MEDLEY, Fla. — Unrivaled’s historic opening weekend came to an end Monday night with half the league feeling the vibes of undefeated starts, and the other half searching for answers. The Laces, Lunar Owls and Vinyl are 2-0, while the Mist, Phantom and Rose are 0-2 after the first set of games.Kayla McBride had 21 points, Tiffany Hayes added 16 points, and Alyssa Thomas provided the game-ending score in a 12-point, 15-rebound performance to help the Laces beat the Mist 63-43 in the final game Monday.Dearica Hamby had 22 points, Arike Ogunbowale added 21 points, and the Vinyl beat the Phantom 84-71 in the other matchup to close out Unrivaled’s opening weekend.Unrivaled returns to action Friday, but the feeling-out process for WNBA players participating in the new 3-on-3, full-court women’s basketball league will continue for the next eight weeks until the March 17 final.“I’m having a lot of fun,” said Hayes, a two-time NCAA champion at Connecticut and member of the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces.“I mean, I’ve had fun in other places, but this has just been a different type of thing. It just feels a lot more free than other places. It feels a lot like you’re allowed to make mistakes because it’s different. You get to feel it out.”League founders Napheesa Collier (2-0 with the Lunar Owls) and Breanna Stewart, who had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Mist on Monday, set out to create an alternative league for women’s basketball players. The opportunity to earn equity in the league along with a salary and play domestically in the WNBA offseason instead of traveling abroad were among the major selling points. The league also offers an opportunity for its young players, like Angel Reese and Rickea Jackson – first-round picks in the 2024 WNBA draft – a chance to improve their games before their second WNBA season.“I feel like it’s been pretty cool to be in my first year in the league and then having something like Unrivaled to just sharpen my bag and on both ends of the floor and continue to grow during our offseason,” Jackson said after a losing effort with the Mist.“Just staying in the gym and practicing with these great players each and every day is only going to make me better. It’s been a pretty cool experience.”Along with the players, the game has been an adjustment for the referees calling the games – with the players and coaches surely venting their frustrations. The Phantom were called for 16 fouls in the first game Monday, compared to just seven fouls for the Vinyl.Sabrina Ionescu got off the bench to cheer when the Vinyl were penalized with their sixth foul called just before the end of the third quarter.“Unfortunately, I think we’re all navigating. It’s all new,” said Phantom coach Adam Harrington, a former six-year assistant with the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets.“They’re (refereeing) three-on-three in the full court for the first time, seeing how intense and fast-paced it is. It’s an adjustment for us. Unfortunately, we were on the other end of it tonight.”Aces coach Becky Hammon, Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler and former NFL receiver Brandon Marshall were among those in attendance Monday night.Check out these highlights from Monday’s games: Final score: Laces topple Mist 63-43 to close opening weekendKayla McBride had 21 points, Tiffany Hayes added 16 points, and Alyssa Thomas scored the game-winning put-back basket off her 15th rebound to help the Laces win 63-43.League founder Breanna Stewart finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Mist. The Laces are 2-0 after the opening weekend, while the Mist fell to 0-2.
