-4 in 1982, 18-8 in 1985, 17-7 in 1988 and 16-8 in 1989. UW-Oshkosh’s 1985 squad won the WIAC title after posting tournament victories of 91-72 over UW-Eau Claire, 94-81 over UW-River Falls and 85-69 over UW-Whitewater.
Anhalt coached 15 AII-WIAC First Team performers, including Terri Schumacher who was named the NCAA Division III Player of the Year by the American Women’s Sports Federation in 1985.
By 1971, Anhalt had spent over 25 years in higher education and was among a small group of women from across the country who taught, coached and owned a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degree.
Anhalt, who was a member of the UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame committee for several years and was inducted into the UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006, enjoyed her retirement as an Oshkosh resident, traveling, camping and participating in other outdoor activities. She was a devoted fan of her favorite team, the Green Bay Packers, and was especially joyful when they would beat the Vikings.
A visitation will be held at Seefeld Funeral Home (1025 Oregon St.) in Oshkosh on Wednesday, Jan. 8 beginning at 1 p.m. Flowers can be sent to Seefeld and memorial trees can be ordered through Seefeld’s website.
