F1's biggest scandals

“It’s not right for a current team to test a current car on tyres we’re going to be racing on here [in Monaco] or in two weeks in Montreal. But Nico Rosberg’s victory in the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix was overshadowed by the news of Mercedes conducting a three-day, 1000km test with its 2013 car, with the German and Hamilton as drivers, on behalf of Pirelli after the Spanish GP. Both Hamilton and Rosberg wore blacked-out helmets instead of their traditional designs, as rival teams Red Bull and Ferrari caught wind of the test on Saturday evening in Monaco. Predictably, Red Bull’s Christian Horner cried foul and immediately declared that the test lacked transparency.

Mercedes and Pirelli tyre test

It was also found that as permission had been sought for the test, Mercedes had “no reason to believe that approval had not been given”.”They have run a current car with current drivers and current tyres,” he said at the time. “That’s a clear breach of the sporting regulations and we’ve protested because we want clarity. F1 rules at the time dictated that bar the official young driver test, testing was expressively banned in-season. Both Pirelli and Mercedes then approached the FIA’s Charlie Whiting for approval for the test with the W04. Although Whiting was not in a position to formally green-light the running, his word was considered impeccable. It is believed he signalled that it could take place if the other teams were afforded the same opportunity. This is that story. Tyre supplier Pirelli had a contract with the FIA to allow it to do some limited running and approached Mercedes to do so to test new tyres set for introduction later in the 2013 season. As punishment, Mercedes was banned from taking part in the 2013 young driver test, with both it and Pirelli reprimanded for their actions.

Mercedes and Pirelli in hot water

“What’s disappointing is it’s been done in not a transparent manner. A three-day test has taken place with a current car running on tyres that are going to be used in the next grand prix and irrelevant of what you call it, that’s testing.”Pirelli had already asked the other teams in general terms if they would run when asked, and both Pirelli and Mercedes deemed it to be sufficient to run the test in the days after the Spanish GP. The rear tyres, in particular, degraded alarmingly quickly, to such an extent that during the Spanish GP, Hamilton, who had qualified in second place, was lapped, finishing 12th for his worst result until the 2021 Azerbaijan GP nearly eight years later. The 2013 Mercedes, the W04, had a problem: it had a ferocious appetite for Pirelli tyres. Pole-sitter Rosberg finished sixth, more than a minute down on winner Fernando Alonso as Mercedes tried desperately to understand why its car was so tyre-hungry. Back in the early days of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes tenure, a scandal enveloped the team over a ‘secret test’ it had conducted with Pirelli. In-season F1 testing was re-introduced in 2014 after specific grands prix, with Pirelli now rotating in-season testing through teams with current cars. “I can understand Pirelli wanting to test the tyres. They’ve obviously got issues with the tyres. The tribunal, however, found that Mercedes had broken Article 22.4 of the sporting regulations in conducting a test in-season with a current car, and that the FIA’s approval, handed out in “good faith” by Whiting, did not and could not override Article 22.4.Mercedes and Pirelli were subsequently hauled in front of an FIA tribunal, which found that the governing body had given “qualified approval” for the test. Whilst it was found that neither Pirelli nor Mercedes had acted in bad faith or gained any “unfair sporting advantage”, there was the possibility of Mercedes earning “an unfair sporting advantage”.

EU Commission Approves Liberty Media’s $4.4 Billion Purchase of Motorsport Series

The European Commission has granted an unconditional approval to Liberty Media Corporation for the purchase of MotoGP rights owner Dorna Sports for a reported $4.4 billion.

Popular for owning Formula One, Liberty Media is a renowned player in the sports, media, and entertainment sector. It will acquire 84 percent of Dorna, while the remaining 16 percent will be retained by the MotoGP management. The deal is expected to be concluded by July 3, 2025.

The acquisition of MotoGP means the premier class of motorcycle racing, and F1 will now be under the same ownership. Liberty Media’s high-profile takeover of MotoGP came under scrutiny from the European Union towards the end of 2024. An investigation was conducted to assess the deal’s potential impact on broadcasters and streaming platforms, since both forms of motorsports fall under a single ownership umbrella.

The deal was expected to close last year, but the investigation for potential anti-competitive effects caused delays, and a purchase of MotoGP was possible only after Liberty Media received official approval.

While the deal’s impact on MotoGP cannot be assessed, one can only anticipate an upward trajectory, considering the way F1 has grown globally, especially in the American market since its acquisition by Liberty Media in 2017.

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna, who will continue to manage the two-wheeled sport, looks forward to accelerating MotoGP’s growth. He said in a statement:

“We are very happy that the European Commission has approved the transaction. This is an important milestone confirming the even brighter future that lies ahead for MotoGP.

“MotoGP is one of the most thrilling sports on Earth, and we look forward to accelerating the sport’s growth and expanding its reach to even more fans around the world. Liberty is the best possible partner for our sport and the entire MotoGP community, and we are excited to create even greater value for our fans, commercial partners and everyone competing.”

Liberty Media President and CEO, Derek Chang added:

“Today’s approval from the European Commission marks the final condition to closing Liberty’s acquisition of MotoGP. We are thrilled to officially commence Liberty’s partnership with Carmelo and his excellent management team.

“MotoGP is a highly attractive premium sports asset with incredible racing, a passionate fanbase and a strong cash flow profile. We believe the sport and brand have significant growth potential, which we will look to realize through deepening the connection with the core fan base and expanding to a wider global audience.”

Carl Edwards, a NASCAR legend in his own right, has been caught off guard since returning from his hiatus by Kyle Busch’s ongoing difficulties in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Busch is currently caught in a winless rut, marking 74 races without a victory following a 20th-place finish at Pocono Raceway on Sunday. He recently admitted feeling “like a broken record” and confessed to a rookie error as he showed his true colors when among 12 stars penalized at a recent race.

Edwards reflects on a stark contrast from the formidable performances he witnessed from Busch, his one-time teammate until he walked away from the sport after accusing NASCAR of manipulating a race that cost him the 2016 championship title.

At age 40, Busch, a veteran and two-time Cup Series champion, languishes at 19th in the series standings, a shadow of the “stone-cold killer” reputation he once held among competitors. Edwards, who boasts 28 career victories in the Cup Series, is now part of Amazon Prime Video’s team and at The Great American Getaway 400 in Pocono he expressed his surprise at Busch’s unexpected slump.

Edwards reminisced, saying: “Very strange for me to come back to this sport after being gone so long and to see Kyle Busch struggling, right?

“In my time in this sport, Kyle Busch, literally, was the guy to beat. I got to be his teammate for a while, got to see inside a little bit of how Kyle Busch operates

“He is a stone-cold killer on the race track. This guy is amazing. So to be able to handle this part of his career the way he is, I think it shows a maturation and I’m just hoping he can come out on the other side of this and do it for us old guys,” Edwards shared.

“He just needs to conjure up some of that Kyle Busch magic. I’ve been behind him and watched Kyle Busch pull off feats that leave me scratching my head.

“He’s shown he can work wonders in a race car, and I really hope he can reclaim that magic.”

Following a disappointing performance at Pocono, Busch now sets his sights on the Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway this Sunday. Not only does this race present another opportunity to break his winless streak, but it also marks the beginning of NASCAR’s inaugural In-Season Challenge with a $1 million prize.

Busch, seeded No. 16, will go head-to-head with Brad Keselowski, with the driver who finishes higher at Atlanta advancing to the round of 16.

Chase Briscoe has beaten team-mate Denny Hamlin at Pocono to take his first NASCAR Cup Series victory as a Joe Gibbs Racing driver.

With the way that strategies and cautions had played out, Briscoe led the Great American Getaway 400 ahead of the closing stages, but was under huge pressure from both his team-mate and his own car.

NASCAR HEADLINES: Jeff Gordon issues Kyle Larson verdict as Cup Series team hit with multiple penalties

Briscoe left his fuel box too early during his last pit stop, and his crew were fearful he didn’t have enough fuel on board to make it to the end, with the No. 19 forced to deploy plenty of lifting and coasting during the final stint with Hamlin breathing right down his neck.

Briscoe held on, however, and in doing so, became the third Joe Gibbs Racing driver to lock himself into the 2025 Cup Series playoffs after Hamlin and Christopher Bell.

Hamlin eventually came home in P2 behind Briscoe, having looked strong throughout the race, with Ryan Blaney finishing third, an impressive run after being sent to the rear before the green flag.

Elsewhere, it proved to be a miserable day for 23XI Racing, with Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace and Riley Herbst classified as 32nd, 36th and 37th after issues for each during the race.

Wallace and Reddick are now under increasing pressure to hold onto their spot above the playoff bubble, with neither driver yet to win a race this season and lock themselves in.

With that said, let’s take a look at the full race results below, including stages one and two.

When NASCAR heads to Atlanta this weekend to race at the newly renamed at EchoPark Speedway, 40 Cup cars will be present for what is sure to be yet another thrilling race at the Georgia track.

The Cup Series has only reached 40 entries twice this year before Atlanta, and they were both crown jewel events. 41 cars started the Daytona 500 with the field expanding beyond max capacity due to Helio Castroneves taking the Open Exemption Provisional. There were also 40 cars taking part in the Coca Cola 600 for NASCAR’s longest race with Ross Chastain making history as he drove from 40th to first to win the event.

Atlanta will be the latest race to feature 40 cars with four open entries beyond the 36 full-time chartered teams. Corey LaJoie will be piloting the No. 01 Ford for Rick Ware Racing in his fourth start of the year, which follows his stint as a analyst for Prime Video.

Rising star Connor Zilisch will be driving a fourth entry for Trackhouse, again piloting the No. 87 Chevrolet with sponsorship from Red Bull. Zilisch, who won the most recent NASCAR Xfinity race at Pocono with Dale Jr. as his crew chief, will be making his third Cup start of the year.

The other two open entries will be B.J. McLeod in the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet and 57-year-old David Starr in the No. 66 Garage 66 (formerly MBM Motorsports) Ford Mustang.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series will be joining the Cup Series at Atlanta while the NASCAR Truck Series heads north to compete at Lime Rock Park for the very first time.

The first round of the NASCAR in-season tournament begins Saturday night at EchoPark Speedway (aka Atlanta Motor Speedway) as teams now have their path to the $1 million bonus.

Atlanta kicks off the new event before it makes stops in Chicago, Sonoma, Dover, and finishes at Indianapolis. The tournament is a simple head-to-head matchup for drivers, with the highest finisher among them advancing.

The top seeds were Denny Hamlin, Chase Briscoe, Chris Buescher and Christopher Bell. NASCAR determined the seeding by a driver’s best finish from the three races held at Michigan, Mexico City and Pocono. Hamlin, of course, won at Michigan, and Briscoe won at Pocono.

The first-round matchups are:

(No. 1) Denny Hamlin vs (No. 32) Ty Dillon

(No. 2) Chase Briscoe vs (No. 31) Noah Gragson

(No. 3) Chris Buescher vs (No. 30) Todd Gilliland

(No. 4) Christopher Bell vs (No. 29) Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

(No. 5) Chase Elliott vs (No. 28) Austin Dillon

(No. 6) Ty Gibbs vs (No. 27) Justin Haley

(No. 7) Ryan Blaney vs (No. 26) Carson Hocevar

(No. 8) Alex Bowman vs (No. 25) Joey Logano

(No. 9) Bubba Wallace vs (No. 24) Daniel Suarez

(No. 10) Kyle Larson vs (No. 23) Tyler Reddick

(No. 11) Michael McDowell vs (No. 22) AJ Allmendinger

(No. 12) John Hunter Nemechek vs (No. 21) Josh Berry

(No. 13) Ross Chastain vs (No. 20) Erik Jones

(No. 14) Zane Smith vs (No. 19) Austin Cindric

(No. 15) Ryan Preece vs (No. 18) William Byron

(No. 16) Kyle Busch vs (No. 17) Brad Keselowski

TNT Sports will carry the duration of the tournament. The channel begins its five-race portion of Cup Series coverage this weekend (Saturday, 7pm ET). They will also offer an alternate broadcast for fans interested (on truTV) that is hosted by Larry McReynolds and Jeff Burton. They will break down the storylines and bracket each week.
