SANTA CLARA —  Robert Saleh is ready to work with the six defensive members of the 49ers’ 2025 rookie class, who all have a chance to earn playing time during the 2025 NFL season.

“Excited to get them out there this weekend for sure,” Saleh said during his first press conference with local media on Thursday. “Really cool group of kids that are coming in. All of them are going to have an opportunity to compete to get significant playing time this year.

“It’s exciting to just get the injection of youth along with a lot of the veterans we have on this football team. It’s exciting, it’s going to be a lot of fun to work with them.”

The 49ers’ defense struggled through a 6-11 2024 season, but Saleh believes there wasn’t one element of the game that caused the downturn of the once-vaunted group. He’s confident that one remedy will be San Francisco’s talented group of rookies stepping on the field this week.

“I think it’s going to come just with all the youth,” Saleh said of what will improve the defense’s performance. “There’s a lot of empathy for what happened to the group last year. There are a lot of things. Through the halfway point, this defense was playing some really good football and there were a lot of injuries and the wheels kind of fell off during the last few weeks of the season.

“So for the coaching staff and the players, there is a lot of empathy, ‘Man, you were doing your best. It just didn’t work out.’ But you still see it all. These guys played their butts off. I thought Nick [Bosa] and those guys did a really nice job and it’s just bringing in this youth and getting them caught up to what the standard is and doing our best to uphold it.”

Part of what could help the 49ers’ defense are the three defensive linemen they drafted in Mykell Williams, Alfred Collins and C.J. West. San Francisco has been searching for a bookend for Bosa as well as players who can consistently stop the run. They believe that the answer could be in part, Collins and West.

Saleh added that one of the reasons he returned to the Bay Area as a coordinator was the collaboration that led to the 49ers’ first five picks of the 2025 NFL Draft falling on the defensive side of the ball.

Without naming names, the former New York Jets head coach emphasized that very few organizations have the same process the 49ers do when it comes to reaching a consensus on their draft board.

“That was the other reason why it was exciting to come back,” Saleh said. “Most buildings, maybe spend a week in terms of communication between [the] scouting department and coaching staff, with regards to the draft.

“This organization will spend 3-4 weeks just grinding on tape, offense, defense, special teams and going deep into the seventh round, undrafted free-agent type players. And I think that’s why this organization has so much success finding Day 3 picks that come to fruition. Even undrafted free agents that end up having success in this league.”

Saleh explained that plenty of offensive players with higher draft grades came off the board before the 49ers had a chance to select them, but he will nevertheless take all of the talented defenders he can get.

Cardi B Surprises Stefon Diggs’ Youth Football Camp In Maryland

Cardi B has all the reason in the world to want to hole up and not deal with the outside world. A nasty divorce from the father of her kids, Offset, adds onto big career pressures and the trappings of fame. But love makes it all worth it, and she’s been having a great time with NFL star Stefon Diggs.

The couple recently went public, and according to AllHipHop, they are supporting each other’s endeavors whenever they can. The New York femcee recently popped out at the Diggs Day Football Camp in College Park, Maryland on Saturday (June 7).

The youth-focused community event takes place annually at the University of Maryland, the state native’s alma mater. Diggs gives local children, coaches, and community leaders opportunities to connect, hone their skills, and come together in the name of good sportsmanship, skill, growth, and camaraderie.

Michael Locksley, the University of Maryland’s football head coach for the Terrapins, posted a picture with Cardi on social media. “Welcome to #Terpsville @iamcardib @TerpsFootball #DiggsDay #Stef #Elevate,” he captioned the post. It was a surprise for most everyone involved, although she didn’t speak or take over the event or anything like that. Instead, Cardi was just there to support, which is always wholesome to see.

Cardi B “Outside” Song

Stefon Diggs is playing big for the New England Patriots these days, so the NFL wide receiver also uses his youth football camp to stay in community with his roots. Diggs Day’s focus on mentoring the next generation of athletes and community leaders through training drills and motivational exchanges will likely be one of his longest-lasting legacies.

Elsewhere, though, Cardi B took a break from the drama. This football camp outing paused her ongoing conflicts with Offset over their nasty public break-up and divorce proceedings.

In fact, it seems like this might even spill over onto wax. Cardi recently teased a track on social media that most fans are referring to as “Outside.” In it, she references men who “f**k on anything” and talks about being cuffed for too long, which seems to allude to the former Migo. We’ll see how that plays out moving forward…

Not only was he a 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year finalist while breaking a 63-year-old NFL record for most receiving hards by a rookie tight end, but Bowers has also made an impression on our youth.

“He’s a really nice guy,” Vegas local Davian said. “He’s really good at catching, and I think that the Raiders can make it to the playoffs just with him.”

Bowers tried to set a good example both on and off the field with this mentality in mind.

“Just doing your best in whatever you choose to do, whether it’s football or anything in life, if it’s a sport or not, just really committing yourself and doing the best you can,” Bowers said.

San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie hosted his youth basketball skills camp at the Los Fresnos United School in Los Fresnos.

85 kids registered for the camp that started at 12 p.m. and ended 4 p.m. They went through fundamental skills, dribbling, shooting and passing. The campers ended the day with a 5v5 game having the chance to go up against Champagnie.

Channel 5 news asked him about the importance of bringing these camps to the Valley.

“It’s super important because there aren’t any NBA games down here. I think we’re the closest ones out of the three Texas teams so coming out here is super important giving the kids something to look forward too and someone to look up too,” said Champagnie.

He also said he would love to come back out here and hopes to be here as soon as August.

We wish them well as they take their talents to the college level.”

The Wooden/MCL Citizenship Awards have been presented to one All-Star boy and one All-Star girl annually since 1992. The awards are named for the late John Wooden, an outstanding player at Martinsville High School and Purdue University and later a 10-time NCAA championship coach at UCLA.

Wooden said when the award was established in 1992 –

“Since I am a strong believer in academic and citizenship awards, I am honored that MCL desires to use my name for this honor.”

MCL Restaurant & Bakery, based in Indianapolis, has sponsored the Wooden Citizenship Award for all 33 years that it has been presented.
