Soccer in school? Alexandria City schools to host special PE classes for its 2nd graders

With soccer continuing to grow in popularity across the United States, one D.C.-area school district is set to pilot a program in which elite-level coaches will teach the sport during its physical education classes.

Starting this fall, more than 1,300 second graders at all 14 elementary schools in Alexandria City Public Schools will receive soccer lessons from professional soccer coaches for two weeks. Called “Soccer IN School,” the training program will be a part of the student’s PE classes, thanks to a $200,000 grant over three years given by the U.S. Soccer Federation.

The coaches will come from the Alexandria Soccer Association, which provides youth recreational and club-level opportunities for children in the Virginia city.

Johnatan Nunez, the soccer association’s outreach and school programs manager, told WTOP that the students will be introduced to referees and the rules of the sport.

Students will receive a “Soccer Skills Challenge” packet with a soccer ball, jersey and information on continuing to play the sport through the organization’s recreational or academy programs.

“Some kids may have never played soccer before. Some kids have played soccer all their lives. It’s the sport they only know,” Nunez said. He hopes students come in “with an open mind and being ready to learn something new, and in the end, just feel excited about getting to play the sport.”

Since the soccer lessons are part of regular PE classes, no additional forms or permissions will be required. The coaches’ visits will be spread out throughout the academic year so each school will have equal time.

According to a news release, the PE teacher will also participate in the classes while receiving special training from the U.S. Soccer coaching education program.

In addition to the second graders receiving the lessons, ACPS Health and PE Instructional Specialist Kristin Donley said the rest of the student body will also benefit.

“They will also be giving the PE teachers as sort of a curriculum guide or a unit guide that can be adapted to other grade levels too,” she said of the Alexandria Soccer Association.

The school system and ASA already have a partnership, with the soccer organization hosting multiple after-school clinics and some PE takeovers at different schools throughout the year. Now, with the grant, Nunez said that their relationship will be strengthened with more specific programming for students in an age range who desire more structure in their athletics.

“We want to professionalize it and make it kind of more of a standard where we’re at every school every year, and it’s something that even beyond the three years we want to continue to do,” Nunez said.

Katie Brooks of the Alexandria Soccer Association said the classes and how they are phased into Alexandria City schools would also become a model for how U.S. Soccer would like to carry similar programs in other districts around the country.

“We know this would be scaled nationwide,” Brooks said. “And so, we’re going to do the best we can do here to kick things off.”

For some students, it will be their first time participating in the sport. However, Donley said the coaches will devise kid-friendly drills that focus on more than just their soccer-playing abilities.

“Helping students build their confidence and their team building skills and working with others, and the cooperation piece,” she said. “It’s not just about soccer; it’s about all of those other pieces as well.”

The grant also pays for player appearances during the sessions. With the D.C. region home to multiple professional and semipro teams, the opportunities of bringing someone that will motivate the students are endless, Donley said. She would prefer someone local who may have gone through the ACPS system to be brought in.

Nunez agreed but said the opportunity for students to meet their hero and even get an autograph could motivate a child to continue pursuing their soccer dreams. He quickly named Washington Spirit star Trinity Rodman as a potential option, telling WTOP the forward and any of her teammates are welcome to spend time with the students.

“We would love to have her come out and encourage our girls to (see) how big they can be in the world,” Nunez said.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (June 23, 2025) – Freddy Delgado will join NAU Soccer as an assistant coach ahead of the 2025 season, as announced by head coach Alan Berrios on Monday afternoon.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Freddy to our Lumberjack family. His experience at both the Division I and Division II levels speaks volumes about the value he brings to our program. Freddy is a proven coach with a track record of success at every stop in his career—both on and off the field. Throughout the interview process, it became clear that Freddy’s passion for the women’s game, along with his ability to connect with today’s evolving athletes, has been a key factor in his sustained success across all levels of the sport,” Berrios said.

Delgado is coming off a three-year tenure at Menlo College where he served as the Head Coach of the Women’s Soccer program, boasting 15 wins and back-to-back GSAC Tournament semifinal appearances in 2022 and 2023. Delgado developed six All-GSAC honorees, as well as five GSAC and NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

“He’s ready to make an immediate impact in every aspect of our program, especially in recruiting. Freddy has developed strong relationships across the country that will help elevate our recruiting efforts right away. His deep knowledge of the game and his talent for relating to modern student-athletes make him an outstanding addition to our team,” Berrios said.

After a stellar playing career at Division II Regis University, Delgado began his journey into coaching at his alma mater from 1997-2001, helping guide the women’s program to back-to-back Rocky Mountain Conference titles in 1999 and 2000. During that time, Coach Delgado was also a member of the coaching staff for the Colorado Olympic Development Program, and head coach of the Colorado Rush U16 boys club team.

Coach Delgado then moved to Louisiana to serve as assistant coach for Division I University of Louisiana, Monroe from 2001 to 2007. He helped guide the Warhawks to 58 wins in that time, including a program-record 14 in 2004. This earned Coach Delgado his first head coaching role, at Division I University of Arkansas, Little Rock.  From 2008-2012 at UALR, Delgado amassed 33 victories, the fourth-most in program history for the Trojans. He led them to their first-ever appearance in the Sun Belt Championship Match in 2009.

Delgado made his most recent head coaching stop at Division I New Mexico State. He guided the Aggies to 24 wins from 2014-2017, making him the winningest coach in NMSU Women’s Soccer history. Following his time in New Mexico, Delgado spent one season as an assistant coach at Dixie State, and four years as the director of coaching for Fire FC, overseeing 70 teams and over 900 players. Delgado joined Menlo after serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Colorado State University, Pueblo.

She is a dynamic and tenacious forward known for her clinical ability, who consistently finds the back of the net, including multiple hat tricks. Tingley combines aggression in the attack with strong off-ball movement, making her a constant threat in the final third. She’s a player with pace, finishing touch and confidence.

She did more than enough to catch the attention of the UNC Tar Heels staff, and she was among the first Class of 2027 prospects to verbally commit this month. Hanf and her teammates will aim to continue their success in Group J of the U16 Champions League.

Malace is a high-impact, versatile defender who excels across the entire back line for Fairfax Virginia Union 2009 (competing in ECNL North American Cup), both as a center back and outside back. Known for her elite tactical awareness, she dependably shuts down top-tier attackers and anticipates plays before they develop. Her exceptional distribution (especially long-range passing) adds tremendous value in transition, as she reliably jumpstarts the attack from the back.

———————

Amari Manning | Forward
PDA Blue 2009 (NJ)

As PDA Blue 2009 aims to add a second ECNL National Championship to their trophy case, Manning enters the postseason in strong form once again, as she’s coming off another call-up to the U.S. U-16 Girls National Team. She’s one of the most intimidating players for opposing defenders to take on, since she possesses such a rare combination of speed, strength, technical skills and passing ability. (HIGHLIGHTS)

PCC Women's Soccer Produces Largest Transfer Class

Itzel Nunez is one of eight PCC Lancers to continue their playing/academic careers at 4-year

Eight members of the most victorious Pasadena City College women’s soccer team in school history will continue their playing and academic careers at 4-year universities. It’s the largest class of student-athlete transfers ever produced by the program.

Itzel Nunez, an All-State defender, earned a playing scholarship at NCAA Division II West Virgina State University.

Nunez, a 2-time, All-South Coast Conference selection, proved to be one of the best defensive players in community college soccer in her two years.

A supreme talent, Nunez is strong at headers both in the defensive zone to clear out opponent opportunities and near the opposing net on corner kicks. She also displays strong ball-handling skills, creating transition plays upfield. She helped PCC limit opponents to just 0.56 goals per game. She collected the PCC Athletics Sandi Iverson Award.

Angely Puga, a forward who was second on the Lancers in scoring this past season with 22 points (seven goals, eight assists), is on her way to D2 Saint Martin’s University (Lacey, Washington). Puga finished at #19 on the PCC All-Time Scoring List with 14 goals, 14 assists for 42 points.

Sydney Esquival, a starting defender who played one season for the Lancers, is headed to D-II Chaminade University (Honolulu, Hawaii).

Hailey Hull, a clutch forward over her two seasons with a remarkable eight game-winning goals in that time, takes her talents to NAIA Point University (West Point, Georgia). Hull is 21st on the Lancers scoring list with 17 goals and five helpers (39 points).

Three Lancers will play together at the next level at D-III Marietta College (Ohio) in All-State goalie Francesca Agliolo, All-SCC First Team midfielder Delilah Vazquez, and 2-year letterman defender Tatiana Grigoryan, who was All-SCC Second Team as a freshman in 2023.

Agliolo has the distinction of the two lowest goals against averages in a season by a PCC goalie playing at least 1,000 minutes with a 1.18 mark as a freshman and her 0.57 GAVG this past season, third best in the state in 2024. In 37 career games, she was a part of 14 team shutouts and seven others with one goal against, produced a 23-5-4 goalie record, and an .842 save percentage with 139 saves. Agliolo earned a PCC Athletics Elizabeth Jensen Transfer Award.

Vazquez, the conference leader in assists with 10, added three goals in a breakout ’24 campaign. Grigoryan bolstered PCC’s solid defense as a consistent performer.

Natalia Portillo, the team’s second goalie in her two seasons, will attend and play at D-III University of La Verne. Portillo also had solid numbers as she never lost a decision (12-0-2) and held a 0.47 GAVG in 1,149 total minutes.

“One of the perks of having the success that our 2024 team put together is seeing so many continue their playing careers and earn scholarships,” said Lancers head coach Terryn Soelberg, the SoCal Region Coach of the Year. “Our sophomore group was extremely talented and pushed us to reach the regional finals.”

The Lancers finished 19-2-2 overall, the most wins in a season by the program, captured their first South Coast Conference Tournament title, and made its best postseason finish ever, finishing just a victory short of reaching the state tournament final four.
