Williamsburg’s hot start to the 2025 season, when it raced out to a 13-0 record, helped cement the Ladycats as the top seed in the Division V, Region 20, Southwest 1 bracket.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its softball tournament draw May 4. The state championships will take place June 4-8 at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
The Ladycats (16-3) will host No. 13-seeded Mariemont (3-11) at 5 p.m. May 12 at Williamsburg High School in the bracket’s opening round. The winner will play 10-seeded Georgetown (4-14) in the second round at 5 p.m. May 14. That game could be at Williamsburg before neutral-site play takes effect.
The Ladycats have the easiest route through the district. The highest-seeded team they could play is Miami East (15-3), the No. 2-ranked team in the bracket and reigning Southwest 1 District champion, which beat Williamsburg in last season’s district championship game. A potential district final rematch would be May 22 at a neutral site.
The Ladycats, who are on their way to a National Division title, are 9-1 in the division. Their lone defeat came against Bethel-Tate (7-2, 9-7), which is the No. 2 seed in the Division V, Southwest 3 bracket. The Lady Tigers have won four straight and seven of their last nine after opening the season with a 2-5 start.
Bethel-Tate opens its tournament play against 14-seeded Finneytown (0-10) at 5 p.m. May 14 at Bethel-Tate High School. The winner will play the winner between No. 3 Reading (14-4) and No. 13 Clark Montessori (1-10) in a district semifinal at 5 p.m. May 19 in a location to be announced. The Lady Tigers are the reigning Southwest 2 District champions.

Waukee CSD athletes wrapped up an exciting spring season! We’re proud to recognize their efforts and success. Take a look at the highlights from spring varsity sports at Waukee High School and Northwest High School:
Tennis
The NWHS girls tennis team claimed their very first state title in team tennis! The Wolves also had their best showing for the individual tournament in school history.
- 2nd place doubles: Mia Deines/London Taylor
- 5th place singles: Riley Hilton
- 8th place doubles: Ella Steffensmeier/Kate Osier
The Northwest boys tennis team earned another team state title for the second year in a row.
- 3rd place singles: Jake Nelson
- 4th place singles: Kellan Croatt
- 4th place doubles: Vivek Kothari/Maarten Beekhuis
- 5th place doubles: Drew Fenton/Vincent Flynn
NWHS had two entires in the coed state tennis tournament. The Wolves earned both first and second place!
- Coed State Champs – London Taylor and Jake Nelson
- Coed State Runner-up – Riley Hilton and Kellen Croatt
Girls Golf
NWHS finished off their great season as runner-up at the state meet, losing in the championship by just one stroke.
NWHS students Adalyn Wiig, Kendall Curran, and Hannah Kenkel were named to the All-District Team.
Soccer
WHS and NWHS punched their tickets to the girls’ state soccer tournament, meeting in a semifinal matchup. Northwest edged Waukee 1-0 to advance, then went on to defeat Linn-Mar 3-2 in the championship to claim the Class 3A state title.
Both teams were well represented on the Class 3A all-tournament team. Northwest had five players selected: Grace Thomason, Lindsay Shane, Josie Jones (named captain), Romey Croatt and Izzy Simonini, while Waukee had two players named to the honorary team: Stella Braddock and Lauren Nidey.
Track & Field
Our track and field programs had an impressive season. The NWHS girls team claimed the 4A State Team Title for the third time in four years! There were also six relay winners:
- 800m Sprint Medley Relay
- 1600m Sprint Medley Relay
- 4x100m Relay
- 4x200m Relay
- 4x100m Shuttle Hurdle Relay
- 4x400m Relay
The NWHS boys and girls teams had a great showing at the Drake Relays:
- NWHS Boys Shuttle Hurdle — Drake Relays record, school record, & all-time Iowa best
- NWHS Girls 4×400 and 4×200 — fourth straight title in the 4×200
- NWHS Girls Shuttle Hurdle — Drake Relays record
- NWHS Girls 4×100 — second consecutive title and a Drake Relays record
- NWHS won the first-ever mixed 4×400
The NWHS girls team also won the Drake Relays Cup as the best girls team.
The WHS boys team placed 13th and the girls team placed 11th at the state meet. Both teams broke several school records:
- WHS Boys Shuttle Hurdle Relay — 59.31 – Tavian White, Cal Meisner, Lucas Peterson, Noah Hinrichs
- WHS Boys Distance Medley Relay — 3:27.75 – Tavian White, Alvin Grier, Jayden Jeter, Jonas VanDis
- WHS Boys 3200m — 9:09.12 – Jonas VanDis
- WHS Girls 4x100m Relay — 48.04 – Lena Bruening, Estelle Hinke, Gentry Williams, Jana Maharry
- WHS Girls Long Jump — 18’5″ – Lena Bruening
Esports
The WHS Esports League of Legends team finished as runner-up in the State Spring Showdown.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing is celebrating Homeownership Month by offering essential advice to help first-time homebuyers make confident, informed decisions.
“Becoming a homeowner is an incredibly exciting time in someone’s life, but preparation is key to making sure this process goes smoothly for homebuyers,” Division Superintendent Daphne Hawk said. “Because purchasing a home is likely the largest investment many individuals will ever make during their lifetimes, our goal is to make sure buyers are not only excited about owning a home but also educated as they take this important step.”
Here are the top three tips and red flags new homebuyers should keep in mind as they begin their homebuying journey:
Top Three Tips for First-Time Homebuyers
- Set a Realistic Budget: Before house hunting, take a close look at your finances. Consider not only your mortgage but also additional expenses like insurance, property taxes, and ongoing maintenance. Securing preapproval from a lender can help clarify your price range and strengthen your offers.
- Do Thorough Research: Look beyond aesthetics by researching neighborhoods, schools, and property values. By choosing a home that aligns with your current lifestyle and future goals, you can help ensure you make a sound long-term investment. Take advantage of tools like Ohio’s Homebuyers Guide and fair housing resources. These resources can help you understand how the real estate transaction process works and how you can properly prepare for each step.
- Don’t Skip the Home Inspection: An inspection can reveal critical issues you might otherwise miss, saving you future headaches and large repair bills. Avoid the temptation to skip this step in order to speed along the transaction since you may end up regretting that decision.
Top Three Red Flags for First-Time Homebuyers
- Unlicensed Individuals: Always verify the credentials of an agent or broker before you engage them since unlicensed individuals may lack the expertise and accountability needed to properly guide your home purchase. Working with a buyer’s agent is strongly encouraged to ensure they prioritize your best interests. For example, if attending an open house without a buyer’s agent, keep in mind that the listing agent represents the seller. By avoiding sharing sensitive details like your budget or timeline, you can protect your negotiating power. If you’re working with a buyer’s agent, discuss attending open houses with them in advance.
- Insufficient Property Disclosures: Be wary of incomplete information about a home’s condition since missing or vague disclosures could signal hidden problems. It’s important to ask the seller and their agent as many questions about the condition of the property or other facts about the property that may influence your decision to make an offer to purchase.
- Fraudulent Listings: Exercise caution if you see homes listed on social media sites or other nontraditional platforms. It is possible that the home listed on those platforms may not even be for sale. Watch out for potential scammers who refuse to meet in person or via a video call, are willing to sell fast, and have an asking price below market value.

For the past year, the Star Local Media sports staff has spent all but a small handful of Tuesday and Friday nights, plus the occasional Thursday or Saturday, bound to a press box, on the sidelines or in the bleachers covering high school sports.
Reporting on dramatic comebacks, crazy finishes and highlight-reel performances can become commonplace in an area as talented as the Metroplex, and there was no shortage of memorable outings throughout the school year.

WATERTOWN, NY — A pair of Watertown High School seniors were honored Wednesday evening as the top graduating athletes and recipients of the William I. Graf Award. Samantha G. Booth was selected as the women’s recipients and Jack Adams was named as the men’s honoree this year.
The Italian-American Civic Association created the William I. Graf Award in 1954 to honor Mr. Graf’s leadership and civic engagement in the community. The Northern New York Community Foundation was selected to help continue the Graf family legacy by administering an associated scholarship fund in perpetuity and raising awareness of the award for students who strive to earn the prestigious honor.
Mr. Graf was a multi-sport coach and athletic director at Watertown High School. Graf Award honorees are expected to have participated in at least two or more varsity sports in their senior year and demonstrate exceptional character and sportsmanship, discipline, fair play, training, athletic ability, and academics.
The Graf Award was first presented to both a male and female athlete in 1977; from 1954 to 1976 the honor was only awarded to the top graduating male athlete. From 1954 to 1979, the Graf Award was also presented to the top graduating athletes at Immaculate Heart Academy/Immaculate Heart Central.
About the recipients
Samantha G. Booth is a standout three-sport varsity athlete, competing for six years in tennis, four years in basketball, and two years in golf at Immaculate Heart Central. At Watertown High, she also managed the boys varsity tennis team. Samantha is a multi-year New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Scholar Athlete.
In varsity tennis, Samantha competed on the Cyclones’ girls team in the fall and managed the varsity boys team in the spring. She is a five-time Frontier League All-Star, a five-time Frontier League Match Champion, a four-time Sectional Semifinalist, a two-time State Qualifier, and a 2024 Division I AA State Qualifier, a first in more than 30 years for a Watertown High player. She also served as a team captain.
As a varsity basketball player, she is a three-time Frontier League All-Star, a CNY Block Leader, a two-time Sectional finalist, and served as a team captain.
On the golf course, Samantha is a two-time Frontier League Match Champion, a two-time Sectional semifinalist and a two-time State Qualifier. She also holds the record for undefeated matches at Immaculate Heart Central.
Samantha was named a WWNY-TV7 North Country Athlete of the Week three times. During her senior year, she served as on the Section III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (Sportsmanship). Off the athletic field, Samantha is a top-ranked honor student and two-year National Honor Society member, serving as chapter vice president her senior year. A class officer, she served as class president her freshman year and as Student Council secretary her senior year. Samantha participated in numerous extracurricular clubs and activities, including the WHS Cyclones Booster Club and Whiz Quiz. She is also active in her community and church, logging more than 300 volunteer hours over six years with Faith Community Service, and volunteering for the past nine years with the American Cancer Society. Additionally, Samantha was crowned Miss Italia Queen in 2022 and served as a volunteer youth tennis coach.
Samantha will graduate this month with a New York State Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. She will attend Creighton University this fall where she plans to study psychology on a pre-med track with a minor in behavioral cognitive neuroscience. She will also be part of a research study on Alzheimer’s Disease as a freshman. She aspires to practice medicine as a psychiatrist. Samantha is the daughter of Laureen and Sam Booth, Watertown.
Jack Adams is an accomplished two-sport varsity athlete, competing for four years on the varsity basketball and lacrosse teams. As a freshman, Jack competed in junior varsity soccer and served as a team captain.
He is a multi-year New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Scholar Athlete.
As a junior varsity soccer player, Jack served as team captain his freshman year.
As a Cyclones varsity basketball player, Jack was a team captain his junior and senior years. He earned Frontier League All-Star Honorable Mention his freshman year and was named a Frontier League All-Star his sophomore, junior, and senior years.
In his junior year, he was named to the Watertown Daily Times All North First Team and earned All North Honorable Mention his sophomore year. He was also named to the All CNY First Team his senior year and earned All CNY Team Honorable Mention in his junior year. He was named to the All State Class AA 6th Team his senior year.
He joined a group of seven Cyclones players in the history of the program to reach more than 1,000 points and holds the school record for the total assists through his high school career.
As a varsity lacrosse competitor, he is a three-time Frontier League All Star, earned All Star Honorable Mention his freshman year, and was named to the Watertown Daily Times All North Second Team his sophomore year. As a junior, he was named as the Times’ All North Lacrosse MVP and earned All CNY Second Team honors. He was also named to the All State Lacrosse Class B 6th Team his junior year. Jack was a team captain his junior and senior years.
In his junior year he was selected by the Watertown athletic director to serve as a student representative at the Section III Student Athlete Leadership Conference. This year, Jack was named an Academic All American for lacrosse.
Off the athletic field, Jack is a top-ranked honor student and two-year National Honor Society member who participated in numerous extracurricular clubs and activities, including the WHS Cyclones Booster Club, Rotary Interact Club, and the Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Council. He is also active in his community, serving as a volunteer youth couch and a peer mentor for H.T. Wiley Intermediate School students.
Jack will graduate this month with a New York State Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. He will attend Le Moyne College this fall where he plans to study business and continue his athletic career as a member of the Dolphins NCAA Division I lacrosse team. He aspires to work in finance. Jack is the son of Amy and Ed Adams, Watertown.
