The boys hadn’t been on a surf trip together since 1985. Dire Straits was on the Walkman as they went walkabout in Western Australia. Two of surfing’s most iconic style masters, Brad Gerlach and Mark Occhilupo, just coming into their own and taking on the world.

“How good is it to just still be surfing? These golden years,” smiles Occy on Gerr’s new podcast via his Wave Ki Dojo.

“I feel like you really gotta keep surfing as much as you can at this time in your life…just as must as you can, and I’ve been doing that,” he adds.

Thirty-nine years later, the two sat down for a jam session in the Maldives to catch up, talk technique, and breakdown Occy’s formidable approach through the lens of Wave Ki, Gerr’s martial arts-inspired study of surfing. And what you get is 32-minutes of instruction that will change the way you surf forever. At the very least it will unlock the subtle secrets that make Occy Occy.

From head position, to how to lead with the lower half and what the hell to do with your arms, you’ve absolutely never seen Occy’s surfing so dissected in such fine, expert detail. Gerr restrained himself and didn’t break out his Occy impression, but they do make a quiet nod to if if you pay attention.

“The fact of the business is,” as Lightin’ Hopkins would say, you want to help your surfing, watch this video. It’s endlessly fascinating and will undoubtedly do your cutback a world of good.
