Williamsburg earns top seed in softball draw

Williamsburg’s hot start to the 2025 season, when it raced out to a 13-0 record, helped cement the Ladycats as the top seed in the Division V, Region 20, Southwest 1 bracket.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its softball tournament draw May 4. The state championships will take place June 4-8 at Firestone Stadium in Akron.

The Ladycats (16-3) will host No. 13-seeded Mariemont (3-11) at 5 p.m. May 12 at Williamsburg High School in the bracket’s opening round. The winner will play 10-seeded Georgetown (4-14) in the second round at 5 p.m. May 14. That game could be at Williamsburg before neutral-site play takes effect.

The Ladycats have the easiest route through the district. The highest-seeded team they could play is Miami East (15-3), the No. 2-ranked team in the bracket and reigning Southwest 1 District champion, which beat Williamsburg in last season’s district championship game. A potential district final rematch would be May 22 at a neutral site.

The Ladycats, who are on their way to a National Division title, are 9-1 in the division. Their lone defeat came against Bethel-Tate (7-2, 9-7), which is the No. 2 seed in the Division V, Southwest 3 bracket. The Lady Tigers have won four straight and seven of their last nine after opening the season with a 2-5 start.

Bethel-Tate opens its tournament play against 14-seeded Finneytown (0-10) at 5 p.m. May 14 at Bethel-Tate High School. The winner will play the winner between No. 3 Reading (14-4) and No. 13 Clark Montessori (1-10) in a district semifinal at 5 p.m. May 19 in a location to be announced. The Lady Tigers are the reigning Southwest 2 District champions.

Recapping the best moments from East Texas high school sports in 2024

East Texas athletes dominated the sports scene this past school year.

TYLER, Texas — East Texans, you did your thing this year on a record-breaking scale.

After this year, no coach can touch Carthage’s Scott Surratt after he won his 10th state championship.

Down in Martin’s Mill, Jak Kinder set the Texas record for all-time three pointers made. Then the Martin’s Mill basketball program didn’t settle at just one basketball championship. Both the boy’s and girl’s teams became state champions.

Tatum followed that up and the legend of the Bradley name grew that much more.

Remember when Longview running back Kelvin Washington broke the single season rushing touchdown record then just kept scoring touchdowns? He played a huge role in the Lobos deep playoff run in 2024.

The only guys faster than Washington were on the Lindale track team, who scorched everyone on their way to state championship glory.

Those Overton Mustangs had a dream baseball season going from a .500 team in 2024 to a state champion contender in 2025.

And Spring Hill finally got the monkey off their back in 2025. Business went from unfinished business to the top of the mountain and the 11 seniors on the team get to ride off into the sunset with a state championship.

So take a rest now East Texas, because we do it all again in just a few months.

Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball: The Sheridan Troopers went 5-0 this past weekend to win the Black Hills Veterans Classic in Rapid City, and beat the host team, Post 22 in the championship game.

Head Coach Austin Cowen says that’s the best 5 games the team has played so far this season.

Today the team starts conference play at defending state champ Cheyenne Post 6 beginning at 5 and 7pm, and play 2 against the Cheyenne Hawks tomorrow, then return home Sunday to face Casper.

For the better part of April and May, the Troopers usually play like it’s spring training, but Griffin Switzenberg says now it’s time to get real and players set a good example this past weekend.

This coming Thursday and Friday, the team will host its annual Baseball Camp and Whiffleball Tournament for those ages 7-14.

Events run from 9am until 12-noon at Thorne Rider Stadium.

You can visit the Sheridan Legion Baseball Facebook page to register.

On Sunday, it’s Little League Night at the Troopers’ game.

Teams and players will be recognized and get to run the bases in between games.

Colorado Rockies Baseball: The Colorado Rockies were off yesterday and will start a 3-game series today at home vs. San Francisco.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:40pm.

NHL Stanley Cup Finals: Florida dominated Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals last night at home vs. Edmonton 6-1, to take a 2-games-to-1 series lead.

There was a pilot program last year with four teams, a 12-game regular season and a championship game at TCO Stadium. This season had a major jump in participation with 51 high schools competing, thanks to a $600,000 contribution from the Vikings.

Twelve schools qualified for the 2025 state championship tournament on Monday. Games began at 2 p.m. and ran through the evening until a state champion was crowned.

Mahtomedi advanced to the championship game after routing Park of Cottage Grove 32-0 in the semifinals, while La Crescent-Hokah beat Centennial 24-6 in its semifinal game.

The first half of the championship game had plenty of offense, as La Crescent-Hokah took a 20-18 lead into the second half. However, Mahtomedi took control of the game by holding La Crescent-Hokah scoreless and putting up three touchdowns in the second half.

Sophia Peer scored four touchdowns for the Zephyrs and had two interceptions in the second half.

Mahtomedi claimed the championship game 36-20, becoming the first state champions in a field of more than four teams.

Journalist Terry Moran's suspension highlights ongoing tension between ABC and Trump

ABC News has suspended veteran journalist Terry Moran following a controversial social media post criticizing the Trump administration. The post, published early Sunday morning, targeted top Trump aide Stephen Miller, calling him “a world-class hater” and stating “his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment.” Moran also labeled President Trump as a “world-class hater.”

In response to Moran’s comments, Vice President J.D. Vance urged the public to “remember that every time you watch ABC’s coverage of the Trump administration.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on the situation, saying, “This is again coming from someone who is supposed to be an unbiased and professional journalist.” She added, “I think this speaks to the distrust that the American public has in the legacy media.”

ABC swiftly suspended Moran, releasing a statement that the network “stands for objectivity and impartiality in its news coverage and does not condone subjective personal attacks on others.”

This incident follows a tense interview last month between Moran and President Trump in the Oval Office, where Trump accused Moran of being dishonest. Additionally, ABC News recently agreed to pay $15 million to the Trump Presidential Library to settle a defamation lawsuit over inaccurate comments made by anchor George Stephanopoulos against President Trump. CBS is also facing a lawsuit by Trump for alleged deceptive editing of an interview with then-candidate Kamala Harris, with negotiations for a possible multi-million dollar settlement underway.

The conservative watchdog site Media Research Center conducted a review in April, finding that the Trump administration received 92% negative coverage from ABC, NBC, and CBS.
