A new volleyball season begins on Tuesday night for the Tyler Legacy Lady Raiders.
Legacy will also have a new head coach as Bryan Winegeart stepped down after six seasons. Leo Scott, who has spent the past nine seasons at Grace Community School, will now lead the Lady Raiders.
“They’re going to compete really well,” Scott said. “I think we’re going to surprise some people and have a winning season.”
The Lady Raiders finished 2024 with a 17-22 record overall and a 2-10 mark in district and missed out on the postseason for the third consecutive year after competing in the playoffs the previous five seasons.
Scott was joined by senior defensive specialist Kate Priest, sophomore setter Annie Trahan, senior setter Abby Trahan and senior outside hitter Taylor Woods at a fall sports media day at the CHRISTUS Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute on July 31 to talk about the upcoming season.
“I’m really excited,” Priest said. “We have a new coach, so obviously there’s going to be new challenges and new things we need to adapt to, but it’s going really well so far. I’m excited to see how we play this fall, but hopefully we can make the playoffs and our chemistry will be good.”
“Last year, getting pulled up was definitely a challenge,” Annie Trahan said. “Getting experience last year will be good for me this season. I’m looking to start off the season and grow and get closer to the girls.”
“I’m really excited for the season,” Abby Trahan said. “I think we’re going to do really good. The team is meshing together well, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how far we go.”
“The expectation is for every to be compatible and have a strong mental load with everything,” said Woods, who has committed to Louisiana Tech. “We have a new coaching staff and new players coming in, so that’s going to be a big step. We have to have everybody wanting to put their best foot ahead and making sure we’re doing the right thing no matter what.”
Returning with Woods (477 kills, 220 digs, 29 blocks, 31 aces), Priest (360 digs, 27 aces, 65 assists), Abby Trahan (423 assists, 118 digs, 30 aces) and Annie Trahan (246 assists, 100 digs, 24 aces) are Blaire Leitsch (170 kills), Mikel reed, Olivia Graves and Peyton Neely (91 kills).
Legacy competes in District 10-6A with Longview, Forney, North Forney, Rockwall, Rockwall-Heath and Royse City.
Legacy will take on Gilmer and Whitehouse in a tri-match to open the season beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Whitehouse.
