Limiting the carbon footprint is the new direction the world is heading, and Japan is leading the way in the liquid fuel world. Toyota continues to highlight the importance of hydrogen technology while showing the people its efficiency through its inventions. Liquid hydrogen, which brings in a greater energy density, in motorsports, is in discussion with the introduction of the GR Corolla H2 Concept in Toyota’s 2024 Super Taikyu Series. Racing can still be sustainable, and Toyota brings weight to the movement as it develops practical solutions for hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Toyota is advancing liquid fuel hydrogen technology in motorsports

Showing the practicality of liquid hydrogen technology in competition surroundings, Toyota sets the tone for the occasion with the GR Corolla H2 Concept entered in the Super Taikyu Series 2024. Liquid hydrogen, unlike gaseous hydrogen, makes space for an increase in fuel in the same tank capacity. While this may sound great, an issue that comes with this is the boil-off gas which happens when the liquid hydrogen vaporizes because of the heat exposure.

Not letting this concern set them back, Toyota is currently finding a solution to reuse the hydrogen instead of letting it evaporate into the atmosphere. Toyota says:

“Although it is still in the concept stage, if realized, this technology is expected to improve the energy efficiency of the entire liquid hydrogen system.”

Hydrogen-powered vehicles continue to bring much interest, and the exposure of this engine in motorsports may promote great usage in commercial applications.

Vaporized hydrogen: Reusing the boiled-off gas for great efficiency

The liquid hydrogen innovation functions well after Toyota’s self-pressurizer development. Bringing forth this ambitious innovation, Toyota aims to remove dependence of external energy to increase the pressure of boil-off gas. While the cycle of converting the vaporized hydrogen into fuel to power the vehicle may require electricity, the self-pressurizer rids the unnecessary steps and does it itself.

Showing the powers of their development, Toyota says:

“The self-pressurizer increases pressure by two to four times and produces reusable fuel without using any additional energy.”

This invention eliminates the vaporizing and waste of liquid hydrogen and contributes to the improvement in the efficiency of the vehicle.

Coupled with the self-pressurizer, a small fuel cell stack has been brought on to create electricity from the boil-off gas not used as fuel, to give power to vehicle components such as the liquid hydrogen pump. Everything has been thought off well and the success of the two developments can produce a well-rounded system making the hydrogen powered vehicles more self-sufficient.

A decrease in carbon footprint: Toyota’s vision

A new sustainable environment begins now with the small steps taken by every industry in the world. Contributing to this green initiative, Toyota’s hydrogen efforts are part of the Beyond Zero initiative, which is a strategy that looks to reduce the impact it has on the environment. Implementing two developments that seek to reuse energy, Toyota plans to invite more people to take a stand for hydrogen-powered vehicles.

This stands as a practical alternative and helps them make the boil-off gas tools commercialized. Voicing their support for the Beyond Zero initiative, Toyota said:

“Achieving zero, and adding new value beyond it.”

Continuing to explore sustainable efforts, Toyota has introduced its initiatives in the motorsports world, showing real-world testing.

Beyond Zero continues to grow in Japan’s sustainable transportation sector. Finding a further step in hydrogen cells, the introduction of liquid hydrogen technology finds a space in the future of zero-emission vehicles. The self-pressurizer and small fuel stack cell are developments created by Toyota to tackle the issues of boil-off gas and the reuse of the hindered emissions to become energy. Drawing up a template of what it means to be a future forward mobility thinker, Toyota takes a stand against carbon and harming the environment.

Sure, NASCAR is going from a 15-turn road course in Mexico to a familiar old track in the Pocono Mountains, but Pocono Raceway isn’t your typical stock-car oval track.

Pocono takes the “tri-oval” concept to an extreme.

Track construction began in the mid-1960s, six years after the opening of Daytona International Speedway brought a whole new tri-oval to racing. Pocono would become more triangle than tri-oval, however, with three distinctly different turns.

Pocono’s track was designed by Indy-racing legend Rodger Ward, who modeled each of three turns after turns on famous tracks in the Indy world: Trenton Speedway (Turn 1, 14 degrees of banking), Indianapolis (Turn 2, 8 degrees) and the Milwaukee Mile (Turn 3, 6 degrees).

Practically all forms of big-league auto racing have raced at Pocono, including, since 1971, NASCAR. The tradition continues this weekend, and here’s how to watch, including Prime Video’s fifth and final broadcast of its five-week run of Cup Series coverage.

Friday: Truckin’ in the Poconos

12:30 p.m.: Truck Series practice and qualifying (FS2).

5: Truck Series, MillerTech Battery 200 (FS1).

Saturday: Lots of NASCAR noise in the mountains

10 a.m.: Xfinity Series practice and qualifying (CW).

12:30 p.m.: Cup Series practice and qualifying (Prime).

3:30: Xfinity Series, Explore Pocono 250 (CW).

Sunday NASCAR: Prime time, one more time, at Pocono

2 p.m.: Cup Series, The Great American Getaway 400 (Prime).

Elsewhere this weekend for NASCAR: ARCA and the IMSA sports-cars

Saturday: ARCA at Elko (Minn.) Speedway, 9 p.m. (FS2).

Sunday: IMSA’s six-hour race at Watkins Glen, noon (NBC and Peacock).

KAUKAUNA (NBC 26) — NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin returned to Wisconsin International Raceway Thursday night, joining an illustrious group of racing legends at the track’s Circle of Fame.

NBC 26 was there to capture it all.

NASCAR legend Mark Martin returns to Wisconsin International Raceway, praises local racing sprit

For Martin, he says the visit was a homecoming to a place that helped launch his storied career.

“This is where I came to learn how to race. I raced with the nation’s greatest racers, and it prepared me to go NASCAR racing,” Martin said.

The celebration holds special significance for the local racing community in Northeast Wisconsin, where preserving short track racing has become increasingly important.

Marty Nussbaum, a member of the Fox River Racing Club who oversees the Circle of Fame, sees these events as crucial for the sport’s survival.

“When the week that you worked on the car and you bring it out here and you get a crowd of people in the stands, that shows the racer that you appreciate what they’ve done,” Nussbaum said passionately .

The Circle of Fame was created to honor the track’s legendary figures and has become a way to maintain interest in local racing.

“Jerry Schneider approved me with the idea of the circle of fame for the racers that have done things out here for WIR and the Fox River Racing Club,” Nussbaum said. “Unfortunately, Jerry got sick and passed away and he left the Circle of Fame to me.”

Since taking over the responsibility, Nussbaum has focused on using these recognition events to build community support.

“Maybe [we] get the fire going with them so they come back week in and week out,” Nussbaum said.

The celebration comes at a critical time for short track racing. Local race tracks around Wisconsin and across the country are being sold or shut down. Most recently for Wisconsin, State Park Speedway in Wausau.

Despite these industry challenges, Wisconsin International Raceway continues to thrive, welcoming both fans and racing legends home.

Track owners say more legends like Martin will be visiting the track in the future, hoping to inspire attendance from both racing enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Pocono Raceway will always hold special meaning for Ryan Blaney.

It was the site of Blaney’s first NASCAR Cup Series victory in 2017. And then he won again there last year.

“I love the area, I love the race track. That place means a lot to me,” Blaney said in a telephone interview. “Places where you have your first win, success, stuff like that, they always mean a little more. So I look forward to getting back there.”

That happens this weekend when the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Pocono for The Great American Getaway 400 presented by VISITPA.COM. It is part of a tripleheader at the 2.5-mile triangular track in Long Pond that includes the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Miller Tech Battery 200 on Friday and the NASCAR Xfinity Series Explore the Pocono Mountains 250 on Saturday.

Last year, Blaney started eighth in the No. 12 Team Penske Ford, used pit strategy to gain track position and led the final 44 laps to take the checkered flag.

“We had great speed all weekend and our strategy was incredibly good to where we could just focus on how do we get to the front, how do we stay there,” Blaney said. “We did a great job of that. That part is always super important. We just hit it right and hopefully we can hit it right again.”

Besides the two wins, Blaney also has one pole, a fifth-place finish, two sixths and two 10ths in 15 Pocono starts. He ran two Truck Series races there as well with a win in 2013 and a fifth-place in 2014.

With its three different corners, Pocono presents a unique challenge to drivers. Blaney said you are not going to be fantastic in all three, so it’s a choice of where you want to be your best.

He puts his focus on Turns 1 and 3.

“I want to be really good (there) and then I’ll just kind of deal with the tunnel (turn),” Blaney said. “Everyone’s a little different, but those two corners are most important because they lead to some really good passing zones.

“It’s hard to be good in (Turns) 1 and 3 . (Turn) 1 is pretty banked and a little sharper than Turn 3. Turn 3 is long, flat, got a gradual corner. Turn 3 has always been No. 1 important to me, then Turn 1 is second-most important and then the tunnel (turn) third. With that long front straightaway, you need to be good off that corner because it can really bite you if you struggle over there to be able to pass or maintain a position if you’re battling somebody.”

Restarts at Pocono also are key. The front straightaway is the longest in NASCAR at 3,740 feet and is 60 to 100 feet wide. On restarts, drivers will fan out four-, five-, even six-wide, then have to quickly funnel in line heading into turn 1.

“When you have a lot of room, guys just try to find the best way to try to navigate through there and get the clean air or the best position possible,” Blaney said. “The restarts are always important. You’d better make sure you’re on the offensive. If you’re on the defensive, you’re kind of going backwards. So it’s a lot of timing your runs on the restarts. And then, do you try to push somebody? Do you try to get somebody behind you to push you? It just kind of all depends. But they get pretty wild and you hope you’re going forward and not get swallowed up.”

This season has been up and down for Blaney. He ranks fourth in laps led with 346, but has endured crashes and engine failures that led to five finishes of 32nd or worse. He does have a victory — three weeks ago at Nashville — along with six top-five and seven top-10 finishes in 16 races.

“Some of the finishes that we’ve not been able to get definitely stink,” Blaney said. “But that’s just kind of the way it goes. You focus on the positives and the positives are we’ve been really fast. That’s the toughest thing to find – the speed in the car. Hopefully it smooths out for us. It was nice to get that win at Nashville. It’s been a rocky year, but I feel really good about it because our speed is there. Hopefully we can keep that through the year and when the playoffs start.”

Practice and qualifying for The Great American Getaway 400 is Saturday. The 160-lap race gets the green flag Sunday at 2 p.m. It will be televised on Amazon Prime.

NASCAR AT POCONO SCHEDULE

Friday: Craftsman Truck Series practice, 12:35-1:30 p.m.; qualifying, 1:40-2:30 p.m.; Miller Tech Battery 200, 5 p.m.
