● About Nathan: Byrd, 24, began racing go-karts in 2018, just after graduating High School, and he entered his first car race in February 2020.

Since then, the Goodyear, Ariz. native has raced over 30 types of cars in 348 total races at 67 different race tracks, effectively becoming one of the most diverse and interesting race car drivers in the world.

Completing more than 300 races in the first four years of his career, Byrd is no stranger to piloting race cars.

In 2024, the Indianapolis, Ind. resident turned his attention to NASCAR. He successfully made his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut at Portland International Raceway and delivered a respectable 21st-place finish for DGM Racing.

In September, Byrd made his NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series debut at Kansas Speedway, earning a respectable 19th-place finish after starting 32nd.

On Racing Pocono Raceway Like a Road Course: “From watching past race footage, it definitely looks like my road course experience will come in handy, especially in the high-speed, high-commitment corners. The fundamentals of technique are very similar, but taking a truck right to the limit is incredibly nuanced, and nothing truly prepares you for that except seat time in the real thing.

“It’s wild to see how Pocono has road course-style corners yet still races like a traditional NASCAR oval because of the bump-drafting and the battles between the high and low lines.

“I’d even say it looks like classic oval racing on starts and restarts, but once things get single-file and stretched out, it starts to resemble road racing again. Very interesting dynamic!”

On Pocono Raceway Goals: “I’d love to get some of our recent momentum back and leave Pocono Raceway with a lead-lap, top-15 finish. Even if we fall a bit short of that, a solid top-20 would still give us something to build on.

“The goal is to keep pushing forward and keep the Young’s Motorsports team in the spotlight as we head into the heart of the summer stretch.

Hyak Motorsports has parted ways with spotter Tab Boyd, who worked with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and the No. 47 Chevrolet. Weekend rosters show that Clayton Hughes will be atop the spotter’s stand for Pocono, replacing Boyd.

Stenhouse confirmed the news on Friday morning in a SiriusXM NASCAR interview, saying: “That’s an unfortunate deal. The team let Tab Boyd go this week, and we got Clayton Hughes to come fill in. I’ve never worked with Clayton.”

No reason was given for the firing of Boyd and while Motorsport.com reached out to the team for clarification, we have not yet heard back from team representatives. 

Mexico controversy

However, Boyd has been in the news this week for sharing a post on X (formerly Twitter) where he expressed his displeasure with Mexico during NASCAR’s recent visit – the first points-paying Cup race outside of the United States since 1958.

Boyd has since deleted his account after pushback online, but the original post read as follows: “I’m ready to go home, screw this place, people can talk it up all they want. Can’t even walk out the front door of the hotel without getting hustled and money snatched in less than five minutes. Good area my ass.”

Boyd was apparently the victim of scammers and while he will not be working the Cup race this weekend, he is still listed as the spotter for Ryan Ellis and the No. 71 DGM Racing Chevrolet in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, as well as for Luke Baldwin and the No. 66 ThorSport Ford in the NASCAR Truck Series.

Boyd is a veteran spotter with years of experience, previously working with Hendrick Motorsports and William Byron on the No. 24 Chevrolet. He joined Stenhouse and the No. 47 team three years ago in 2022 and together, the duo won the 2023 Daytona 500.

This situation follows Spire Motorsports’ decision to fine their own driver, Carson Hocevar. On Tuesday, the team announced that Hocevar was fined $50,000 following an internal investigation into comments he made on a Twitch live-stream, calling Mexico a “s***hole.” The money will go to various Mexican charities and Hocevar will have to undergo mandatory cultural-sensitivity and bias-awareness training.

Yamaha Motor Finance Corporation, U.S.A., dba Yamaha Financial Services, continues its Dealer Spotlight video series. This series highlights key business partners who achieve success in the powersports industry. The company recently honored Bobby J’s Yamaha of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bobby J’s stands out among dealers with Yamaha Financial Services and received the “Apex Award.” This award celebrates the dealer’s racing history, third-generation ownership and legacy as the oldest Yamaha dealership in the U.S.

A Legacy that Began in 1956

Bobby Johnson founded Bobby J’s in 1956, making it the nation’s oldest Yamaha company dealer. Three generations of Johnsons — Bobby, Stan and Keith — have owned and operated the business continuously. Keith rode his first motorcycle at three years old. That early passion helped grow the dealership into a racing and community advocate.

“’Treating customers right’ remains the business’s core value, according to all three generations of Johnson men. To create a standout experience, they implement something called the ‘Ticket to Rip It,’” says Keith Johnson. “When you come in as a customer of ours, you get the whole dealership tour — you get to meet the parts department, you get to meet the service department. Speaking to Kevin Harvick on his ‘Happy Hour’ podcast, Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis, who used to work as the CEO for Dodge under Stellantis, made it clear that the manufacturer has Cup aspirations. Ram recently announced their plans to return to the Truck Series in 2026, but the return of Dodge to Cup could come as soon as 2027.

“Coming into Truck is a lot easier than coming into Cup,” admitted Kuniskis before adding: “It’s going to take a little bit longer to get to Cup. Our goal is to get to Cup a year after that (Truck return). Now, everybody has told me we’re crazy, there’s no way you’re gonna get there, but we think there’s a couple of things from our legacy that might speed that development time up. And maybe, maybe we can be at Daytona this year with Truck and then the following year, Daytona in Cup. 

“A lot of very smart people — smarter than me — said you better plan on two years to get back to Cup. But TBD (to be determined). I’m always pushing for the quicker timeline. So, I’m hoping that it’s 2027 … 2026 for Truck and 2027 for Cup.”

He also said that there were a couple other opportunities to re-enter the sport over the past 12 years, but those plans never came to fruition. “It’s been way too long,” said Kuniskis.

NASCAR executive vice president John Probst previously stated that the minimum time for preparing a Cup entry is likely around 18 months.

Dodge left the Cup Series at the conclusion of the 2012 season, leaving Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota as the only three manufacturers at the top level of the sport. They also left the sport as champions, winning the title with Brad Keselowski and Team Penske.

Ram has not yet announced their exact plans for 2026, including what team(s) and drivers they will be associated with. You can also watch the full interview with Harvick HERE.

LONG POND, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It’s not every day you get to see your hometown represented in one of the top-ranked motorsports organizations in the world.

But now, thanks to partnerships in the Poconos and even our news station, part of NEPA will be spotlighted on the racetrack for all to see.

At Pocono Raceway, the energy is electrifying as fans and drivers are getting ready for three series. The Craftsman Truck Series Friday, the Xfinity Series Saturday, and the big NASCAR Cup Series Sunday.

Many people have their favorite driver they cheer on, but one car in Saturday’s Xfinity Race is getting our region extra pumped. No. 99 decked out in Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau designs and even has our 28/22 news logo.

The roar of an engine in Long Pond can only mean one thing.

“NASCAR’s back in the Poconos, we’re kicking off summer!” said the president of the Pocono Raceway, Ben May.

It’s all part of the stock car experience, giving people the chance to get behind the wheel, but ahead of the Xfinity Series Race Saturday, this is just giving us a taste of the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau sponsoring the no. 99 Chevrolet with Viking Motorsports driven by Matt Dibenedetto.

“One thing led to another and then to another, and we had an opportunity to develop one of our own cars and then also have one within the race,” said President/CEO of the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau Chris Barrett.

Also showcasing a 28/22 News logo, Barrett says it’s the partnerships that helped bring this vision to life.

“It’s just really humbling and gratifying to be able to see PTN kind of start from very humble beginnings to where it is right now,” said Barrett.

Camaraderie that Pocono Raceway President Ben May says continues to drive in visitors to NEPA.

“It goes to show that this community, we’re together, right? And I’m not saying we haven’t always been, but we are more so than ever, and it’s showing,” explained May.

With millions of people tuning into the sport, Pocono Raceway and PMVB take the wheel, putting our area on the map. Not just across the country, but globally.

Coming off a series in Mexico City, NASCAR is drawing in more international attention.

Here at the Tricky Triangle, around 60% of fans come from out of state, with guests from all 50 states set to attend.

“That’s tens of millions of dollars every year that’s coming into this market, that are providing for folks who work within this market, and it’s a critical economic benefit to our region,” said Barrett.

Sights and sounds at the track are an experience to remember, and never forget in the Pocono Mountains.

“I think post-pandemic people really figured it out. They came and visited, and they’re like, ‘oh wait this place is a little quiet, we didn’t know it existed, it’s awesome, we’re coming back,’ and you’ve seen that more and more and more,” said May.

Gates are opening at noon, and the paddock in the infield will soon be flooded with fans looking forward to another NASCAR weekend at the Tricky Triangle.

His win wasn’t a surprise. The New Zealand native is a road course ace. But it has shaken up the playoff picture, as entering the race, he sat 33rd in the points standings. Van Gisbergen had failed to qualify for the inaugural In-Season Tournament. His season is now saved, the same way Harrison Burton saved his with his surprise win at Daytona International Speedway last season. Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn’t have an issue with it then, and he doesn’t now, he said on the “Dale Jr. Download.”

“There is a bit of a conversation, I suppose, going on around the sport, similarly to last year when Harrison Burton won his race and sent the Wood Brothers into the playoffs sitting around 30th in points. It’s the way the rules are written. I don’t necessarily have a problem with it. I didn’t have a problem with it last year,” Earnhardt said. “If that’s how NASCAR wants to write the rules, I can embrace it. Everyone knows what they are when the season begins.

“Do I think SVG is going to go and spoil the Championship battle by winning the whole thing outright? I don’t. His performance on the ovals would argue he still has a ways to go. So, I’m not so worried about that and I don’t even feel like he’s stealing a spot from somebody maybe better deserving; somebody 15th, 14th in points.”

Steve Letarte reacts to Shane van Gisbergen clinching playoff spot

Despite his inexperience on ovals, it was always likely van Gisbergen could win on a road course and become playoff-bound. It’s why Trackhouse Racing owner Justin Marks has him in the No. 88 car. Winning is hard, and as Steve Letarte pointed out, this wasn’t a fluke; nobody had an answer to van Gisbergen in Mexico City.

“I think stealing a spot is a slap in the face to what he just did. He earned a spot. He beat you by 15-and-a-half seconds, if I might add,” Letarte said. “We’re not talking a photo finish. I’m not a believer that you should be in the top 30 or top 25 in points. I know this is not popular in the garage. There’s people who feel like you should have to be high enough. But man, he’s gone to every race. This isn’t a one-off entry. That would bother me. If Trackhouse ran different drivers and just cherry picked and tried to win their way in on the Owners Championship, I’d be like, alright, I think we’re getting out there a little bit. That’s not what they’re doing.

“They have committed to SVG. Every race, he is there. His approach — he’s trying to be better on the ovals. I’m totally good with this. Harrison Burton last year — that was one of the moments of the entire year. I was up there in the booth watching Jeff [Burton] get to call his son to Victory Lane. … Then, somebody has the audacity to go, ‘Well, it shouldn’t count.’ You’re just mad because your driver didn’t win. It absolutely should count.”

How far can Shane van Gisbergen go in playoffs?

Van Gisbergen will be one of 16 drivers vying for the Championship. Letarte doesn’t see him making a deep run; however, he noted that if he makes it out of the Round of 16, the Charlotte ROVAL is on the Round of 12 schedule.

“I’m great with SVG winning. I’m also not all blue sky like he’s going to make a deep run. No, he isn’t. Like, he’s just not,” Letarte said. “I think he could get out of Round 1, maybe. If he gets out of Round 1, shame on the other drivers to not eliminate him. I’m a big competition guy. If you let him out of Round 1 to go win the ROVAL, shame on you for letting him out of Round 1.”
