DAISETTA, Texas — A varsity basketball game between Hull-Daisetta High School and Burkeville High School was abruptly canceled Tuesday night after a brawl broke out at the end of the first quarter.
The game, held at Hull-Daisetta High School, was still in the first quarter of play with Hull-Daisetta leading 16-6 when the fight erupted. Video footage taken from the stands shows multiple students jumping onto the court, with some engaging in the altercation and others attempting to intervene. Coaches and several adults could also be seen trying to break up the melee.
Order was restored when administrators, coaches, and law enforcement intervened to clear the gymnasium floor, according to Bartram. Officials then cancelled the game and directed Burkeville players and spectators to exit the facility while Hull-Daisetta fans were asked to remain in place.
“Unfortunately, we had an incident that occurred at the basketball game last night and we regret that we had any individuals involved in that. It is under investigation,” said Burkeville ISD Superintendent Gordon Thomas.
The video captured at least one adult woman actively participating in the fight, seen throwing at least a dozen blows during the chaos. While some attempted to restore order, the disorder escalated as more individuals became involved.
