PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania’s head volleyball coach, Meredith Schamun, has announced her resignation from the position.

Schamun will be moving to the University of Illinois, where she will be Associate Head Coach for the Fighting Illini.

“I was not actively searching for a new coaching position; I was excited for the upcoming season and especially the direction the program is heading,” said Schamun. “However, an opportunity has come my way that I believe is the right choice for me at this point in my career. I am grateful to for the opportunity I have coming up, to coach in the Big Ten at the University of Illinois.

“I am so grateful for the support of Penn Athletics throughout my time in University City, especially the support these last few years from (director of athletics) Alanna Wren and (volleyball sport administrator) Rachel Kuperinsky,” she continued. “I am especially proud of the women in this incredible program and what we have worked so hard to build together. This program has made great strides the last few seasons, and I know that the best is still ahead for this group of women.”

“Meredith has set the foundation for the future success of Penn volleyball,” said Wren, the T. Gibbs Kane, Jr. W’69 Director of Athletics and Recreation. “This past fall was the best season in more than a decade thanks to Meredith’s commitment to building culture, success in recruiting, and coaching acumen. We are sad to see her leave Penn but wish her the best of luck at Illinois. We are focused on finding the next leader to continue the positive momentum within Penn volleyball.”

Penn enters the 2025 season with all seven starters returning from a team that went 13-10 overall last year and 7-7 in Ivy League play, more than tripling their win totals from 2023 both overall and in Ivy play. The group includes three players who have received All-Ivy accolades during their career: senior libero Abigail Reid, junior hitter Zada Sanger, and sophomore middle Adell Murray.

Beauty Brands Are Dropping the Ball on Women’s Sports

Women’s sports are undeniably on the rise. But according to Olympic track and field athlete and entrepreneur Allyson Felix, women’s sports marketing is still virtually nonexistent. Women’s sports are undeniably on the rise. But according to Olympic track and field athlete and entrepreneur Allyson Felix, women’s sports marketing is still virtually nonexistent.

Take a once-in-a-generation athlete like Caitlin Clark. “She gets a shoe deal, and it’s with Nike, and it’s the same shoe deal that Michael Jordan would have gotten 40 or 50 years ago,” said Wes Felix, cofounder of female athlete management firm Always Alpha and brother of Allyson Felix. “We need companies that only sell products to women to be involved in women’s sports.”

After her public break-up with Nike, outlined in a 2019 New York Times op-ed in which she shared that the shoemaker refused to pay her while on maternity leave, Felix broke the mold when she partnered with Athleta as the women’s athleisure brand’s first athlete sponsor.

“In track and field, you always have your shoe sponsor, and there’s only a handful of players in the game,” she said on stage at ADWEEK House in Cannes on Monday. “When we stepped away from Nike and we got the Athleta deal, it was like, ‘Oh, there’s another way to do this.’”

The Athleta deal led the way for the Gap-owned brand to partner with other female athletes like Katie Ledecky and Simone Biles. “When we did that deal, they had never worked with an athlete before,” Wes Felix said.

He said that Sephora’s recent move to sponsor the WNBA’s Golden State Valkyries is “what true sports marketing will look like.” But the beauty industry has been “exceptionally behind” in embracing what could be a huge opportunity.

“There are a lot of companies out there that only sell to women who should get involved in women’s sports,” he said.

For female athletes, the hardest part is opening the doors to have that conversation with a brand. “You’re most times educating that person on sports entirely,” Wes Felix said. “Because if you work at a beauty brand and you’re in partnerships, it’s not necessarily a sports world.”

Over a decade has passed since the last South Jersey High School Graduate won an NCAA Track and Field Championship. All together, there are 14 Men and Women from South Jersey who have won NCAA Titles.

Some of the most famous South Jersey High School Graduates who went on to win NCAA Track and Field Titles include:

-Don Bragg from Penns Grove (1960 Olympic Gold Medal Pole Vault)
-Carl Lewis from Willingboro (Nine Olympic Gold Medals)
-English Gardner from Eastern (2016 Olympic Gold Medal 400-meter relay)
-Nia Ali from Pleasantville (2016 Olympic Silver and 2019 World Champion Hurdles)

Now, for the first time since Curtis Thompson with Mississippi State in 2014 won the NCAA Track and Field Javelin Championship, a South Jersey High School Graduate has joined this esteemed group of athletes.

Pleasantville High School Graduate Overcomes Adversity To Win NCAA Title

At Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon was where Gabriel Moronta was aiming for multiple NCAA Track and Field Championships. But after he finished second in the 400-meter race, he was disqualified after officials said Moronta took two steps out of his lane.

The Pleasantville High School Graduate made up for the mistake in his next event, when his South Florida Team competed in the 4×400 Relay. Moronta was the anchor leg in the race, getting USF past Texas A&M to win the NCAA Championship.

A Criminology Major at South Florida, Gabriel Moronta holds the USF 400 Meter Dash and the 4×400 Relay school records. He has now received All-American Honors in back to back Track and Field seasons (Second Team – 2024; First Team – 2025).

Before attending Mississippi State and South Florida, Moronta was a two-time 800-meter New Jersey State Champion while at Pleasantville High School.  He was a finalist for the 2020 Cape-Atlantic Senior Athlete of the Year.

Gabriel Moronta is one of many great athletes who are from the state of New Jersey who went on to have athletic success after High School:
