Volleyball Releases 2025 Schedule with Yearly Wheeling Invitational Kicking off Home Slate

Wheeling, W. Va. – Last season, the Wheeling University Volleyball team made it to the 2024 Atlantic Regional Championship match against Gannon. After watching their group of nine seniors walk across the stage at graduation, the Cardinals will have a lot of new faces in 2025 as they look to be back in the Regional Tournament mix. On Thursday, the team released their 2025 schedule, with the annual Wheeling Invitational Kicking off a heavy home slate through late September and into October.  

The 2024 season was another successful year for the Cardinals, that saw them go 27-11 overall and 12-2 through their Mountain East Conference (MEC) schedule. As they do every season, the Cardinals kicked things off against the best of the best in the country to prepare them for postseason play. They would pick up wins against Spring Hill College and the University of Central Missouri, before sweeping their first five home matches, including a 4-0 mark during the Wheeling Invitational. After dropping their conference opener to West Virginia State, the Cardinals would go 12-2 in conference play and earned the #1 seed in the North Division. They would advance to the MEC Championship game , where they fell to West Virginia State. The then made it to the NCAA Regional Championships, where they battled in four sets against Gannon before falling 3-1. 

After seeing nine seniors walk across the stage on Saturday, the Cardinals will have a new look team for the 2025 season, but the same goal of battling the best of the best. They begin their season in Pensacola, Florida where they will take on Northern Michigan, West Florida, Spring Hill College, and Southwest Minnesota State in the West Florida Tournament. They will then head to Grand Valley State the following weekend to face more ranked opponents. They open the tournament with Hillsdale and follow up with matches against Grand Valley State and Tiffin. The Tournament schedule wraps up with the annual Wheeling Invitational, running September 18th through the 20th. It’s a rematch of the 2024 NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship match on Thursday against Gannon. The final two days will see the Cardinals battle Shippensburg, CAL-U, and Clarion to round out the tournament. 

The Cardinals will hit the road to start conference play against West Virginia State on September 26th, and add a road contest against Fairmont State to round out the month. October will be a heavy home month for the Cardinals, with the team playing six home matches during the month. They start the month against Point Park and will be home for the next three weekends, with Salem, West Virginia Wesleyan, and Davis & Elkins all making their way to Wheeling. After a three-match road trip from October 21st to 25th against Ursuline, Concord, and Glenville State. The month ends with back-to-back home matches against Fairmont State and Charleston in a special Halloween Night match. 

The Cardinals will open November the same way they closed October, inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center. They start their final MEC North Division push as they face Frostburg State on November 4th. They will go on the road to face Point Park on November 7th, followed by Salem on November 11th, before they come home to round out the regular season. They will take on West Liberty in a special senior night match-up as they bring their rivals to the Alma Grace McDonough Center. The Postseason will then begin the following week, with the MEC Volleyball Tournament running November 20th – 22nd.
