Three Red Wing weightlifters, representing the Red Wing Weightlifting Club, competed at the Minnesota High School Weightlifting Championships at Cannon Falls March 8.Josh Delk and Oskar Jensen were each winners in their respective weight and age divisions.Delk ended up narrowly besting Grant Meyer of Lakeville South for the gold in the 83 kg body weight division for the U18 age group. He snatched 211 pounds and reached a lift of 266 pounds in the clean and jerk for a total of 477 pounds (217 kg).Jensen also won gold in the 55 kg body weight division for the U18 age group. He had lifts of 121 pounds (snatch) and 156 pounds (clean and jerk), ending with a total of 277 pounds (126 kg).Noah Delk, who placed fourth last year, was runner-up to Christian Anderson of Atkin in the 73 kg body weight, U16 division. Noah was just one kilogram behind Anderson with a total of 171 kg (376 pounds). He had a snatch of 165 pounds (75 kg) and clean and jerk of 211 pounds (96 kg).As the weightlifting club in Red Wing begins its sixth decade of competition coach John Drewes said the three who placed were surprising.“The two golds and one silver was a surprise for me, but each of the three was in the top three on the ranking list of their class at season’s end,” he said. “With roughly 120 lifters at the state championships, “each of the bodyweight classes has a significant, rather difficult, qualifying total that must be equaled or exceeded for entry in this final event.”
