Race weekend: Cindric gives Team Penske its first win of NASCAR season with victory at unusually calm Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — Austin Cindric celebrated his first win of the season by wearing Talladega’s Superspeedway traditional victory wreath all around the track.

A wreath like he just won the Indianapolis 500.

He thought so, too.

“Feels like I just won the Indy 500,” he said of Sunday’s NASCAR race. “I’m trying to walk on the plane with this.”

Cindric wasn’t even concerned how such a gesture might be received by Team Penske teammate Joey Logano, who raged on his radio after the second stage when Cindric didn’t push him and it allowed Bubba Wallace in a Toyota to win the segment and its valuable bonus points.

“Way to go Austin,” seethed Logano, who used multiple expletives in his anger over his Penske radio. “You just gave it to him. Gave a Toyota a stage win. Nice job. Way to go … put that in the book.”

Cindric was unconcerned by the idea Logano might take issue with the wreath on the Penske plane.

“I think that would be very immature,” Cindric said. “I don’t see him doing that. We’ll see.”

It was a celebratory day for Cindric, who gave Team Penske its first NASCAR victory of the season by holding off a huge pack of challengers over the closing lap in a rare drama-free day at Talladega Superspeedway.

“Rock on, guys,” Cindric said over his radio. “Rock and roll. Let’s go!”

Ford drivers went 1-2, with Ryan Preece finishing second. But Preece and Logano were disqualified following postrace inspections because of spoiler infractions. Logano had crossed the finish line in fifth.

After the DQ’s, Kyle Larson moved up to second and William Byron third for Hendrick Motorsports. The two Chevrolet drivers pushed Cindric and Preece from the second row rather than pull out of line on the final lap and make a third lane in an attempt to win.

It was Larson’s best career finish at Talladega, where drafting and pack racing is required and neither suits his style. He said he wanted to make a move to try to take the win from Cindric but there was never any room.

“I wanted to take it, but I felt like the gap was too big,” Larson said. “I was just stuck inside and just doing everything I could to advance our lane and maybe open it up to where I then could get to the outside. But we were all just pushing so equally that it kept the lanes jammed up.”

Noah Gragson ended up fourth in a Ford, while Hendrick driver Chase Elliott was fifth — two spots ahead of teammate Alex Bowman, with Carson Hocevar of Spire Motorsports sandwiched in between them. Wallace was the highest-finishing Toyota driver in eighth.

Cindric led five times but for only seven of the 188 laps in an unusually calm race for chaotic Talladega. The track last fall recorded the largest crash in the NASCAR history when 28 cars were collected in a demolition derby with four laps remaining.

On Sunday, there were only four cautions — two for stage breaks — totaling 22 laps. It was the fourth consecutive Talladega race with only four cautions, the two for stage breaks and the two for natural cautions.

But, Sunday featured season-highs in lead changes (67) among different drivers (23). Only five cars failed to finish from the 40-car field, and a whopping 30 drivers finished on the lead lap.

Cindric marked the 10th consecutive different winner at Talladega, extending the track record of no repeat winners. And, by the time it was over, Logano seemed to have calmed down.

“About time one of us wins these things,” Logano said of the Penske trio. “When you think about the amount of laps led by Team Penske and Ford in general, just haven’t been able to close. To see a couple of Fords on the front row duking it out, I wish one of them was me, in a selfish way. But it’s good to see those guys running up there and being able to click one off.”

Larson sets NASCAR record for stage wins

When he won the first stage at Talladega, it was the 67th of Larson’s career and made him NASCAR’s all-time stage winner. He broke a tie with Martin Truex Jr. with the stage win.

Stages were introduced in 2017 as a way to ensure natural breaks during races that allowed fans to rush to the bathroom or concession stand without missing any action. Cars typically make a pit stop during a stage break.

Teammate-on-teammate collision

Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin, who combined to win five of the first nine races this season, had a collision on a restart that ensured Bell would not win his fourth race of the season.

It happened in the first stage of the race with Bell on the front row next to Chris Buescher on his inside, and with Hamlin behind him. As the cars revved to get up to speed at the green flag, Hamlin ran into the back of Bell, which caused him to turn into Buescher and create the second caution of the race.

Bell went to the garage, where he joined Ryan Blaney, Buescher and Brad Keselowski, all betting favorites who were done for the day before the end of the first stage.

“What in the hell? Man, apologies if that’s on me,” Hamlin radioed. “We weren’t even up to speed yet. I don’t know why that would have wrecked him. When he shot down to the bottom, I wasn’t even sure I was actually on him.”

NASCAR races next week at Texas Motor Speedway, where Elliott scored his only win of the 2024 season last April.

CHICAGO — DePaul University announced a partnership with Spire Motorsports for the NASCAR Chicago Street Race. DePaul will serve as the primary sponsor of Michael McDowell’s No. 71 Chevrolet ZL1.

As part of the sponsorship, DePaul branding will be prominently featured on McDowell’s custom-designed No. 71 Chevy, his fire suit, pit road signage, and the Spire Motorsports crew shirts.

National visibility through broadcast, digital and social media, and in-person audiences will create a powerful platform to feature the university to new audiences.

“At DePaul, we view athletics as the front porch of the university — a powerful entry point that invites the world to engage with our university,” said DePaul Vice President and Director of Athletics DeWayne Peevy. “Partnering with Spire Motorsports for the NASCAR Chicago Street Race allows us to spotlight DePaul on a national stage while embracing a global event in our own backyard. Even more exciting, this collaboration will extend into our classrooms this fall, offering our students a hands-on look at the business and science behind professional racing. It’s the perfect example of how we’re using sports to elevate our visibility and create real-world learning experiences for our students.”

McDowell, a 17-year veteran of the NASCAR Cup Series with 518 starts, joined Spire Motorsports to pilot the No. 71 Chevrolet ZL1 ahead of the 2025 season.

“I’m really looking forward to Chicago,” said McDowell. “We’re coming off some great momentum on road courses, and to have a cornerstone of the city like DePaul University on our car for the weekend is special. Chicago is a great city, and NASCAR has built a fantastic racetrack. It’s not every day you get to race through the streets. With the city as the backdrop, it’s a unique experience and a real opportunity for us to have success with a new partner like DePaul.”

This partnership will extend well beyond the race weekend. Later this fall, students in DePaul’s Physics and Sport Management programs will benefit from exclusive engagement opportunities with members of the Spire Motorsports team, gaining firsthand insights into the high-performance, data-driven landscape of professional racing.

Toto Wolff reflects on humble beginnings as Red Bull Ring driving instructor: “Hand to mouth”

Toto Wolff is one of the longest-standing team principals on the Formula 1 grid. Usually watching from inside the Mercedes garage, Wolff looks at home within the hustle and bustle of motorsport. And while his headphones don’t always survive a race weekend, he’s been one of the most successful voices on the grid after he joined the sport in 2009.

But before he became a titan of both business and motorsport, the Austrian was an 18-year-old struggling to afford even the fuel for his SEAT Ibiza while he worked at the Österreichring, now named the Red Bull Ring.

“I used to work at the Red Bull Ring. It has always felt a bit like a second home,” he reflected via a release from Mercedes. “Back then it was known as the Österreichring. I was 18 years old, and a driving instructor.”

While chasing his own motorsport aspirations, the now-billionaire was working as a driving instructor at the track to fund his dreams.

“I was trying to make a living and finance my own driving career,” he continued. “The best part was always getting to shake down the cars at the end of the day when everyone else had gone home.”

1991 was a big year for motorsport in the country. The now-famous circuit had been removed from the F1 calendar due to safety concerns despite the 5.911-kilometre layout being famous for its challenging turns. But with the sport evolving and safety standards showing equal growth, it failed to make the cut.

But while F1 was out, other motorsports continued at the famous venue, allowing it to live on with the Austrian Superbike Championship being a favourite for track-goers.

Wolff struggled financially despite his tenacity.

“I would sleep in a farmhouse near to the track while I was doing the instructing, the people were super lovely and friendly,” he said. “I would drive back and forth between Vienna in those days, in my SEAT Ibiza. I could barely afford the fuel.”

While also continuing his education at Vienna University, this was a challenging time for the team chief.

“Yeah, hand to mouth because I had no financial support from home. I tried to make the uni, so-so and I got the offer from the best Formula Ford team back in the day to work as an instructor on the old Spielberg.”

His excitement for motorsport stemmed from a friend of his, who was driving in the German Formula 3 Championship at the time.

“I was with some friends, we were visiting Amsterdam, don’t ask why, and we were driving back and passing the Nurburgring.

“One of my dear friends was one of the frontrunners in the German Formula 3 Championship back in the time and I was fascinated by the environment, loved cars and drivers and decided I wanted to give it a go.

“I found out about everything and decided to buy myself a SEAT Ibiza, a tiny little SEAT car. I could make it with my pocket money and earning a little bit extra.

“I could just make the monthly leasing rates and I started to race the car. Sold my road car, raced the car and drove it on the road. This is how my racing started.”

The LiUNA 150 is heading to Lime Rock Park this weekend, attracting thousands of attendees. For state officials, keeping them safe is top of mind.

SALISBURY, Conn — Thousands of NASCAR fans are heading to Lime Rock Park in Salisbury this Friday and Saturday, and among them are hundreds of volunteers.

The LiUNA 150 Race weekend will feature the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ first road-course test of the 2025 season. Road-course racer Thomas Annunziata, who has made select Xfinity Series starts this season, will make his Truck Series debut driving the No. 07 Chevrolet for Spire Motorsports.

See the Craftsman Truck Series race lineup here.

Starting Thursday, ahead of the race, will be the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Hauler Parade and Fan Fest at the White Hart Inn. Attendees can get front-row seats as about 40 NASCAR haulers make their way through the streets, bringing the energy of the race to the community.

Learn more about the parade and fan fest here.

With these festivities also comes the need to ensure that attendees and residents of the town remain safe throughout the weekend, and hundreds of volunteers are set to assist.

The volunteers are with various state agencies, and race organizers plan for the large motorsport event, ensuring attendees will be safe and enjoy their time.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) said that their Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS), along with the park, local municipal leaders, and first responders, members of various agencies, have been working for the past six months ahead of the nationally televised NASCAR races on Friday and Saturday.

Gov. Ned Lamont said Lime Rock is an “Extraordinary place” and one of the state’s treasured resources, and is “pleased” to see so many volunteers come together to make the event a success.

“From Paul Newman to a roster of race car royalty, Lime Rock has a rich history that has justifiably placed it on the National Register of Historic Places,” Lamont said.

The event brings together the state’s Department of Energy and Enviromental Protection (DEEP), physicians from UConn Health – which will be on site, specialized resources from DEMHS’s Joint Hazard Assessment Team, the drone detection unit from the Connecticut State Police, and other volunteer first responders from surrounding communities such as Sharon, Falls Village, Cornwall, Salisbury, Kent, and North Canaan.

As many as 150 emergency responders from the area will be assisting with the event.

“It’s really going to be all hands on deck that weekend,” said Nicole Velardi, a DEMHS emergency management area coordinator. “Most of the agencies there are volunteers. The safety of the people on the campus and in the surrounding area is the utmost concern.

Now in its 50th year, the Pro Motocross Championship remains a cornerstone of the SuperMotocross (SMX) World Championship season. Honda’s sponsorship of RedBud marks a continuation of its alignment with one of the sport’s most celebrated rounds, traditionally held during Independence Day weekend at RedBud MX in Buchanan, Michigan.

“Honda and RedBud are a dream pairing. RedBud is arguably the crown jewel of Pro Motocross, and we’re thrilled to celebrate the Fourth of July with the most passionate fans in the sport.” — Brandon Wilson, American Honda’s Manager of Racing & Advertising

This year’s Honda RedBud National will also welcome a motorsports legend to the festivities. Toni Bou, the 37-time FIM Trials World Champion, will serve as Grand Marshal and headline a trials exhibition alongside teammate Gabriel Moncelli aboard Montesa Honda Cota 4RT machines. The appearance comes just ahead of the TrialGP round in Rhode Island and marks a rare crossover moment between motocross and trials disciplines.

On the track, Team Honda HRC Progressive has made a strong start in 2025, with Jett Lawrence dominating the 450 Class through the first four rounds. The team has also continued a streak of success at Honda-sponsored events dating back to 2022, including wins at Fox Raceway and Unadilla.

As Honda enters another chapter with the Pro Motocross Championship, industry leaders are welcoming the renewed partnership. “Honda has been an anchor brand in motocross for decades,” says Davey Coombs, president of MX Sports Pro Racing. “Their support is not only a nod to history, but also a commitment to the future of powersports. We’re also honored to spotlight Toni Bou—he is quite literally the greatest of all time in trials.”

For powersports dealers, the announcement highlights Honda’s ongoing commitment to both motorsports and brand visibility. The national spotlight on RedBud, combined with the presence of global icons like Bou, presents an opportunity to engage riders and fans alike with a legendary brand that continues to evolve.

Longtime NHMS Supporter E.J. Prescott, Inc. Adds Name to NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Playoff Race | News | Media

New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) today announced that its longest-standing partner, E.J. Prescott, Inc. (Team EJP), will serve as the title sponsor of the Team EJP 175 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series (NCTS) playoff race on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025 and multiple years to come. “My father Peter has been involved with New Hampshire Motor Speedway […]

“My father Peter has been involved with New Hampshire Motor Speedway since the first shovel went into the ground,” said third-generation E.J. Prescott, Inc., President and CEO Steven Prescott. “I am proud to say that since the first NASCAR event at NHMS in 1990, the Prescott family has never missed a NASCAR event at the speedway. We are so excited not only to be a part of the return of the Truck Series to NHMS, but also to have our company’s name on the Team EJP 175.”

Under Peter’s leadership, Team EJP has been deeply involved with “The Magic Mile” and NASCAR for decades, holding the oldest active ticket account and standing as the longest partnership in NHMS history. E.J. Prescott, Inc. provided all the materials for the water, wastewater and stormwater systems at the facility, and several of the employees, Steven included, spent time at NHMS installing and servicing the infrastructure.

“We are absolutely thrilled to put Team EJP’s name on our NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series playoff race,” said New Hampshire Motor Speedway Executive Vice President and General Manager David McGrath. “Peter Prescott worked closely with the Bahre family to build New Hampshire International Speedway and played an important role in making New Hampshire Motor Speedway what it is today, and it’s exciting to see Steven continue to carry that torch.”

Through the years of NASCAR involvement, with Peter either owning or sponsoring a team, Team EJP Racing has played an important role in the career development of stars like Steve Park, Kevin LePage, Ricky Craven, Andy Santerre and Denny Hamlin. Steven tried his hand at racing for his father in the Legend Car Series (1993-98), picking up more than 30 feature wins as well as track and series titles. He also raced on the PRO Tour truck series (1997-99), picking up 17 poles and enjoying 19 victory lane celebrations and back-to-back series titles (1998 and 1999). In 2000, he made three starts in the NCTS behind the wheel of the family-owned No. 03 Chevrolet Silverado; one of those being at “The Magic Mile.” He then stepped down as driver for Team EJP Racing and became team owner until 2005, always remaining an active part of the team. Now under Steven’s leadership, Team EJP has continued to help local, regional and national touring series drivers through sponsorship.

“NHMS and racing in general has meant so much to my family over the years,” said Prescott. “I am honored to have this opportunity to not only continue what my grandfather Everett and my father Peter started, but also to engrain our whole team into the excitement of New England’s only NASCAR Playoffs weekend. I can’t think of a better or more exciting way to celebrate our 70th anniversary.”

Through the partnership, Team EJP will receive a multitude of assets, including the ability to host customers and employees throughout the event weekend, offering them unique experiences such as being named the Grand Marshal or Honorary Starter of the race, as well as signage throughout the property.

The NCTS last raced at NHMS in September 2017. This year’s Team EJP 175 will be the 21st NCTS event overall at NHMS’s flat 1.058-mile oval and is a critical stop in the NCTS playoffs, as the field of championship contenders will be reduced from 10 to eight after the event.

The Team EJP 175 NCTS playoff race at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 is one of three NASCAR races at “The Magic Mile” from Sept. 19-21. It will be preceded on Doubleheader Saturday by the Mohegan Sun 100 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT) race at 9:15 a.m. and followed by the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) playoff race at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21.
