Later this month, two of the nation’s biggest collegiate water polo programs will clash here in the City of Coronado.
On August 29th, the UCLA men’s water polo program is set to take on the United States Naval Academy water polo team at the Brian Bent Memorial Aquatics Complex (BBMAC). It will mark the second time in the last three years that the United States Naval Academy water polo team has played a match here in Coronado.
The last time the Midshipmen played here in Coronado was back on September 4th of 2023, when they faced off against then-reigning National Champions UC Berkley. For the showdown on August 29th, Navy will once again be playing the reigning national champions, as UCLA is coming off a national championship in 2024.
“We’re extremely excited to host these two great programs for a match. There are a lot of other places they could have chosen to go to, but they wanted to be here in Coronado. I think that’s pretty special,” said Site Director Jesse Smith.
Coronado and the United States Naval Academy are also quite well connected with one another. However, the game on the 29th will have a rather cool local connection. 2025 Coronado High School graduate and current freshman at the US Naval Academy, Ryan Mondzelewski, plays for the United States Naval Academy water polo team. He will be returning to the BBMAC for what should be his first match as a Midshipman.
“It will be great to see Ryan back here in the pool and competing at the college level,” said Smith.
Tickets to the game are set at $10 for adults and $5 for children. All money from ticket sales will go to the Coronado Aquatics Club. To purchase tickets, visit nadopolo.com.
“We hope to see a lot of people come out to the BBMAC,” said Smith. “There are a lot of players with local ties to San Diego that will be playing in this game. Plus, I think it’s great for a lot of kids in town to see some great up-and-coming players in the sport.”
