ALLENDALE, Mich. — The Western Michigan track and field squad achieved impressive results at their season-opening competition. The athletes participated in the GVSU Holiday Open earlier today. 

Tess Van Dyk and Bri’Yanna Robinson excelled in the throwing events, with Van Dyk participating in the shot put and Robinson in the weight throw. Van Dyk secured second place with a throw of 14.79 meters, while Robinson finished sixth at 17.10 meters. 

In the 60-meter hurdles, Jade Celestine made her debut for WMU, qualifying for the finals in this event and recording a time of 9.00 in the final round. Soniya Jones and Layla Wallace performed well in the 400-meter dash, achieving times of 1:01.27 and 1:03.01, respectively. 

Continuing with the sprint events, Wallace clocked in at 26.99 in the 200-meter dash. The distance runners, including Rebekah Asselin, LaJeanee’ Porter, and Reagan Viau had commendable performances in the 800-meter run. Asselin led the pack with a time of 2:16.47, while Porter finished in 2:26.21, and Viau recorded a mark of 2:32.23. 

UP NEXT
WMU will take a break until the Wolverine Invite on Jan. 11, 2025. The Broncos are scheduled for six additional indoor meets leading up to the MAC Championships.
