What Unusual Sports Are Popular in 2025? – Landon Buford.com

In the otherwise offbeat world of weird sports of 2025, everyone’s still obsessed with football and basketball (yawn!), while these crazy ones are actually working over the underground scene. And honestly, some of these certainly top the boredom of a 3-hour-long baseball game.

Padel Is Taking Over (Sorry, Tennis)

First and foremost – in comes Padel. Padel is to tennis and squash as a child to a parent.  In Europe, the local equivalent to pickleball is padel, which is growing extremely fast. You play on a smaller court with walls that can be used in play; these aspects pave the way for amazing rallies, and spectacular jinxes from the Premier Padel Tour are getting quite a bit of regional attention.

More amazing stuff? An even newer game called Padel Smash is basically portable Padel meets Spikeball. The two-person company shot to fame on Shark Tank in 2023 when it raised $250,000. Just a little over a year later, the company is worth $3 million. Not bad for a sport that sounds like it was invented during a drunk brainstorming session.

Death Diving (Because Regular Diving is Too Safe)

Death diving, for instance, so terrible it is truly a sport, is another terrifying instance. Yes, a Norway invention (of course). The divers jump off a platform 10 meters high, spending as much time in a particular pose before entering the water tucked in. Try to look like they will do a belly flop from about a nanosecond to eternity before backing out at the last second. Pure spectacle, but definitely not for persons who treasure their internal properties.

Chess Boxing: For When You Can’t Decide Between Brain or Brawn

It is pretty much exactly as its name states. The players take turns between a round of chess and one of boxing. The winner is declared after someone either achieves a checkmate or knocks the other person out. I’m telling you! Somebody actually thought, “chess would be better with punching.” And it is catching on! There is strangely great appeal in watching somebody trying to think three moves ahead while adjusting to a black eye.

Underwater Hockey (Hold Your Breath!)

Remember gym class hockey? Well, this is that, minus the gym part and the holding one breath at the bottom of a pool part. This weird sport is six versus six with no goaltenders, played in a swimming pool. A weighted puck is used, which is placed at the bottom of the pool. The kicker: players must hold their breath underwater and occasionally come up to the surface to breathe. Imagine just regular hockey but with the thrill of maybe getting drowned!

Bossaball: Volleyball, Trampolines Chaos

My personal favorite!! Bossaball is a crazy sport that mixes volleyball with football (soccer), gymnastics, and capoeira. It is played on an inflatable court with an inflatable net. On either side of the net is a small inflatable trampoline. So, backflips while spiking a volleyball—what could go wrong?

The Rise of Phygital Sports

Here is where things go truly in 2025. A whole new category of sports is booming, called “phygital”  sports- physical meet digital for those not fluent in start-up speak- Think racing simulators that have come so close to real that many argue shoes with thin and flexible soles are a necessity- their thin and flexible soles help maximize the driver’s feel of the petals and give them well control not less. People are buying special shoes to play better at video games. Peak 2025 is here now, peeps!

Extreme Ironing (Yes, Really)

I saved the weirdest for last. Extreme ironing is done in dangerous locations—the sides of mountains, in the sea, in the forest, etc. There are also rules: the participants must use ironing boards with a specified length, and the irons must be made of real iron. At a minimum, one has to use a tea towel for the size of the garment. Somebody looked at ironing and thought: this mundane household chore needs more DANGER.

Why Are We Like This?

Look, I think the explosion of weird sporting events in 2025 says something about our society. Maybe we are bored with traditional sports. Or maybe, social media has transformed us all into attention-seekers who crave ever more bizarre activities to go viral. Or maybe-just maybe-humans have always been weird, and now we finally have the platforms to share our weirdness with the world.

Whatever the reason, the 2025 World Games for non-Olympic disciplines and events will be staged in Chengdu, China, thus putting the bizarre sports into legitimate worldwide recognition. So next time a well-meaning friend tries to get you to join their amateur softball league, suggest underwater hockey. You’re going to have some good stories to tell.

Note: The author takes no responsibility for any injuries sustained while attempting death diving, extreme ironing, or trying to explain chess boxing to your grandmother.

Tonal’s new Daily Lift feature is exciting, but its sophistication could spell bad news for personal trainers

Tonal has unveiled “Daily Lift,” a new artificial intelligence feature that creates personalized, daily strength training workouts for users.

Announced Wednesday, Daily Lift uses AI to analyze factors including a Tonal user’s recent workouts, their performance in those workouts and fatigue levels, while taking personal fitness goals and preferences into account.

The end result, Tonal says, is the perfect strength training workout. Users can tweak suggested Daily Lift workouts to alter program length, change muscle region focus or substitute specific exercises.

The launch of Daily Lift marks a potentially significant moment in the fitness industry’s growing embrace of artificial intelligence. While AI-generated workouts are nothing new, they’re often slammed for being overly cookie-cutter and too generic for hardcore fitness enthusiasts.

Daily Lift is much more personalized and robust, Tonal says, since it’s built on a user’s own workout history on their Tonal machine, along with reams of strength training data (Tonal’s new digital strength training machine, the Tonal 2, uses a camera to analyze 500 data points per second).

“Daily Lift isn’t just another AI-generated workout,” Tonal chief product and content officer Jonathan Shottan told Athletech News. “It’s built on Tonal Intelligence, a proprietary system that harnesses deep insights from your unique training data together with proven performance science principles to deliver the most personalized, effective workout out there.”

Fitness executives have mostly stated that AI won’t replace human personal trainers any time soon, although the launch of a product like Daily Lift could give them second thoughts.

While Tonal didn’t necessarily create the feature to get rid of fitness professionals (the brand itself still employs coaches), Shottan did say that Daily Lift is designed to replicate “what a top-tier personal trainer would do — automatically, daily and at scale for all of our members to enjoy.”

“Daily Lift marks the beginning of a more adaptive coaching layer within Tonal Intelligence – one that evolves with you, like a personal trainer, to meet your evolving needs and training style,” he added. “Over time, this intelligence will continue to deepen across the Tonal ecosystem, reinforcing the performance feedback loop that drives individual progress.”

Tonal plans to continue investing in artificial intelligence and other tech tools, Shottan confirmed to ATN.

“We will also continue to invest in world-class AI talent, tools and technology as a tool in our toolkit to further push the boundaries of what’s possible with Tonal Intelligence,” he said.

Clippers’ Intuit Dome Redefines Fan Engagement With Tech and Sustainability Innovations

Halo Sports & Entertainment CEO Gillian Zucker is redefining fan engagement through a blend of cutting-edge technology and immersive experiences, as highlighted in a recent Fortune Leadership Next podcast. Zucker, who also serves as president of business operations for the Los Angeles Clippers, detailed how the team’s new Intuit Dome integrates hardware and software to create a dynamic environment. The venue’s “Halo board”—a two-sided, acre-sized LED scoreboard—features interactive elements, 3D graphics, and real-time crowd engagement tools. Zucker emphasized the goal of “making people’s jaws drop” by leveraging innovations such as decibel tracking, which identifies the loudest fans to reward them with upgrades or surprises. The facility also employs facial recognition and frictionless tech, including “Game Face ID,” which allows fans to enter the venue and access concessions seamlessly [1].

Zucker’s leadership under Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has transformed the organization’s approach to fan interaction and operational efficiency. The team’s focus on data-driven personalization extends to concessions, with 31 kitchens strategically placed to minimize wait times and ensure fresh food delivery. Real-time analytics guide menu adjustments, as seen when Steve Ballmer’s preferred grilled chicken Caesar salad was replaced after low fan demand [1]. Beyond technology, Zucker highlighted the importance of creating emotional connections, such as displaying 1,500 high school basketball jerseys on “The Wall,” a gesture that celebrates local sports culture [1].

The Intuit Dome’s design prioritizes eliminating friction in every aspect of the fan experience. Zucker cited examples like “Loud Cups,” which double as noisemakers to amplify crowd energy, and a standing-room-only section for dedicated fans. The team also leverages AI and machine learning to optimize operations, from reducing line wait times to analyzing fan behavior to refine events. Zucker noted that the venue’s architecture, including a solar-powered roof capable of powering an NBA Finals game off-grid, reflects a commitment to sustainability [1].

Zucker’s career path underscores the value of diverse experience in sports management. Starting in PR and sales, she transitioned to stadium operations in minor league baseball, gradually building expertise in licensing and broadcasting. Her strategy for attracting talent emphasizes curiosity, empathy, and adaptability over traditional sports fandom, as passion often develops organically among employees. Zucker credited Ballmer’s leadership style—focusing on simplicity, clarity, and iterative problem-solving—for fostering a culture of innovation [1].

The team’s impact extends beyond basketball, with the renovated Kia Forum serving as a model for concert acoustics and events. Zucker also highlighted the growing importance of women’s sports, citing partnerships with organizations like WWE to showcase female athletes. With the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, the Intuit Dome will host basketball events, further solidifying its role as a global sports hub. Zucker emphasized the venue’s flexibility, including 51 rows of seating and 100 locker rooms, to accommodate international competitions [1].

Zucker’s approach balances technological ambition with community engagement. Initiatives like charter flights for loyal fans to playoff games in Denver exemplify her focus on creating memorable, shareable experiences. She also addressed challenges in public perception, advocating for greater understanding of sports economics, such as the NBA’s salary cap. Despite polarized opinions online, Zucker views social listening as a tool to bridge gaps between organizations and fans [1].

The integration of sustainability efforts, from waste reduction to water reclamation, reflects the team’s broader commitment to social responsibility. Zucker stressed that leading by example—rather than imposing mandates—is key to inspiring fan participation. As the sports industry evolves, she sees the NBA’s globalization and the 2028 Olympics as pivotal opportunities to amplify the Clippers’ influence [1].

MLS continues to seek breakthrough for annual All-Star Game

The MLS All-Star Game, which takes place tonight in Austin, is “caught in the same wake of change” that has enveloped other All-Star games, which are at a “cross-sport crossroads,” according to Ryan Tolmich of GOAL. MLS believes its All-Star Game “goes up,” but to get there, MLS “has to avoid the fate of other leagues in America, where once-cherished events have lost their grip on sports relevancy.” From its inception, MLS has “looked to balance the tradition of European soccer, the culture of American sports and the fun needed to help the league thrive.” Since 2021, “save for a clash” with Arsenal in 2023, the league has “gone with a new format, one that pits the best of MLS against the best of Liga MX.” The Skills Challenge has created some viral moments and “still carries those principles into the soccer landscape.” MLS has already confirmed its plans for the 2026 All-Star Game, which will head to Charlotte FC’s Bank of America Stadium. After playing “most of the recent editions in smaller soccer-specific stadiums, the league is looking to pack an NFL venue in the summer of 2026.” MLS is “looking to turn the All-Star Game” into more of a “multi-day event.” The state of North Carolina provided a $2M grant to “bring the game to Charlotte” as part of a week-long series of events focused on All-Star festivities. The 2026 FIFA World Cup “will be the ultimate lead-in for All-Star excitement, the league hopes, and MLS is looking to ride that wave to make the All-Star Game more of a moment” (GOAL, 7/21).

BANDING TOGETHER: USA TODAY’s Jason Anderson notes MLS and Liga MX have both been “comfortable enough over the idea of working together that chatter over a possible merger has bubbled up from time to time.” While “concrete steps haven’t been taken,” the two leagues have “looked at various ways to work together.” The Leagues Cup is the “most concrete current example,” with the two organizations using that competition to introduce Lionel Messi as an Inter Miami player in 2023. The leagues are “very likely going to keep seeking ways to increase their connections” (USA TODAY, 7/23).

MESSI EFFECT: GOAL’s Tom Hindle wrote Messi’s first MLS All-Star Game — if he plays — would be “hugely significant.” Hindle: “This is not a case of ‘MLS All Stars are coming to town!’ it’s a case of ‘Messi is coming to town.’ The impact he has on any sports market is huge, and this will be no different.” GOAL’s Jacob Schneider noted Messi’s possible appearance would “be momentous for MLS.” It is a “moment in which he will truly represent the badge of MLS, not just Inter Miami.” Tolmich wrote it is “extremely significant because, truthfully,” Messi is the “only reason some people are going to watch.” Tolmich: “It’s not exactly a secret, but Messi is bigger than any All-Star Game, and his presence on the field gives it value and legitimizes the event” (GOAL, 7/21). The league announced that Messi “will not play” in the game (YAHOO SPORTS, 7/23).

SHOWING OFF NEW GEAR: SPORTPRO’s Steve McCaskill wrote the MLS All-Star Game is not “just an annual gathering of the US soccer community.” It is “increasingly a technological showcase” for the league, which sees “digital innovation as key to its plans to expand audiences both at home and around the world — especially given its relatively young, diverse fanbase.” In the leadup to the main event, MLS staged its “‘Future of the Game’ showcase, providing real time, in-game demonstrations of technologies the league believes can help it achieve its sporting and commercial ambitions.” Many of these companies have been “involved with the league’s sports technology” accelerator and MLS Innovation Lab. MLS has a “unique ability to combine elements” from both the soccer world and North American sport. It is a highly “centralised organisation,” which allows it to “directly influence technology strategies at its member clubs, unlike its European rivals.” The result is a “unique testbed” for sports technology, especially for companies “eager to crack the soccer market” (SPORTPRO, 7/22).

MLS released a video highlighting the past several days in Austin ahead of tonight’s All-Star Game.

(ET, ) – It was the most watched episode in Shark Tank history when sisters Anna and Samantha Martin won over the Shark Tank panel.

Never before had the judging panel unanimously decided to each invest millions of dollars into a potential company.

After buying a staggering 25% share in the sisters’ company, the Shark Tank panel have personally mentored the pair, helping them undergo re-branding and re-packing of their miracle product.

Touting their discovery as “the greatest step forward in weight-loss history,” the judges were quick to offer up their hard earned cash to back the entrepreneurial pair.

“We were shocked. The most we were hoping for was some advice…we weren’t even sure that we would manage to get any investors,” explained Samantha.

After outstanding offers from each panel member, the sisters burst into tears.

“It didn’t feel real. The fact that all these successful, business-minded people wanted to be a part of what we were doing and willing to invest their own money, it was very emotional!” explained Anna.

The pair are the first contestants in the show’s long duration to ever receive a standing ovation and offers of investment from all panel members. The sisters said they celebrated the success with champagne and cake when the episode wrapped.

The sisters were the first contestants in Shark Tank history to receive investment offers from all five panel members.

Since filming the show-stopping episode, the sisters have been hard at work putting the advice of their mentors into play.

“We completely re-branded our company and came up with new packaging,” said Anna.

The pair recently unveiled the product that netted them millions of dollars in investments.

“The product we displayed on the show has been rebranded into . It’s the original formula, all we’ve done is change the name and the packaging,” explained Samantha.

The sisters launched the product for sale through their company website and say they sold out within 5 minutes.

“We even made sure we had more product than we thought we could sell, but all of it sold out within five minutes!” exclaimed Samantha.
