BROOKINGS S.D. – The Augustana track and field squads for both men and women experienced a remarkable start to their season as they participated at SDSU and in Boston, boasting a school record, a new collegiate record, and several provisional qualifying times.
SDSU HOLIDAY CLASSIC
The Vikings garnered numerous top-five results during the two-day event in Brookings, capped off by an impressive school record achievement.
Andrew Martens achieved the fastest preliminary time and secured the only event victory for the Vikings, triumphing in the men’s 60-meter hurdle final with a time of 7.89, just .01 shy of his personal best.
Nyanas Kur surged to third place overall in the women’s 300-meter dash, setting a new personal record of 39.74, which surpassed the former school record by more than a second.
Trent DeCook finished fourth in the men’s 300-meter dash with a personal best of 34.68, now ranking him second in Augustana’s history, while in the men’s 400-meter dash, Jude Jarding clocked a time of 50.00 flat for a fourth-place finish overall.
Kadin Groen placed third and Daniel Street came in fifth in the men’s 5000-meter run, finishing with times of 15:08.96 and 15:22.08, respectively.
Jayda Becker and Ashton Massey each secured fifth-place spots in their field events, as Becker recorded a jump of 17-06.25 in the long jump and Massey achieved 34-09.75 in the triple jump.
A women’s 4×400-meter relay squad finished fourth with a time of 3:55.81, featuring Maia Peterson, Kur, Becker, and Ella Heinitz leading the charge.
In the only event held on Saturday, Peterson dominated the women’s pentathlon, achieving a personal record of 3610 points, now ranking her fourth on Augustana’s all-time list. Kylee Sallee followed closely in second place with 3509 points, and Massey secured eighth place with 2761 points in her debut representing the Vikings.
SHARON COLYEAR-DANVILLE SEASON OPENER
Ryan Hartman and Ella Bakken made the journey to Boston University, each participating in the 5,000-meter run. Bakken clocked in at 16:55.40—a personal best that currently serves as a provisional qualifying time—for 115th place in a competitive field.
Hartman continued to make history, breaking his own South Dakota collegiate record in the 5k with a time of 13:46.54. This time is not only a provisional qualifying standard, it also surpasses his previous personal best by over seven seconds, earning him 70th place out of a field exceeding 200 athletes.
