MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine men’s volleyball team opened up the 2025 season in Firestone Fieldhouse tonight, sweeping Missouri S&T. The Waves posted 25-12, 25-19, and 25-7 set scores against the Miners, while also keeping them to a negative hitting percentage in the third set. The Waves hit an impressive .472, with Ryan Barnett leading the attack with 11 kills along with three service aces. Freshman Cole Hartke had a strong Pepperdine debut, totaling seven kills on 12 attempts while also adding six digs, three blocks, two assists, and one service ace. Ethan Watson was the lead for the Malibu Roofing Co. tonight, sharing four blocks and tabbing seven kills on a .700 clip. Gabe Dyer led the playmaking, totaling 19 assists, along with four kills and an ace. James Eadie hit a .625%, tabbing six kills, two blocks, and an assist.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
Two back-to-back blocks from a combined James Eadie and Ryan Barnett opened up the match for Pepperdine. A service ace from Barnett continued momentum while freshman Cole Hartke had a major kill to extend the Waves’ lead to 6-2. Setter Gabe Dyer dumped two in a row over the net to further Pepperdine’s lead 11-4. A block from Matt Mazur and Ethan Watson made the score 20-10 in favor of Pepp. James Eadie closed out set one with a kill to make the score 25-12. The Waves kept the Miners to a .000 hitting percentage in the first set, only allowing six kills.
Hartke and Watson combined on a block to open set two, followed up by Barnett connecting on an over-play to deliver two kills – while also adding an ace to extend the lead to 12-7. The Miners’ defensive efforts were strong in set two, with three blocks at the beginning of the set to bring them within three. With Missouri S&T within two, Ryan Barnett delivered a kill followed by a solo block from Eadie. A kill from Watson sent the Waves to set point at 24-19, where Gabe Dyer finished with a dump over the net to put Pepperdine up 2-0 in the match.
Barnett had the opening kill of set three, followed up by Eadie finding an open spot on the floor for two points. Watson connected with Hartke and Illay Haver for two blocks in a row, and a smash from Haver gave the Waves a 10-point advantage at 12-2. Mazur also dropped another kill that the Miners couldn’t grab, extending Pepperdine’s advantage to 19-5. Two Asics Aces in a row from Haver forced Missouri S&T to a timeout, keeping the Miners to only five points with the Waves at 21. An ace from Watson led Pepperdine to match point, which Missouri S&T ultimately finished with an attack error. The Waves kept the Miners to a -.087 hitting percentage while also only allowing seven points throughout the set.
