LAST TIME OUT
Led by defending Big Ten long jump champion Charles Godfred’s win in the long jump, the University of Minnesota track and field program brought back four wins from the 115th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. In total, between the Drake Relays and the Gary Wilson Invitational, which was held in Minneapolis, the Maroon and Gold posted five program top 10 performances from Wednesday and Saturday.
Godfred’s long jump win came in the ‘World Athletics Continental Tour’ section of the Drake Relays on Saturday. Godfred leaped beyond eight meters twice during the competition, winning with his third attempt of 8.13m (26-8 1/4 | +3.5 m/s). Godfred’s best non-wind aided leap was his 8.03m (26-4 1/4 | +1.8 m/s) which came on attempt two. Godfred’s wind-aided leap puts him at the No. 2 spot in the NCAA this season and the No. 1 spot in the Big Ten less than a month until he defends his crown in Eugene, Ore., at the 2025 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Lastly, Godfred’s winning mark broke a 64-year-old Drake Relays long jump record that was held by three-time Olympic medalist Ralph Boston in 1961. MINNESOTA’S MEN RANKED SIXTH NATIONALLY
The University of Minnesota men’s track and field team came in at the No. 6 spot in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) team rankings. The rankings that dropped on April 29 saw the Golden Gophers inside the nation’s top six for the fifth consecutive week.
Minnesota’s men have been as high as No. 2 this season, which was the second highest ranking in program history. The only other time the men have been ranked higher in the current USTFCCCA ranking system was back in 2023 when the team opened the first outdoor ranking at No. 1. That season the Golden Gopher men finished the season ranked No. 20 and finished tied for 20th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Additionally since 1921, according to the USTFCCCA, in the final national poll Minnesota has been ranked No. 1 once (1948).
Additionally, Minnesota’s women’s team came in the latest team rankings at No. 32 in the country after their performances last weekend.
MINNESOTA’S EVENT SQUAD RANKINGS
Alongside the national rankings, the USTFCCCA released its latest Event Squad rankings with the Gophers having six event groups across men and women that sit in the top 10. The men’s long jump (7.63m | 25-0 1/2 average) and men’s hammer throw (68.92m | 226-2 average) are the highest ranked groups at No. 2. The other top 10 ranked groups include: Men’s 100m (No. 10 – 10.30 average), women’s steeplechase (No. 4 – 10:19.87 average), women’s hammer throw (No. 7 – 58.83m | 193-0) and the women’s 400m hurdles (No. 8 – 59.98 average).
