Sleeper Picks

Jeremy Paul (+500) … For last week’s Valspar Championship, I had earmarked Sam Ryder for a Top 40 for Sleepers, but FanDuel didn’t have a market and Ryder seemingly was a reach for a Top 20. Lo and behold, he delivered a T16 punctuated by a nothing-but-net ace on the par-3 17th hole in the third round. (Shout out to my colleague, Chris Breece, for connecting with Ryder at +150 for a Top 40 at DraftKings in his weekly Bank Builder, so the bet was covered in our Golfbet content.) I also had Paul on the shortlist for the same bet, so he also was omitted in the absence of a market. That said, the German gave investors in for a Top 20 a wild ride that resulted in a T22, 17 places lower than where he started the final round. Still, with that and a T16 in his previous start at the Puerto Rico Open, he remains in the crosshairs. The rookie is inside the top 30 on the PGA TOUR in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and greens in regulation, exactly the skill set required to get over on Memorial Park.

Cedar Crest’s Eliana Schneider estimated it took about 10 minutes to process.

Shocked. Chagrined. Proud. Happy. The emotions covered all the bases. Flooded in waves and varying levels.

“In the end of this season, I didn’t accomplish all the things that I wanted to,” Schneider said. “There was a lot of fuel for today. Just making sure I was doing everything correctly, and then just putting out a good throw and doing the best that I could.”

Schneider, after missing a repeat crown in the District Three Class 3A girls javelin in May, did one better on Sunday.

The rising senior stepped into a throw of 147 feet, 3 inches on the Franklin Field infield in Philadelphia and soared to gold at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor track and field meet. Schneider’s third preliminary attempt delivered the crowning result.

“I was throwing with a lot of good girls, so you never know who’s gonna pop one,” Schneider said. “I was definitely hoping that it would stand, at least put me in the top six.”

Schneider earned All-American honors with the title, as did McCaskey’s Jada Lubin, a sixth-place finisher behind a heave of 138-5. Lubin dethroned Schneider at the district championships and mined Lancaster-Lebanon League gold with the Crest standout forgoing the competition.

Sunday wasn’t Schneider’s first New Balance rodeo. The spring shortcomings and past trips to Penn created the champion headspace.

“It was just a lot of mindset stuff,” Schneider said. “Knowing that I’d been in that position before, and just recognizing that I can be there, I can be throwing with those people, I can perform well, that definitely helped this year. I also wasn’t throwing as much. So in past years, I was kind of worn out and tired at that point. But I came in fresh.”

Manheim Township returned to the podium in the boys distance medley relay Sunday, kicking to fifth place at 9:56.35. The pace set a new state record and handed the quartet of Cole Stevens, Mason Sheaffer, Ethan Peffley and Adam Kingston its second medal and All-American nod of the meet.

The Blue Streaks squad landed fourth in Thursday’s 6,400-meter relay at 17:20.35. Stevens also scored an eighth-place performance in the boys steeplechase on Saturday, clocking an L-L and program-record time of 6:01.99.

Croatia’s under-20 national water polo team has claimed the bronze medal at the World Championships held in Zagreb, marking a triumphant end to a golden era of junior water polo.

In the third-place play-off, the young Barakudas delivered their best performance of the tournament with a convincing 13-8 victory over Hungary.

The win was not only a medal-winning performance but also Croatia’s first-ever triumph over Hungary at a major junior tournament.

This result crowns an exceptional year for this generation, who previously won gold at the European Championships. Their success confirms Croatia’s continued dominance in the world of water polo.

Head coach Zoran Bajić’s squad was outstanding in defence, led by captain and goalkeeper Mauro Ivan Čubranić. Čubranić made an incredible 20 saves in the match, including a penalty, putting on a captain’s display in his final junior outing.

In attack, Luka Penava stood out as the player of the match, scoring key goals at crucial moments. “There is no better feeling than finishing the tournament with a win – especially when it comes with our first ever victory over Hungary in a major competition,” Penava said after the match.

To top off an already memorable tournament, Vlaho Pavlić was named top scorer of the World Championships with an impressive 30 goals.

UK Athletics’ assistant track and cross country coach Hakon DeVries has been suspended pending investigation by the university’s Office of Equal Opportunity.

University spokesperson Jay Blanton confirmed that DeVries has been suspended with pay.

DeVries recently completed his twelfth year with the Wildcats as assistant coach. He was initially hired by former track and field head coach Edrick Floreal, according to UK Athletics.

According to the university, the Office of Equal Opportunity “handles both internal and external complaints of discrimination, handles complaints of sexual misconduct, trains the University community on equal opportunity, [and] fosters a diverse and inclusive learning and working environment.”

This includes investigations of Title IX violations, which encompass both sexual harassment and sexual misconduct.

The suspension comes amid an ongoing federal sexual abuse lawsuit against the athletics department involving former head swim coach Lars Jorgensen. Jorgensen resigned in June 2023 after being named in the suit filed by former UK swimmers for both sexual abuse and rape allegations. The trial for the lawsuit is scheduled for June 2026 in Lexington.

“The university takes very seriously reports of inappropriate behavior,” Blanton said.

“Our Office of Equal Opportunity investigates thoroughly and recommends disciplinary measures depending on the findings and specifics of each case.”
