SPOKANE, Wash. — The regional rivalry between Big Sky and soon-to-be Pac-12 will continue for the next three years, according to press releases from the two universities.
The Cougars and Eagles will face off for the first of three meetings on Dec. 17. The two schools played in the Spokane Arena last season, with WSU winning 96-81.
“We’re excited to participate in the 509 Classic and bring Cougar basketball to Spokane again,” Coach Riley said. “We’ve said we want to play everyone in Washington, and this event gives the Cougs and the Eagles a chance to continue a historic series that dates back over 100 years.”
The game is another reunion for head coach David Riley, who spent three years coaching EWU before moving an hour south to coach the Cougars. The Cougars have only lost twice to Eastern Washington in the last 10 meetings, although both of the losses were to David Riley when he coached for Eastern.
The Eagles finished last year eighth in the Big Sky with a 6-12 record and finished 10-22 on the season as a whole in the first year under new head coach Dan Monson. Monson will look to improve upon his first year after losing his top scorers to the transfer portal.
“We’re thrilled to bring Eastern basketball to Spokane for the 509 Classic. This is more than just a game — it’s a chance to showcase our program and engage our passionate fan base, along with over 45,000 EWU alumni living in the heart of the Inland Northwest, as we build a tradition that celebrates everything Eastern Washington represents. We’re excited to compete and be part of something that will energize the entire region,” Monson said.
The first edition of this game will be Dec. 17, with more details announced soon on 509Classic.com
