LINCOLN, Neb. — Before fireworks light up the sky on the Fourth of July, families in Lincoln will have a chance to kick off the holiday with fun, fitness and a good cause.

Wright Park in Lincoln will transform from wide-open soccer fields into a sprawling obstacle course as the YMCA of Lincoln hosts its 13th annual Youth Sports Adventure Run. More than 220 runners, ranging in age from 5 to 60, are expected to lace up their shoes and take on the course, which includes challenges like slip-and-slides to help beat the summer heat.

The event is designed with kids in mind — the course is built for the average 7-year-old — but it features plenty of fun and difficulty to engage participants of all ages.

“It’s just a great way to kick off the Fourth of July,” YMCA of Lincoln Executive Director Todd Johnson said. “Everybody can participate together, and it’s a lot of fun for families.”

Proceeds from the Adventure Run support the YMCA’s annual Kids Campaign, which provides financial assistance for YMCA memberships and programs. The Young Men’s Christian Association, or YMCA, has served communities for more than a century, focusing on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

“We want everyone to be able to participate in youth sports, no matter their financial situation,” the Johson said. “That’s what this event helps support.”

Same-day registration is still available for those interested in joining the fun. Races begin at 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on the morning of July 4.

So before the barbecues and fireworks, Lincoln families can celebrate the holiday with teamwork, laughter and a run through the park — all for a good cause.
