NEW YORK (AP) — Warner Bros. Discovery will calve off cable operations from its streaming service, creating two independent companies as the number of people “cutting the cord” brings with it a sustained upheaval in the entertainment industry.
HBO, and HBO Max, as well as Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, will become part of the streaming and studios company, Warner Bros. said Monday.
The cable company will include CNN, TNT Sports in the U.S., and Discovery, top free-to-air channels across Europe, and digital products such as the Discovery+ streaming service and Bleacher Report.
Shares jumped 11% at the opening bell.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav will become serve as CEO of the company that for right now is called Streaming & Studios. Gunnar Wiedenfels, chief financial officer of Warner Bros. Discovery, will be CEO of the cable-focused entity, for now known as Global Networks.
“By operating as two distinct and optimized companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today’s evolving media landscape,” Zaslav said in a statement.
Just days ago Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders in a vote that was symbolic as it’s nonbinding, rejected the 2024 pay packages of some executives, including Zaslav, who will make more than $51 million.
Warner Bros. Discovery said in December that it was implementing a restructuring plan in which Warner Bros. Discovery would become the parent company for two operating divisions, Global Linear Networks and Streaming & Studios. That was seen as a preview of the separation announced Monday.

A tech company CEO has resigned after controversy over a video captured on the big screen at a Coldplay concert.
Andy Byron resigned from his job as CEO of Astronomer Inc., according to a statement posted on LinkedIn by the company Saturday.
“Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met,” the company said in its post on LinkedIn.
The move comes a day after the company said that Byron had been placed on leave and the board of directors had launched a formal investigation into the incident, which went viral.
A short video clip from Coldplay’s concert Wednesday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, showed a man and a woman cuddling and smiling, his arms wrapped around her, as she leaned back into him. When they saw themselves on the big screen, her jaw dropped, her hands flew to her face and she spun away from the camera. He ducked out of the frame, as did she.
Lead singer Chris Martin had asked the cameras to scan the crowd for his “Jumbotron Song,” when he sings a few lines about the people the camera lands on.
“Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy,” he joked.
Internet sleuths identified the man as the chief executive officer of a U.S.-based company and the woman as its chief people officer.
Pete DeJoy, Astronomer’s cofounder and chief product officer, has been tapped as interim CEO while the company conducts a search for Byron’s successor.

“I had no idea who the couple was,” Grace Springer told The U.S. Sun Friday. “Just thought I caught an interesting reaction to the kiss cam and decided to post it.
“A part of me feels bad for turning these people’s lives upside down, but, play stupid games … win stupid prizes.”
Andy Byron, CEO of tech firm Astronomer, is now under formal investigation by the company’s board after he was allegedly caught with his arms around the company’s HR chief, Kristin Cabot, at a Coldplay concert Wednesday night.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin wondered if a couple was having an affair after he caught them on the “Kiss Cam.” The two are rumored to be Astronomer CEO Andy Byrona and Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot.
The couple quickly stopped their embrace and attempted to hide their faces when they were shown on the concert’s jumbotron. Springer filmed the odd moment on her phone and later posted it online.

Fox News confirmed Cabot and her ex-husband filed for divorce in 2018, and court documents appear to show their divorce was finalized in 2022.
According to New Hampshire property records, Kristin and Andrew Cabot purchased a home as a married couple in April 2024.
No divorce records have been found for Byron, who appears to still be married.
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin joked after the pair separated that they were “either having an affair or just very shy.”
“I hope their partners can heal from this and get a second chance at the happiness they deserve with their future still in front of them,” Springer told the Sun. “I hope, for them, my video was a blessing in disguise.”
She said the moment was a “hot topic” with people after the concert, “but no one knew who they were” until she posted the video.
“When I posted late last night before bed, it was picking up traction with a couple thousand views,” she said. “I woke up to 7 million. Now over 30 million. Overwhelmed to say the least.”

Brazil’s government is studying potential responses to further sanctions by U.S. President Donald Trump, including a limit on dividend payments by U.S. companies with operations in Brazil, according to O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s government is intensifying its deliberations on possible measures after the U.S. government announced it was revoking visas for some Brazilian Supreme Court justices. The move came after Justice Alexandre de Moraes sent police to raid the home of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro ahead of his trial on charges he attempted a coup to remain in power.
Finance Minister Fernando Haddad denied Brazil is considering limits on dividends as a retaliation against the U.S., Reuters reported, citing a statement.
The Brazilian government is also considering ending the licensing of U.S. drug patents and levying taxes on big tech firms, according to O Estado de S. Paulo and O Globo. It hasn’t made a decision and any measures will require Lula’s approval, the newspapers said.
The government intends to continue diplomatic negotiations with the Trump administration, O Estado de S. Paulo said, adding that any retaliatory measures may be adopted after Aug. 2. The U.S. government has announced a 50% tariff on Brazil that will take effect on Aug. 1, which Trump has tied to the charges against Bolsonaro.
The government is studying a tax on digital services offered by big tech companies, with different rates depending their revenues, O Globo reported, saying the measure is being analyzed by Finance Ministry.
Lula said on Saturday he’s certain that “no kind of intimidation or threat from anyone” will compromise the nation’s institutions in their mission to defend the rule of law.
“The interference of one country in the judiciary of another is unacceptable and violates the basic principles of respect and sovereignty between nations,” according to a statement published by Brazilian president offering support to the Supreme Court’s justices.
