Volleyball Defeats UMBC in Four

WASHINGTON- GW volleyball earned a swift victory on Friday evening, defeating UMBC, 3-1, in its first of three weekend matches. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

·      The Buff & Blue jumped ahead early, swinging for 17 kills behind a .343 hitting percentage in the first to claim the set, 25-21. 

·      The Retrievers made a comeback in the second, tying the score six times and forcing three lead changes. Ultimately, it was the visiting UMBC who stole the second, 25-22. 

·      GW once again claimed the momentum in the third to inch out to a 25-18 victory over the Retrievers. 

·      In the fourth and final frame of the night, the match narrowed once again with UMBC putting pressure on the home team. Outhitting the visitors, 16-13, GW was able to claim the match, 3-1, in a 25-19 set victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

·      Taylor Treahy led the team on the attack, swinging for 19 kills behind a .410 hitting percentage. Treahy also earned five blocks at the net to lead the Buff & Blue. 

·      Cianna Tejada and Cayla Cogan also chipped into GW’s offensive efficiency, each adding 14 kills apiece, marking a new career-high for both attackers. 

·      Setter Abby Markworth fed the attackers with 50 assists and three kills of her own. 

·      Lydia Zeng paced the defense with 16 kills. 

·      As a team, the Buff & Blue put down 64 kills across the evening for a .276 hitting percentage. 

The Buff & Blue will return to action in the Smith Center tomorrow, taking on the Loyola Greyhounds at 4 p.m. The match will not be streamed, and fans are encouraged to follow GWSports.com for the latest news on the GW Revs.
