5 More Under

A couple weeks ago, we checked in from the Arizona Complex League with a rundown of some under-the-radar players. Jose Anderson (Brewers) and Victor Figueroa (Padres) cracked the list after making early noise as two of the league’s top hitters. Just days later, both were promoted to Low-A.

Now, a new wave of hitters is stepping up—most of them unranked, but making strong cases ahead of Baseball America’s upcoming Top 30 updates.

Roldy Brito, 2B, Rockies

Perhaps the most polished hitter on the Rockies’ ACL squad, Brito turned heads during extended spring training, and he’s carried that momentum into the ACL.

Brito is batting .367, good for sixth in the league, and his 22 hits. He does a bit of everything at the plate, showing the ability to spray the ball all across the field. He’s not afraid to make adjustments, especially when he’s behind in the count.

A switch-hitter, Brito flashes line-drive power from the pull side and has room to add more strength as he grows into his 5-11, 183-pound frame. He’s currently playing second base, with experience at shortstop, but as of late has gotten some looks in center field.

Dauri Fernandez, SS, Guardians

If you’re looking for a textbook Guardians infield prospect, Fernandez fits it perfectly. He’s been the top hitter in the ACL, leading the league in batting average (.439), OBP (.522), slugging (.702), and OPS (1.224). He’s got 25 hits—10 of them for extra bases.

At the plate, the switch-hitter starts with a high leg kick, opening his front foot toward the mound before bringing it in to load. You might even catch him throwing in a Soto shuffle between pitches. Most of his power comes from the right side, but his bat-to-ball skills let him spray it around the field from both sides.

Devin Fitz-Gerald, SS, Rangers

Stoneman Douglas High School in South Florida has become a powerhouse for producing professional baseball talent—Jesús Luzardo, Anthony Rizzo and Roman Anthony, to name a few. Head coach Todd Fitz-Gerald leads the program. Now, his son, Devin, is adding his name to that impressive lineage, leading the ACL with five homers among active players.

The Rangers signed Fitz-Gerald for $900,000 after selecting him in the fifth round last July, luring him away from his commitment to NC State. While scouts were already sold on his refined bat-to-ball skills and advanced baseball instincts, there were lingering questions about how much more he could bring to the table. So far, Devin has answered those questions emphatically—displaying a mature approach at the plate, a balanced swing and growing power that indicates his game is evolving just as impressively as his pedigree would suggest.

Ching-Hsien Ko, OF, Dodgers

At 6-3, 215 pounds, Ko brings a physical presence to the batter’s box. Signed out of Taiwan last summer, he debuted in the DSL and is now making noise stateside, hitting .404 and driving in 13 runs.

The 18-year-old shows big power from the left side and has also proven he can hit for contact. His pullside pop stands out, but he can drive the ball the other way, too. He has good strike zone recognition and a balanced swing.

While he’s primarily been used in the outfield corners, Ko has the speed to handle center and a strong enough arm for right. He’s also shown a good feel for the strike zone—he walks almost as much as he strikes out—but he’ll jump on a pitch he likes.

Enyervert Perez, 3B, Diamondbacks

When Perez connects with the ball, the crack of the bat echoes throughout the complex. He hasn’t launched as many homers as other players on this list, but his raw power is some of the best in the ACL, especially for a 19-year-old.

On Wednesday, he recorded a pair of hits with exit velocities of 105 and 103 mph—the kind of pop that has the D-backs organization buzzing. His bat-to-ball skills are solid, though there’s room for refinement in his approach. He’s shown aggression early in counts, particularly on first-pitch fastballs, but is disciplined, walking as often as he strikes out.

Perez plays third now, but if he fills out further, first base could be in the cards. He is a candidate to slide into the D-backs Top 30 sooner rather than later.

Over the years, we’ve camped and Food Partied! in many unique places, encouraging readers to spend more time standing in awe with Mother Nature.

Travelin’ Solo – Elk and Mendocino County

Travelin’ Solo – Southwest and Colorado

Travelin’ Solo – Idaho Hot Springs and Yellowstone

Over those same years, we’ve also heard from readers who want nothing of it. “Laura – I don’t camp – what do you have for me?”

Well, how does a comfy mattress with electric blanket, coastal views, on-site sauna, morning yoga, and someone else cooking breakfast sound to you? Catch the last rays of summer or falls warmer coastal temperatures with a camp and glamp in the heart of Mendocino.

Perched just above the coast, we stumbled upon a spot made for those who crave the adventure of camping—only with a touch more comfort. The land itself carries whispers of a curious past, once a secret campground with a mission described as ‘adventurous and helpful.’ Intriguing, right? Eight years ago the land was re-imagined into Mendocino Grove. Picturesque open spaces greet towering trees, a fern-lined loop trail for hiking, nice bathrooms, community gathering spots and even a hot water wash for your pup. It’s camping, yes – but elevated. Platform tents with plenty of room and single or double beds accommodate couples, friends and families. Cool nights are easy under your fluffy comforter with wait for it – an adjustable heater! Everyone gets a picnic table and fire pit – ask the campfire valet to set it up (that’s what I am talkin’ about). Enjoy with house made s’mores.

What’s for dinner?

We took advantage of Mendocino Grove’s onsite gas grills and basket of (rentable) kitchen gear for a DIY dinner on The Overlook. Hello Pacific ocean.

The town of Mendocino is a 2-minute drive north. Don’t miss the natural foods store located in an old church, with a second larger grocer within walking distance. You can also shop at a farmers market, or buy fresh seafood off the Fort Bragg dock at Noyo Harbor. On special weekends, enjoy Friday Night Dinner hosted by the Grove and leave cooking to them.

Weekly Farmers Markets

Mendocino: Friday: 12:00 PM – 2:30 PM

Fort Bragg: Wednesday: 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM

A 10 minute walk from the property leads you to Catch a Canoe and Bicycles Too!, part of the neighboring Stanford Inn and Resort.

Located near the mouth of the picturesque Big River, explore this extensive waterway with different boating options including authentic redwood outriggers and carbon catamaran canoes. The highly trained staff recommended a 2-person kayak with pedals – first time for me and lucky for us, very helpful when afternoon winds kicked up. Weird movement at the start but my body got in groove quickly.

After a half day of take me to the river, we docked and walked back to the Grove for a sauna and on-site massage. Now will you come camping with me?

Mornings are fun. Grab a cup of local jo’ Thanksgiving coffee, hot chocolate on tap, or combine both into a Meadow Commons house specialty. Say hi to your neighbors and take a seat around the cozy fire.

It was homemade pastries and a hot oatmeal bar alongside steaming coffee and interesting conversations with people from all over the world. (It’s hard to take camping gear on a plane.) People were just hanging out and getting to know each other. Very chill and friendly. The fire flamed stories and easy connection.

We got to know an Oregon couple on a second visit with their 10 year old son. I looked forward to seeing them the next morning. At first I didn’t think a place like this would be for me… too safe or too foo foo maybe….so I asked why the return. ” James (son) couldn’t stop talking about the trip and the hot chocolate on tap. We have family down this way and it’s so much easier and enjoyable to camp without packing the gear.”

They got a point. Mendocino Grove feels kind of comfy but also kind of wild. You got the cute town of Mendocino so close with good restaurants and gorgeous views. But you also can get lost in redwoods and river, roast marshmallows over a camp fire and fall asleep under the stars – all with a warm bed, sauna and hot shower – just steps away.

Ok – I guess you got me too.

Nebraska volleyball hosted its 2025 alumni match on Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Huskers’ final preseason match ended in a victory against 10 of their most decorated alumni in four sets.

Ally Batenhorst, Lindsay Krause and Lauren Stivrens each put up 10 or more kills for the alumni team. Five Nebraska players finished the match with at least six. Junior outside hitter Harper Murray led the Huskers with 12 kills. Sophomore libero Olivia Mauch finished with nine digs, and Jordan Larson matched her for the alumni team.

Gina Mancuso-Prososki said it felt like a dream being back at Nebraska.

“I’m 34 now,” Mancuso-Prososki said. “I never thought I’d get to play in front of the Husker crowd again. That was an unbelievable opportunity that I’m forever grateful for.”

Krause recorded the first kill and point of the match. The alumni team proceeded to take a 3-0 advantage to start the first set.

The Huskers stormed back and scored four of the next five points to draw even. However, despite an early run by each team, neither group scored more than two points in a row again until Nebraska took a 23-20 lead in the later stages of the first set.

Batenhorst said the experience reminded her of playing against Nebraska at USC.

“It was super fun to be a Husker again and to be around so many leaders that I’ve looked up to… and to be across the net from my best friends again,” Batenhorst said.

The Huskers ended up taking the set 25-21 over the alumni team.

The second set began the same as the first, with the two sides knotted at four. Nebraska followed by scoring the next five points to take control of the set and force the alumni team into calling a timeout.

Nebraska went on to score eight of the last 10 points and win the second set 25-14. During that stretch, junior middle blocker Andi Jackson registered two kills, and freshman outside hitter Teraya Sigler put up a kill and two block assists.

Jackson said playing against some of her former teammates felt like being on the team again last year.

“It was really cool to get to play against them,” Jackson said. “When you’re getting recruited by Nebraska, those are the girls that you watch, and you look up to and you honestly learned so much from… getting to just have a full-circle moment and play a full match against them is really awesome.”

Four kills by Batenhorst in the first 12 points of set No. 3 helped the alumni team take a 9-3 lead. They extended their advantage as the set went on and led at one point 21-10 against the Huskers. The 11-point advantage was the alumni team’s largest of the match.

Head coach Dani Busboom Kelly said it was good for the team to face some adversity.

“(The alumni) were excited to play,” Busboom Kelly said. “They played great, and we got tested and kind of felt some pressure which was amazing going into next week.”

The alumni team won the third set 25-17 and defeated the Huskers for the first time in the match. Then, they carried the momentum gained from their third set victory into the fourth and managed to take an 8-2 lead.

However, Nebraska used a 4-0 run to get back within two. The alumni team, fueled by multiple kills by Krause and one by Batenhorst, retook its six-point advantage 10 points later. But the Huskers scored seven of the next eight points to draw even at 15.

Batenhorst and Mancuso-Prososki each said they felt like they were on the team again going into the match.

“It was like reliving the past,” Mancuso-Prososki said. “It was so special. You can’t really find anywhere else like Nebraska.”

Nebraska finished the set on a 10-to-7 run to win the set 25-22 and the match.

Nebraska will take on Pittsburgh at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, at Pinnacle Bank Arena in its first competitive match of the season.
