Here’s What’s Happening in Davidson County: A local city recently made a short list of charming places to retire in N.C., and an upcoming golf tournament will help local children play sports.
Thomasville named charming place to retire
North Carolina has 553 incorporated cities, towns and villages, and from among them one Davidson County city recently made the list of “8 Charming North Carolina Communities to Retire Around Charlotte.”
Thomasville, otherwise known as the Chair City, made that short list compiled by WorldAtlas.com, an educational website launched in 1994.
“Thomasville is a peaceful town with quick access to High Point, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Lexington,” the write up reads. “With Charlotte within about an hour’s drive, a retiree here is minutes away from all manner of big-city amenities. For example, the highly-rated Forsyth Medical Center is just down the road in Winston-Salem and known for world-class medical care.”
The write up notes some of the amenities in Thomasville, such as the Winding Creek Golf Club municipal course and Lake Thom-A-Lex Park, where people can fish and enjoy other aquatic activities.
“Moreover, there is a decent number of parks in town, several lakes in the area and the Thomasville Aquatics and Community Center for lap swims and fitness classes,” the write up continues. “The best part? The median listing home price in Thomasville is just around $250K.”
Thomasville City Manager Michael Brandt said he was delighted that Thomasville is getting this recognition.
“We are quite happy to be added to a list for retirees,” he said. “We know we have a great community, and we really appreciate that someone has recognized it.”
Other cities making the list are Pineville, Hickory, Mount Holly, Salisbury, Statesville, Lincolnton and Kings Mountain.
Golf tournament seeks to level the playing field
Golf For Goals will take place on Oct. 27 at Colonial Country Club in Thomasvillem and seeks to raise funds to help every child have what they need to play youth sports.
Beyond Sports, the NC Fusion Foundation organizes Golf For Goals. This event will bring the community together for a day of golf, camaraderie, and giving back — all in support of ensuring every child has the opportunity to participate in sports, regardless of barriers they may face. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit Beyond Sports, an initiative focused on improving health, wellness and athletic equality for youth in the community.
“By participating in Golf For Goals, presented by Stifel, you’re not just enjoying a great round of golf — you’re helping create meaningful opportunities for young athletes,” said Mike Kennedy, co-founder of Beyond Sports, the NC Fusion Foundation. “Together, we can make sports more accessible and impact the next generation both on and off the field.”
The golf tournament will feature:
- A full round of golf
- On-course contests and prizes
- Cart, lunch and commemorative gift
- Opportunities for golfers and non-golfers alike to get involved
