Year 43 of the Seaside Beach Volleyball Tournament begins Thursday on the Oregon Coast. The event runs from Thursday, Aug. 7 to Sunday, Aug. 10.
With over 230 nets and more than 600 teams on the waiting list, 2025 is going to be the biggest tournament ever. Seaside beach will trade in chairs, umbrellas and towels for music, spectators and four days of volleyball. The event will see players ranging in age from 12 to 80.
Tournament organizer Sadie Mercer, of the Seaside Chamber of Commerce, said much of her time since March has been dedicated towards planning the tournament. She is excited about the increase in participation and hopes that it keeps expanding every year and will grow to include countries outside of the U.S.
“Even though we are the largest tournament in the United States, we don’t see a lot of international participation,” Mercer said. “We hope that will eventually change, as it will only add more competition.”
Last year’s winners showed the diversity of athletes the summer tournament attracts. The winners on the girls side were Ensley Alden and Taylor Hagenah from Los Angeles, California while the male victors were professional volleyball players Hagen Smith and Logan Webber, who are from California and Michigan respectively. The prize money for winning was $5,000.
Due to Seaside’s mild climate, hospitality and lively town atmosphere, families and players get the opportunity to enjoy all the perks of the Oregon Coast.
“A lot of people have discovered the Oregon coast through (the Seaside) Beach Volleyball Tournament,” Mercer said. “Families travel from all over the United States for this event.”
For those who want to head down to the beach for the weekend event, admission is free and registration for players varies based on division. Thursday’s action starts at 9 a.m. with the Junior Players Meeting and National Anthem; games begin at 10 a.m. Friday’s schedule begins at 7:45 a.m., while Saturday and Sunday action starts at 8 a.m.
