But this year, the crowds are noticeably thinner. Keen to bring them back, Seattle is offering a hefty discount — in hopes of reviving the cross-border tradition during three games this weekend against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
Iconic seafood restaurant Ivar’s, the Space Needle and the Pacific Science Center are among dozens of businesses participating in the promotion that accepts Canadian dollars at par all weekend. With the loonie worth just 72 U.S. cents, that effectively gives visitors who show Canadian IDs about a 30% discount.
“I think we’re earning goodwill, which is what we wanted with our neighbours,” said Ivar’s founder Bob Donegan. “But we are not seeing a significant increase in the number of Blue Jay fans coming to Seattle.”

At the Blaine, Washington border crossing, a major entry point for visitors from Vancouver, southbound traffic was down 52% in the first two weeks of April compared to the same period last year. Passenger arrivals on Air Canada flights to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport dropped 66% in March.
Canadians cite frustration with U.S. policies under President Donald Trump, including tariffs and his repeated suggestion that Canada should become the 51st state. Other travelers are avoiding the U.S. over fears of being detained or pulled aside for questioning at the border as part the Trump administration’s broader immigration crackdown.
Adding to the strain, Canada’s economy is showing signs of weakness. Data released Friday showed the country’s unemployment rate rose to 6.9% in April amid job losses in sectors like manufacturing that are affected by tariffs.

The program to accept Canadian currency, called “Open Arms for Our Canadian Friends,” includes hotels, restaurants and even transportation companies like FRS Clipper, a boat service between Seattle and Victoria, British Columbia, as well as Kenmore Air, which runs seaplanes between Washington State and western Canada.
Even with this effort, Donegan said that looking out his window on Friday, he saw none of the signature Blue Jays ballcaps that typically swarm the area during the games.
He also said interviews that he’s done with Vancouver radio stations in recent days have been followed by angry fans calling in to say they’re “so irritated with the American policy that they are not coming to town.”
“They’re typically delightfully goofy Canadians who are so friendly and so focused,” Donegan said. “So we miss them a lot.”

Media giant Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has announced it will be splitting into two publicly-traded companies, in a major development for one of the world’s premier broadcasters.
The new Streaming and Studios company will consist of Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, as well as DC Studios, HBO, and HBO Max. The Global Networks creation, meanwhile, will “include premier entertainment, sports, and news television brands around the world,” including TNT Sports in the US, Discovery, as well as the Discovery+ streaming service.
The separation of these two entities is expected to be complete by mid-2026, subject to final conditions such as final approval from the WBD board. David Zaslav, president and chief executive of WBD, will take those same roles in Streaming & Studios, while Gunnar Wiedenfels, the company’s chief financial officer, will serve as president and chief executive for Global Networks.
Global Networks will hold a stake of up to 20% in Streaming & Studios, which it plans “to monetize in a tax-efficient manner.”
WBD has said the restructuring will enable each company to “be more agile” and will also equip each to be “faster and more aggressive.”
An initial restructuring plan around separating the WBD business into linear TV and streaming units was unveiled last December.
WBD’s Eurosport linear service is one of Europe’s main sports broadcasters, while it also owns the TNT Sports brand in Latin America, the US, and the UK and Ireland (in the UK and Ireland, it is a 50% venture with BT Group). In addition, both Discovery+ and HBO Max cover a wide range of sports, with HBO Max now available in 77 markets (with other launches planned for 2026).
In mid-May, reports emerged suggesting that BT was considering selling its 50% stake in TNT Sports UK to WBD, with the latter partner reportedly holding an option to take full control that runs until next September.
Zaslav has commented: “By operating as two distinct and optimized companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today’s evolving media landscape.”
Wiedenfels added: “At Global Networks, we will focus on further identifying innovative ways to work with distribution partners to create value for both linear and streaming viewers globally while maximizing our network assets and driving free cash flow.”
In terms of sports rights, late last week, it was announced that WBD will continue to provide live coverage of the Roland-Garros French Open grand slam tennis tournament across Europe until at least 2030, after extending its rights contract.
WBD currently holds a range of rights in Europe covering all four tennis Grand Slams.

Apple has launched at its WWDC 2025 conference Workout Buddy, an AI workout coach. The AI tool gathers data from both your current workout and your fitness history — including paces, miles logged, activity rings closed, and training load — to coach you through workouts in real time.
Combined with Apple Intelligence on the iPhone, Workout Buddy relies on a text-to-speech model to translate encouragement into a fun generative voice that sounds like a fitness trainer. In fact, the generative voice is built using voice data from Fitness+ trainers — the people who lead workouts within Apple’s Fitness+ app and studio. Users can choose from multiple voices to find the right one for them.
The Workout app on the Apple Watch and iPhone will also update so it kicks off with a pep talk once you start on a run. It will also mark moments, like when you hit four miles, if your last mile was the fastest yet, and what your average heart rate is. At the end of the workout, the AI gives you a rundown of your average pace, heart rate, and whether you hit any additional milestones, like your first 10K run award.
Workout Buddy will be available starting in English across the most popular workout types.
As Apple has been reiterating during the entire WWDC, Workout Buddy is “personal and private.”
Additionally, Apple says it is giving the Workout app on the Apple Watch a new layout, with features like Custom Workout and Race Route “just a tap away.” There are also new media features built into the app for music. Users can let Apple Music choose the best playlist based on their workout or their preferences, or users can select playlists or podcasts suggested based on what they’ve been listening to or the type of workout.

NEW YORK (AP) — Warner Bros. Discovery will calve off cable operations from its streaming service, creating two independent companies as the number of people “cutting the cord” brings with it a sustained upheaval in the entertainment industry.
HBO, and HBO Max, as well as Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, will become part of the streaming and studios company, Warner Bros. said Monday.
The cable company will include CNN, TNT Sports in the U.S., and Discovery, top free-to-air channels across Europe, and digital products such as the Discovery+ streaming service and Bleacher Report.
Shares jumped 11% at the opening bell.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav will become serve as CEO of the company that for right now is called Streaming & Studios. Gunnar Wiedenfels, chief financial officer of Warner Bros. Discovery, will be CEO of the cable-focused entity, for now known as Global Networks.
“By operating as two distinct and optimized companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today’s evolving media landscape,” Zaslav said in a statement.
Just days ago Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders in a vote that was symbolic as it’s nonbinding, rejected the 2024 pay packages of some executives, including Zaslav, who will make more than $51 million.
Warner Bros. Discovery said in December that it was implementing a restructuring plan in which Warner Bros. Discovery would become the parent company for two operating divisions, Global Linear Networks and Streaming & Studios. That was seen as a preview of the separation announced Monday.
Warner Bros. Discovery was created just three years ago when AT&T spun off WarnerMedia and it was merged with Discovery Communications in a $43 billion deal.
The cable industry has been under assault for years from streaming services like Disney, Netflix, Amazon and Warner Bros. own HBO Max. The industry is also being pressured by internet plans offered by mobile phone companies. Comcast, which is of nearly equal size to Charter, spun off many of its cable television networks in November, seeing so many customers swap out their cable TV subscriptions for streaming platforms.
Last month Charter Communications offered to acquire Cox Communications, a $34.5 billion merger that would combine two of the top three cable companies in the U.S.
So-called “cord cutting” has cost the industry millions of customers and left them searching for ways to successfully compete.
The Warner Bros. Discovery split is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. It still needs final approval from the Warner Bros. Discovery board.

The evolution of goalkeeper gloves has hit new heights with Liverpool FC goalkeeper Alisson Becker breaking a record by winning the Premier League in Reusch gloves—marking the brand’s resurgence since his youth. The history of goalkeeper gloves dates back to the 1885 patent by William Sykes, evolving through technology and materials, with modern gloves now featuring innovative designs tailored for elite performance. Despite advancements, challenges persist, such as the limited options for women’s gloves and the high cost of quality pairs, which wear out quickly. The debate continues over training gloves’ efficacy, grip maintenance methods like using Vaseline, and the quest for sustainable glove materials, as some professionals struggle with glove durability and performance.
By the Numbers
Yes, But
While the advancement in glove technology benefits performance, the ongoing issue of limited tailored options for women’s gloves highlights a significant gap in the market that requires further attention and innovation.
State of Play
What’s Next
As the demand for better and more sustainable goalkeeper gloves grows, innovations in materials and design are likely to continue, potentially leading to custom solutions that meet the unique needs of both male and female goalkeepers.
Bottom Line
The future of goalkeeper gloves hinges on addressing performance, fit for women, and sustainability, with continuous innovation essential for maintaining grip and comfort in a demanding sport.
