Four YAIAA teams — the Red Lion and York High girls, plus the West York and Fairfield boys — are set to resume their seasons Thursday. A total of 15 squads are in action Friday, with 11 additional teams playing Saturday in addition to West York’s all-day marathon. The midseason date might look strange at first glance, but there was little room for an extra event during the postseason. Instead, this tournament will function much like the various showcases — it won’t count toward any teams’ records, but it will give all competing wrestlers a chance to face stiff competition they might not see anywhere else. Class 2A and 3A boys, for instance, will converge here before splitting up in February. The York-Adams League’s 2025 calendar begins with a brand-new marquee event during the first weekend of the year.

Each tournament will consist of brackets in 13 weight classes, with wrestling to four places. Action will be spread out across five mats at Central York’s gym until the final rounds, when finals and consolation matches are held on two mats apiece.A bevy of local grapplers are off to impressive starts, with 12 boys’ wrestlers winning individual titles at holiday tournaments last weekend alone. That list includes Bermudian Springs junior Hayden Yacoviello-Andrus, who is 13-0 this season while wrestling at 145 pounds. Northeastern senior Elijah Hewitt (17-2, primarily at 121) is the league’s wins leader this winter. He’s one of three YAIAA seniors with 100 wins overall, joining Littlestown’s Tanner Rock and Red Lion’s Mason Harvey.Rock is 16-1 this season. Kennard-Dale’s Michael Schmit (152) is 16-2, York Suburban’s Gehret Gentzyel (189) is 15-2 and Spring Grove’s Chase Amspacher (172) is 15-3. Delone Catholic sophomores Gavin Green and Caleb Tyler won District 3-2A titles last season and will get the chance to test themselves against a bevy of Class 3A wrestlers this weekend.York Suburban's Angela Imorhoa, top, won by 9-7 decision over Maya Landefeld of Central Dauphin in the 170-pound class at the PIAA District 3 girls' wrestling tournament at Penn Manor High School in Millersville on Saturday, March 2, 2024.The girls’ field is headlined by three reigning state medalists: York Suburban senior Angela Imorhoa (14-0 at 190) and junior Alysiana Price-Ierley (13-1, 112) and South Western senior Tatum Duckworth (12-0, 124). South Western freshman Claire Gobrecht is 12-0 at 106, although six of those wins have come via forfeit.Spring Grove’s Lilienne Yohe (14-5), Felicity Davis (14-6) and Ava Dietrich (14-6) are tied for the YAIAA wins lead. Dallastown’s Avery Baldwin and Kenna Hoffman both qualified for states in 2024, while Tessa Henise leads the Wildcats with a 12-2 record this season. The senior has only faced Imorhoa once in the 190-pound class, winning by pin in December 2023. Perhaps another showdown is imminent. The girls’ tournament in particular is a golden opportunity for wrestlers such as Dover’s Jahzari Abney, who does not regularly compete during the regular season with the Eagles not fielding a full team. While only seven programs play full Y-A schedules, wrestlers from 14 different schools are expected to compete this weekend.Official brackets were not available as of Thursday afternoon. Here’s a quick look at the rest of the upcoming local schedule.JOSEPH ‘SPIKE’ BAHN MEMORIAL SHOWCASENearly every January weekend will feature a jam-packed YAIAA basketball schedule, and 2025 starts with a signature event at West York. Eastern and L-S played a dramatic game last season. And Red Lion, which has a Thursday game at Hempfield, could be 12-0 when division play resumes next week.Last year’s event was threatened by weekend snowfall, forcing games to be moved up and/or to the middle school. Seven games took place, and York-Adams teams won them all. Eastern is back after postponing its contest last winter, while K-D replaces Susquehannock in the lineup.
