CHICAGO, Ill. — North Park Baseball split a doubleheader against Wheaton College on Saturday, the Vikings’ final home doubleheader of 2025. NPU dropped game one, 3-2, before the bats came to life in game two with a 11-2 win.
Game One: Wheaton 3, North Park 2
Another quality start for NPU junior right hander Jackson Nuese fell by the wayside as Wheaton’s Jared Kloth enjoyed a complete-game win for the Thunder. Nuese allowed just one earned run and only three hits in his 6.1 innings pitched, which is normally enough for the win.

However, Kloth went all nine and scattered seven hits, punching out four Vikings.
The Thunder scored in the second on an RBI single from Daniel Hillyer before Viking designated hitter Nate Sommerfeld drove a two-strike double to right-center to tie the game in the fourth. The Thunder’s Noah Yi cracked an RBI double in the fifth before Viking pinch hitter Rylan Li tied the game once more with a sac fly in the seventh. Wheaton got the final run of the game in the eighth on a fielder’s choice groundout.
One of the highlights of game one was junior right fielder Joe Perona‘s 9-3 in a single through the right side.
Game Two: North Park 11, Wheaton 2
The Thunder had a two-out burst in their first trip to the plate on an RBI single and RBI triple, to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Vikings got both runs back in the bottom of the first when freshman left fielder Vinnie Marvucic singled in Reyn Matsuzaki and Perona on a two-run single to left. It would be all Vikings after that. DiVito, Matsuzaki, and Vertucci all had RBI singles in the second and one of the biggest swings of the game would be Sommerfeld’s double off the top of the right-center field wall, plating Rylan Kawakami and Marvucic.
In the seventh, Kawakami and DiVito collaborated on a double steal – Kawakami second and DiVito home – before the final run of the game was scored on freshman Taylor Joseph’s ground-rule double into right field.
On the mound, Brandon Leidolph weathered that two-out blitz in the first inning to end his day with five strikeouts in six innings pitched to earn the win. Senior lefty Brett Ravitz came in for near perfect relief, collecting the save in three innings while striking out a pair of Thunder batters.
