Battle Ground Academy relay teams

The Wildcats clinched their first Division II-A Middle Region track and field championship last week with the 4X100, 4X200 and 4X400 relay teams paving the way by clinching region titles, including a pair of school-record runs. Fletcher Fields, Gabriel Min, Arnett Hayes and Locke Kennedy combined for a 1:29.69 in the 4X200 to set a top mark, while Kennedy, Hunter Hervey, Cates Kennedy and Cash Britt produced a 3:26.30 to take the 4X400 and produce another school record. The BGA boys enter the state tournament with the top times in the 4X100 and 4X400 to go with the No. 3 time in the 4X200.

Aria Burton, Brentwood

The senior captain scored three goals and assisted on three more to lead the Bruins into the Division I-AA state lacrosse championship after a 10-7 win over Franklin in the semifinals. Burton also won several crucial face-offs and assisted on the final two clinching goals by teammate Elizabeth Ward.

Adriana Callahan, Page

The senior racked up 16 hits in five District 10-4A tournament games last week scoring five runs, driving in four more and stealing three bases. In a 7-3 win over Nolensville, she batted 4-for-4 with an RBI, run scored and all three stolen bases.

Lucas Casaletta-Holmes, Fairview

The senior swept 100- and 200-meter runs at the Class AA Middle Section meet and helped the Fairview relay teams earn top finishes. He clocked a personal-best run of 10.89 seconds to win the 100 and another PR of 21.97 to clinch the 200. The times are both No. 4 in Class AA this season heading into the state meet.

Cayla Clemmer, Brentwood Academy

The senior batted 4-for-8 with a home run, double and five RBIs to help lead the Eagles past Pope John Paul II in the first round of the Division II-AA state softball tournament – a 16-6 and 8-6 win in the best of 3 series. In the second win, Clemmer scattered six hits with two earned, recording eight strikeouts over eight innings for the win in the circle. She managed four Ks in the five-inning opening win.

Carter Cumming, Independence

The steady senior helped lead the Eagles into the Class 4A Sectional round by going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and another driven in as Independence topped Lincoln County 11-0, avenging a 2-1 walkoff loss in the Region 5-4A semifinals when Cumming went 2-for-3. He added another run and RBI in a 10-2 elimination game against Nolensville.

Gavin Johnson, Centennial

The sophomore lowered his 400-meter personal best to 47.99 seconds and in doing so, set the lowest mark in the state this outdoor season to witness the Class AAA Section 3 meet last week.

Canon Kinder, Brentwood

The senior set the top mark in the state by winning the Class AAA Section 3 meet with a 16-foot pole vault. The defending decathlon state champion also earned 6,871 points to win the multis at the sectional picking up wins in the throwing events and pole vault – a 15-5 clearance.

Miller Mabury, Battle Ground Academy

The senior set a couple PRs at the DII-A Middle Region meet by clearing 23-5 1/2 in the long jump and 6-6 in the high jump – both region wins. His long jump broke his own school record and is the fourth best jump in the state this season regardless of classification.

Marina Mason, Brentwood

The senior pitched 34 innings last week over five games as the Bruins settled for third in the District 10-4A tournament. Mason allowed just four runs, collected 59 strikeouts with an 0.81 ERA and 0.86 WHIP.

Maddi McGowan, Fairview

The junior helped the Yellow Jackets reach the District 11-AAA championship when she homered twice, doubled and racked up six RBIs in a 14-4 win over Sycamore. She also went 2-for-4 with another RBI in a 2-1 win over Montgomery Central. McGowan took the loss in a 2-0 championship setback against Creek Wood scattering four hits with just one earned five Ks and a walk over six innings.

Isabel Melton, Page

The sophomore lifted the Patriots into the District 10-4A championship with a walkout single in the 10th inning for a 1-0 win against Brentwood in an elimination contest last week.

Caroline Merville, Ravenwood

The junior quarterback scored three touchdowns and broke up a pass to lead the Raptors to a 34-14 win over Stone Memorial to capture the first TSSAA Girls Flag Football championship. Merville rushed 12 times for 84 yards and two TDs to go with 5-for-8 passing for 104 yards with another TD.

Claire Stegall, Nolensville

The decorated senior swept the 800 and 1,600 meters at the Class AAA Section 3 meet turning in a 2:10.17 and a 4:50.05. Stegall, who also helped lead the Knights’ 4X400 relay team to a section win, owns the top times in the state in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

Aaron Sylvester, Nolensville

The junior scored four goals and dished out one assists in a 15-9 win at Farragut to lift the Knights into the Division I-AA state lacrosse championship. Sylvester also scooped up three ground balls.

They're off! New Delaware Derby highlights 2025 horse racing season at Delaware Park

It’s time to pull back the curtain on the 88th season of live thoroughbred racing at Delaware Park.A nine-horse field is scheduled to go to the post at 12:35 p.m. on May 14, the first of eight races scheduled on the opener of 75 live racing days through Oct. 11.A lot of familiar faces will be returning among the jockeys and trainers scheduled to compete, but there are some schedule changes and a new stakes race that should add some excitement at the Stanton oval.Racing scheduleRacing will be held weekly on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for most of the meet, although there will be no racing on May 15.Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Honor D Lady and jockey Jose Ortiz win the 2024 Delaware Handicap on July 7. Delaware Park's marquee race has been moved to the fall this year and will be run on Sept. 28.

Friday racing will be added on May 30, June 6 and 13, and each Friday from July 4 through Aug. 15. Two Sunday cards – on Sept. 14 and Sept. 28 – will also be held.

First post time will be 12:35 on each racing day.

Big new race: The Delaware Derby

It won’t rival the big one in Kentucky, but Delaware Park is finally throwing its hat – in this case a derby – into the ring with a new race that could attract some of the horses who ran in America’s most famous race on May 3.

The inaugural $200,000 Delaware Derby will be held on Saturday, June 14 as part of a card including the Grade III, $300,000 Delaware Oaks, a 1 1/16-mile test for 3-year-old fillies that is traditionally the track’s second-biggest race.

Erricka Sumatra likely had the largest hat - designed by Shontay Raquel of Atlanta - at the Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. We'll find out how far Delaware horse racing fans are willing to take their fashion on June 14 during the inaugural Delaware Derby, which will include hat and bonnet contests at Delaware Park.

The 1 1/16-mile Delaware Derby could potentially attract some colts who ran in the Kentucky Derby and/or Preakness who could see a win in Delaware as a springboard to bigger 3-year-old summer targets, like the Haskell Stakes in July at Monmouth Park or the Travers Stakes at Saratoga in August.

The track will have several promotions on Delaware Derby Day, including T-shirt and hat giveaways while supplies last, a Delaware-themed derby and bonnet hat contest, special Delaware-themed cocktails served in commemorative cups, and kids activities including pony rides, balloon sculptures and face painting in the grove.

Delaware Handicap moves to fall

The Grade III Delaware Handicap, which has traditionally been run in early July, will be contested on Sunday, Sept. 28. The track’s biggest race will have a purse of $400,000.

The DelCap has also been shortened to 1 ⅛ miles for only the second time in its 88-year history. The race was contested at 1¼ miles – known as a rarely long distance for fillies and mares – in every year but one from 1951-2022.

Delaware Park officials shortened the race to 1 3/16 miles two years ago, and cut another 16th of a mile this year. The new date and distance could position the Delaware Handicap as a prep race for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, which is also 1 ⅛ miles and will be run five weeks later, on Nov. 1, at Del Mar in southern California.Leading trainer returnsThe race for leading trainer may end on the opening day of the meet.Jamie Ness has led in wins in each of the last 10 years, and 12 times overall. He has horses entered in five of the eight races on the May 14 card, while no other trainer has more than three entered.Jamie Ness has led Delaware Park trainers in wins for 10 consecutive years, and 12 times overall.“We have been doing this for 25 years and we have slowly built this up,” Ness told Delaware Park racing information coordinator Chris Sobocinski. “We are in a region that allows me to have strings at multiple tracks and still be able to manage it right. Delaware Park is the central spot, which is why it’s pretty much our home base.”Ness has won at nearly a 25 percent clip over the last five years at Delaware Park, with an average payoff of $5.50. Last year, his entries won at a 30 percent rate on both the dirt and turf courses. He won 49 percent of the time with favorites, 23 percent with 2-year-olds, 31% with 3-year-olds and 28% with maidens and claimers. In other words, every time he sends one out, pay attention.Don’t sleep on this trainerGreg Compton doesn’t have the sheer number of horses to compete with Ness, but he finished a career-high sixth in the Delaware Park trainer standings last year and is returning to Stanton after finishing fifth at the ultra-competitive meet at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas, this spring.“We should be coming to Delaware with between 40 to 50 horses that we think will help the program from top to bottom pretty well,” Compton told Sobocinski.Compton has the potential to have two strong entries – Kinzie Queen and G W’s Girl – in the Delaware Oaks. He also trains Auto Glide, who won the $175,000 Battery Park Stakes at Delaware Park last year.Other prominent trainers expected to compete in Stanton this year include Edward Allard, Lynn Ashby, Brett Brinkman, Keri Brion, Gary Capuano, Gary Contessa, Cathal Lynch, Graham Motion, Kerri Raven, McLean Robertson, Andrew Simoff, Michael Stidham and Karin Wagner.Jockeys to watchFive of the top seven finishers in last year’s jockey standings – Jaime Rodriguez, Julio Hernandez, Carol Cedeno, Jose Batista and Daniel Centeno – are scheduled to ride at least once on the opening day card.Daniel Centeno rides Miss Marissa to victory in the 2021 Delaware Handicap. The veteran jockey is back at the Stanton oval after finishing seventh in the Delaware Park standings with 24 victories last season.A new rider to watch is Martin Chuan, who finished 14th with 13 winners at Oaklawn Park this spring and has been riding recently at Laurel and Penn National.Contact Brad Myers at bmyers@delawareonline.com.
