Boston, MA — The WPI men’s track and field team kicked off their 2024-25 season on Saturday afternoon with two 800 meter runners competing in the Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University’s Track & Tennis Center.
The pair of Brinson Wyche (Corvallis, MT) and Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) both took part in the middle heat of the three 800 meter events. Wyche set a strong pace and held the lead in the first half of the race until being overtaken by Kaleb Colson of Division I Maine during the third 200 meters. However, Colson’s lead was short-lived as Amherst’s Ben Davis surged ahead around the 500 meter mark, ultimately winning with a time of 1:52.92. Wyche fought back to reclaim second place while fending off a late challenge from Skerry. Wyche finished second with a time of 1:54.58, just ahead of Skerry, who clocked 1:54.64, finishing only 0.06 seconds later. Colson came in fourth at 1:55.36.
Jonah Hoey from the Adidas/Fast 8 Track Club recorded the day’s fastest time, winning heat one in 1:48.25. Olivier Desmeules of Division I Penn State placed as the top collegiate runner, finishing second with a time of 1:48.38. Maine’s Matt Firlings took heat three with a time of 1:58.52.
The complete Crimson and Gray men’s and women’s teams will compete again late next month as WPI commences the 2025 segment of its schedule on Saturday, January 25th, at the Lyons Invitational hosted by Wheaton. The events will start at 11am.
