PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team had cut the deficit to four points in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, but too many mistakes made the deficit insurmountable as Brown escaped with a 65-57 victory Friday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Quakers (10-9, 1-5 Ivy) have dropped three consecutive games and five of their last six while the Bears (10-9, 4-2 Ivy) take a two-game lead over Dartmouth and a three-game lead over Penn in fourth place after winning their third straight matchup.
Brown was paced by a pair of 20-point scorers in Alyssa Moreland, who scored 25 points with 18 rebounds, and Grace Arnolie’s 25-point performance.

Moreland and Arnolie had the Bears ahead 44-40 with 24 seconds to play in the third, but Gayle converted on a floating jumper as time expired to cut the deficit to two points heading into the final period.
Brown opened the fourth quarter on another 8-0 run to take a 52-42 lead, but Sawyer dwindled it back to single digits on a layup at 52-44 off the dish from Caldwell.
*Penn shot just 32.4 percent (22-for-68) from the field and 20 percent (7-for-35) from the three-point line in the defeat. On defense, the Quakers held the Bears to just 21.7 percent (5-for-23) from beyond-the-arc.
How It Happened
The Quakers won the opening tip and immediately found the basket after Mataya Gayle drilled a running layup underneath to take the early lead. Brown equalized, but Sarah Miller—making her first start in over a month—gave Penn back the lead on her first three-pointer of the evening.
Brown went on an 8-0 run of over six minutes before Mike McLaughlin called a timeout and reset the offense, to which the Quakers responded.
Abby Sharpe converted a four-point play from the corner to trim the deficit to one point before a Katie Collins steal at half-court got the ball to Stina Almqvist in transition. That resulted in a three-pointer at the top of the arc to hand Penn a 12-10 advantage.
