From the first football kickoffs last August to the final outs of the baseball and softball seasons this June, fans around Grosse Pointe were thrilled by many great sports moments and performances during the 2024-25 school year. The Grosse Pointe News Athlete of the Year contest is a way to highlight several of those amazing student-athletes who gave their friends, families and the community moments to remember this past year. Now, the time has come for four of them to be honored.

This year’s winners include an All-State swimmer, a courageous softball captain, a former state-champion wrestler and the state’s top girls ice hockey talent.

The winners came from a group of 39 athletes from Grosse Pointe South, Grosse Pointe North and University Liggett School who were showcased individually in our Athlete of the Week features throughout the school year. These athletes were nominated by family, coaches and the Grosse Pointe News staff to highlight their strong performances, amazing leadership and incredible achievements in their respective sports.

Two winners, one male and one female athlete, were chosen by Grosse Pointe News readers, as the community made its voice heard with more than 5,000 votes cast over two weeks. An additional male and female athlete also were chosen as winners by the Grosse Pointe News staff in the editors’ choice category.

Each winner will receive a $500 scholarship courtesy of the Grosse Pointe News to put toward their respective college or university. Our Athlete of the Week sponsors from throughout the year also help make the scholarship possible.

This year’s sponsors include OASIS Heating & Cooling, Expert Heating & Cooling, Pointe Capital Management LLC and Shana Sine Cameron of Sine & Monaghan Realtors.
